To feel relieved that it’s not a no-deal outcome!

Whether you’re Remain or Leave the fact is that Brexit is going ahead. I was genuinely scared of a no-deal outcome especially after the weird 2020 we have had.

I don’t know the full details of the deal but I’m just glad that there is a deal rather than no-deal at all. Anyone else feel the same?

Brexit: Boris Johnson hails free trade deal with EU

At least that’s something. I was worried about trading under WTO rules.

Thoughts?

@PicsInRed

It's a good outcome and a relief.

However, some inside the UK will seethe with rage that we won't receive the "punishment" which should have been ours - the purification by pain. Hmm

Rubbish. Brexiteers are obsessed with the idea that remainders just want us to suffer - they like to paint themselves as victims. Prediction is not preference. We'll see what happens, shall we?

@HagenDaz

I hope Boris kept the receipt because I don’t like his sodding Christmas Present to the Nation and I want a sodding refund.

Can we join the EU now please?

THIS with big bells on
MrsMiaWallis · 25/12/2020 20:02
@MrsMiaWallis it can bug you all you like. It doesn't detract from the fact that the UK used to have a say on the regulations that affected the majority of its exports and now does not.
I export to 42 countries and this will barely affect me. A No Deal would have been extremely difficult. I'm delighted.

Good.

I wonder how many EU directives we will be implementing from now on because it's something that we need to do.

I imagine that will become clear throughout next year.

TheGreatWave · 25/12/2020 20:33

I have just read a tweet on Twitter, that basically said "It's so lopsided in favour of the EU."

Did people really think that we would have all the 'good' bits, just none of the 'bad' (paying in, immigration etc)?

Of course any deal would favour the EU, seriously these people voted. Angry

MrsMiaWallis · 25/12/2020 20:38

Do you know, its not a bad deal at all for the UK and might not be the complete shitshow many were expecting.

chomalungma · 25/12/2020 20:38

And as long as the EU exists and we continue to do a lot of trade with them.

Yes. I'm happy to work to whichever guidelines the country I export to requires. As always.
TerryHearn · 25/12/2020 21:42

A lot of delusion on this thread. Amazed how people feel the EU is a faultless and glistening entity. The reality is the opposite. We also spent decades trying to negotiate our own position but practically were ignored. The Germans and French dominate matters politically and economically. There is no getting away from that. If the EU had wanted us to stay then there were multiple opportunities to concede to us to keep us in line. They failed. Economically the EU is a mess and that will only get worse. Stating that we are leaving “the best deal we ever had” is false advertising. It was the “only deal we ever had”. Time will tell whether Brexit works or not but at least it needs to be given a chance.

chomalungma · 25/12/2020 22:01

I'll be interested to see what (if any) effort is made to bring those people who very anti Brexit onside.

No doubt we will be told to move on and get over it.

user1471565182 · 25/12/2020 22:05

The french dont dislike anything british, they largely (along with the rest of europe) dont give a shiny shit and this is what brexiters have misunderstood (like everything and anything else) from the start

Copperzippedup · 25/12/2020 22:32

Feel like I lost my wallet and found £5 - It’s better than nothing - but not compared to what we once had.
Hoping this means a cabinet reshuffle and we get some new ministers, who are chosen for their talent rather than their hardline support of Brexit. It’s time we had some competent leadership!

MrsMiaWallis · 25/12/2020 22:35

This is true. I think the EU missed a trick by not giving us concessions at the beginning of this sorry mess. If they had we might still be in the EU

I wonder what they truly think...

Are they pleased we are out?
Will more countries join?

Other countries seem to be making economic pacts at the moment.

PigletJohn · 25/12/2020 22:48

@ Walkintal

Can you name a country that we were unable to trade with as members of the EU?

that's a "no" then.

chomalungma · 25/12/2020 22:53

It's being spun that our economy will grow more as a result of this deal compared to No Deal.

No fucking shit.

Walkintal · 26/12/2020 00:35

PigletJohn I responded up thread, I never said there were any countries we could not trade with. I said Able to genuinely trade and build relationships with the world

PigletJohn · 26/12/2020 03:20

So can you name a country we were unable "to genuinely trade" with when we were members of the EU?

On some other occasion, you can tell us what you think non-genuine trade is.

I think economically there would have been some benefit to the whole EU in us staying, but I think there are advantages to them in us going as well.

Our leaving has strengthened France and Germany within the EU, and therefore globally.

UK was often an outlier in EU negotiations, and they can now go ahead with things more easily, which will strengthen them.

What happens over the coming years with services is s big risk for us and an opportunity for the EU, some companies will presumably relocate away from us. UK used to be the ideal gateway to Europe, but those days are over now.

We now have to battle internally about the nature/direction of the UK going forward, which will use a lot of our energy. It's going to be a very draining few years I think.

HappyWinter · 26/12/2020 07:21

The whole thing was so random in the first place.

Very little lead in. Highly spun info/ lies. Seems like the Russians were up to no good with it. Financial dodginess.

@NiceGerbil

They even wrote a book about it called The Foundations of Geopolitics with their wish list for more power, including the UK leaving the EU.

"The Foundations of Geopolitics: The Geopolitical Future of Russia is a geopolitical book by Aleksandr Dugin. It has had a some influence within the Russian military, police, and foreign policy elites and has been used as a textbook in the Academy of the General Staff of the Russian military. Its publication in 1997 was well received in Russia. Powerful Russian political figures subsequently took an interest in Dugin, a Russian eurasianist, fascist and nationalist who has developed a close relationship with Russia's Academy of the General Staff."

"The United Kingdom, merely described as an "extraterritorial floating base of the U.S.", should be cut off from Europe"

Devilishpyjamas · 26/12/2020 07:31

I see Bully Patel is saying that despite losing access to shared crime info & security databases we are now safer.

It’s going to be months & months of this sort of nonsense isn’t it? I suppose Brexit has taught them saying any nonsense works.

Devilishpyjamas · 26/12/2020 07:34

Oh and for anyone needing some light relief check out Josh Berry’s Rafe character on Twitter. He has great nicknames for them all & nails all the nonsense.

That won't necessarily please other EU countries!
