To feel relieved that it’s not a no-deal outcome!

Whether you’re Remain or Leave the fact is that Brexit is going ahead. I was genuinely scared of a no-deal outcome especially after the weird 2020 we have had.

I don’t know the full details of the deal but I’m just glad that there is a deal rather than no-deal at all. Anyone else feel the same?

Brexit: Boris Johnson hails free trade deal with EU

At least that’s something. I was worried about trading under WTO rules.

Thoughts?

@Defenbaker

It’s not a soft brexit!
No customs Union. No single market.
Deal covers goods only which is 20% of our trade. Other 80% is services for which there is almost no provision.

@HainaultViaNewburyPark

Better a deal than no deal. But it won’t be anywhere near as good as being an EU member (obviously). And I’m still sad and angry about Brexit. I certainly won’t be forgiving or forgetting.
This. Huge relief as I genuinely think Johnson was capable of driving us off the no-deal cliff. But it’s still a massive act of national self harm.
chomalungma · 24/12/2020 23:20

It will be interesting to see the trade deals that the UK does in the future with other countries and how they compare to the ones the EU does with the same countries.

Buddytheelf85 · 24/12/2020 23:30

Yes, I’m very relieved it’s not a no deal, although I 100% agree with previous posters that the urgency was all staged so we’d all fall for the hero Boris act. Never underestimate what a snake he is. That said, I didn’t have faith that he wasn’t mad enough to take us over the edge with no deal.

I think that both now and in the future we shouldn’t draw comparisons between this deal and no deal at all - that’s what this government want us to do, but it’s meaningless. Of course this deal is better than no deal - pretty much anything would be. We should draw comparisons between this deal and staying in the EU.

whiterabbitsweets · 24/12/2020 23:36

Naturally we'll have to see how this unfolds but at the moment it looks like the deal that will keep most of the reasonable and pragmatic leavers/remainers happy.

Those at the extreme ends will not be happy but who cares. I voted remain but we need to make the most of it and get on as best we can.

In theory we lose the EU middle man/woman. So, Britain might be able to weather that too?

I have no idea. Just speculation.

After watching the French close the boarders, you begin to wonder if it was to show Johnson what a no deal would actually become
You’re far from the only person to have wondered that.
friendlycat · 24/12/2020 23:41

It’s a mess but it could have been so much worse. Of course it’s better than no deal but it’s certainly not a “soft” Brexit. There’s going to be a lot of red tape for businesses and still much to be clarified. Boris is going to bounce it being fabulous and I suppose it is in the face of no deal.

It’s not frictionless trade, it’s not what the leave camp were promised, it’s not what Gove thought it would be etc etc. No doubt the purist ERG will still bitch away in the background. It’s cost a lot of time and money for what?

But it’s better than the worse outcome of the ridiculous statement of an Australian type deal when that is actually no deal and WTO terms with a few deals on the side for wine etc that Aus has with the EU.

Nat6999 · 24/12/2020 23:53

We can't say if it is a good deal or not until we see full details of what the deal is, the only thing I have seen is that we have obligations between UK & EU for 5 years.

Defenbaker · 25/12/2020 00:07

@Frazzled2207 Well, I guess they will negotiate on the services aspect as time goes on.

I haven't seen or read the deal document (which apparently is over 2,000 pages long), but surely leaving with a trade deal in place is a softer Brexit than a no deal Brexit would have been? I'm sure this deal will be picked to pieces by people on both sides, as hard core leavers will say they would prefer a no deal Brexit, while staunch remainers will say that no deal is as good as full membership of the EU, but I'm hopeful that it's a reasonable compromise.

TheGreatWave · 25/12/2020 00:10

Last night (because it is now early Christmas day morning) I kept seeing an advert about businesses getting their affairs in order. Someone's finger has been hovering above the "go button" for that for a while.

ChristingleAlltheWay · 25/12/2020 00:27

@HainaultViaNewburyPark - can I just say, as a former Woodford Ian, I LOVE your username! 🤣

DSCAMEHOMEDRUNK · 25/12/2020 00:27

@PicsInRed

It's a good outcome and a relief.

However, some inside the UK will seethe with rage that we won't receive the "punishment" which should have been ours - the purification by pain. Hmm

Well aren’t you just lovely

The U.K. closed the borders to Danish citizens including lorries in November for 2 weeks due to the mink issue.

Macron only trying to be careful and I think sod all to do with Brexit.

PigletJohn · 25/12/2020 02:02

In his announcement, Johnson said there will be no non-tariff barriers on trade.

This is not true.

Guylan · 25/12/2020 02:22

this soft Brexit seems like a good compromise for leavers and remainers.

For me a soft Brexit would be remaining part of the single market and customs Union. It’s better than a No Deal (Johnson probably never intended that, all theatre) but it’s still much worse than what we had.

I will never understand how giving up some of our country’s prosperity and many other benefits for some nostalgia-tinged sovereignty idea is worth it. The sad thing is we never lost our sovereignty, we merely pooled some of it in areas that facilitated frictionless trade.

Walkintal · 25/12/2020 02:39

No tariffs and able to leave the racist EU and not have to prioritise trade and immigration with a white neighbour. Able to genuinely trade and build relationships with the world.

Topseyt · 25/12/2020 02:41

I am relieved that it isn't no-deal, but still think that we have self-sabotaged by walking away from the best deal we ever had, which was our membership of the EU.

Many details of this deal are yet to emerge, and there is one real gaping hole in it straight away - no deal or passporting if any type for the Financial Services sector. Presumably that is to be negotiated at a later date? They haven't just rushed this through and all but forgotten about it?

I can't help thinking that the very visible problems of the lorries queued up in and around Dover provided the kick up the arse that BoJo needed, as did the election of Jo Biden in the US. The timing is very curious otherwise.

I'll be hoping that we have the good sense to rejoin the EU in the next few years.

ilovesooty · 25/12/2020 02:42

@DemolitionBarbie

No deal was ruled out as soon as Biden won in the US.

We've spent a shit ton of money to make trading harder with our biggest trading partner. It's mortifyingly stupid.

I think we need to go through the humiliation of Brexit to get over WWII and the end of empire. I hope we'll rejoin once the boomers die off, to be frank.

I'm in the age group you mention. I voted Remain and fervently hope we'll rejoin in my lifetime.
NiceGerbil · 25/12/2020 02:48

Bit off with the death thing.

Most people i know who voted to leave are young (ish).

hamstersarse · 25/12/2020 02:53

I’m pleased with the certainty we have finally achieved.

The process itself has caused huge disruption for business, now we will know where we stand with everything and can get on executing plans. Once the —fucking— virus does one.

lovelemoncurd · 25/12/2020 03:32

We are now worse off than if we had stayed in the EU. Great let's fucking celebrate 🎂🍻🥳

PigletJohn · 25/12/2020 04:12

@Walkintal

Can you name a country that we were unable to trade with as members of the EU?
EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/12/2020 04:50

@Hoppinggreen

That’s the point We are supposed to be so relieved there IS a deal that we forget it’s a shit one
Absolutely this.

We've been manipulated and brain washed. We are basically far worse off and its bring spun as a victory. Angry doesn't even begin to cover how I'm feeling

lljkk · 25/12/2020 05:11

The next phase of the saga is ERG & fisher-people tantrumming that they don't like the deal. My pet Brexiter is waiting for "Nige" to proclaim what he thinks of it.
