To feel relieved that it’s not a no-deal outcome!

Whether you’re Remain or Leave the fact is that Brexit is going ahead. I was genuinely scared of a no-deal outcome especially after the weird 2020 we have had.

I don’t know the full details of the deal but I’m just glad that there is a deal rather than no-deal at all. Anyone else feel the same?

Brexit: Boris Johnson hails free trade deal with EU

At least that’s something. I was worried about trading under WTO rules.

Thoughts?

Great relief, the industry I work in will benefit a lot from this

hansgrueber · 24/12/2020 20:41

A No-deal outcome would have been as bad for Europe as for the UK which is why pressure was put on Macron especially to be a bit more flexible.

ivykaty44 · 24/12/2020 20:41

After watching the French close the boarders, you begin to wonder if it was to show Johnson what a no deal would actually become

PicsInRed · 24/12/2020 20:44

It's a good outcome and a relief.

However, some inside the UK will seethe with rage that we won't receive the "punishment" which should have been ours - the purification by pain. Hmm

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 24/12/2020 20:47

Better a deal than no deal. But it won’t be anywhere near as good as being an EU member (obviously). And I’m still sad and angry about Brexit. I certainly won’t be forgiving or forgetting.

Then the Netherlands and Spain moved to continue trading with us by air and sea, whilst raging that the French were killing their bottom line, Calais was clogged, European drivers raged as they were trapped in Dover ... and the fishing issue was miraculously solved in double time.

No it wouldn’t. No deal would have been bad for Europe, but nowhere near as bad for the EU as it would be for UK.

We need to know the full details of the agreement to know long-term just how damaging this act of self-harm has been for this country. We all know that it’s going to be considerably worse than what we enjoyed as full members of the EU. But I agree that on face value, it looks less worse than a no deal crash out.

NiceGerbil · 24/12/2020 20:48

I'm really relieved.

Be interested to see what the details are as they come out.

Titsywoo · 24/12/2020 20:50

I'm relieved for many reasons but my business would have lost 25% of it's sales so it is good for me!

AllWashedOut · 24/12/2020 20:57

Your relief was manufactured by the powers that be. The whole last-minute saving-things-from-the-tiger's-jaws was all theatre. It was necessary to push the electorate (not just of the UK) into thinking this was a hard won, final deal of all deals.

Tonight I'm in a stink. Boris gets to stand on his platform and gloat about the newly independent country we now live in thanks to him. And people will believe his lies.

chomalungma · 24/12/2020 20:57

So we have to have maintain a level playing field with the EU in terms of lots of our regulations and we have to ensure that goods sold to the EU meet their standards.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/dec/24/from-tariffs-to-visas-heres-whats-in-the-brexit-deal

Pleased it's not No Deal - we do have control over lots more things but we've paid a price for it - and will still have to follow a lot of the EU rules, without having a say on them.

I can see a lot of people getting caught out though when they travel to the EU in future with passport issues, healthcare issues.

BubblyBarbara · 24/12/2020 20:58

It basically is a no deal if you’re in services since they’re not covered at all in the deal. It covers goods but gives us no more than we already had. So the deal is worse than what we had in 2020 but not as bad as a total no deal. Great. Let’s celebrate.

NiceGerbil · 24/12/2020 21:13

I agree it's better than no deal.

Boris and co have fucked it though sounds like they gave an awful lot of concessions.

His saying it's a great triump for UK is silly.

Did you see the bit where he said we'll get back control over etc very jot and tittle? I mean just. ???!!!???.

Alright I hadn’t considered I’d been duped!

Proof will be in the pudding.

A very sad day, as my beloved Britain will be poorer and weaker now. Of course glad to not have a no deal, but that would have been national suicide so not that likely.

Worrying about the security/crime implications, and services. But some bits are better than I feared.

I laughed at the idea the European question is 'settled' - they said that last time...

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 24/12/2020 21:29

Massive relief. No deal would have been bad for everyone

CoRhona · 24/12/2020 21:30

I voted YABU because we have absolutely no idea if the details of the agreement yet. We could have given up so, so much for a so called 'win'.

He cannot be trusted, he's a proven liar so why on earth anyone thinks he's achieved this is beyond me.

Completely agree with @AllWashedOut

Viviennemary · 24/12/2020 21:31

I'm sure the EU will have screwed us. I'd have preferred a no deal.

TheGreatWave · 24/12/2020 21:34

At least we have something, though there was a wry smile that this is pretty much the worst outcome for the "out means out" brigade.

TheGreatWave · 24/12/2020 21:35

I'm sure the EU will have screwed us.

You reap what you sow.

NiceGerbil · 24/12/2020 21:37

Well yes Boris crowing about what a triumph is bollocks. In the end we conceded a lot. More than we probably need to if we'd engaged in good faith from the start.

It's still better than no deal which was a real worry.

I feel a little bit like something has been lifted off my shoulders. Corona plus no deal was a really scary prospect.

Does anyone know what's happening with

Passporting for financial services
Freedom of movement

JacobReesMogadishu · 24/12/2020 21:39

Yes I’m glad it’s not no deal. But aren’t we on worse terms, etc than if there had been no Brexit? So a bit hard to celebrate. But appreciate with the vote the way it was maybe this was as good as it could be. Anyway £35 million a week for the nhs or something now? 🙄

Ihatefish · 24/12/2020 21:41

It was never in a million years going to be no deal. It was posturing on both sides. Europe would have been as fucked as anyone without one. Even the French fundamental dislike of anything British couldn’t stop it in the end.

Whatever it says,if it doesn’t work it can be renegotiated in the future.

ListeningQuietly · 24/12/2020 21:43

THis deal is marginally better than no deal

but it is MUCH MUCH worse than what we had before 23 June 2016

Hoppinggreen · 24/12/2020 21:44

That’s the point
We are supposed to be so relieved there IS a deal that we forget it’s a shit one
