What would you do if your Mil said this to you?

If you posted a picture of you and your family eating a roast dinner (me, husband and 2 daughters) and your MIL commented “What has happened to your diet?!?!?” Ok, fair enough I am In the overweight category (was obese and have now lost 5 and a half stone over the past year!) what would you say in reply? Husband laughed and said she was “only joking and not to take it personally” but I think it’s rude! To be fair she’s always commenting on everybody and what they do etc. Surely this is bad manners?!?!?

I'd reply "if you think a roast dinner is unhealthy then there's something wrong!"

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 24/12/2020 11:44

Was this in public like Facebook?

It seems a bit rude but some people are really jokey and would hate to genuinely cause offence. If she had form for making needling PA comments then you can assume she meant to rile you.

If it was me I'd ignore it but seethe inside for weeks. Blush

CallmeIT · 24/12/2020 11:44

“What has happened to your manners?!?!?!”

NewlyGranny · 24/12/2020 11:44

I would just respond, "Didn't realise you'd joined the Food Police!" and put a laughing emoji so you can pull the "Where's your sense of humour?!" defence if she gets gnarly.

Ohalrightthen · 24/12/2020 11:44

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

I'd reply "if you think a roast dinner is unhealthy then there's something wrong!"
I mean, it's not a BigMac, but if you're doing it properly its a lot more calories than you need.

A low-fat roast i think would be more depressing than no roast.

OP, she's a dick. I'd say "my diet took a break for Christmas" and move on.

WisestIsShe · 24/12/2020 11:44

Well I'd want to tell her to fuck off and not be rude but I'd take the high road and say nothing.

TulipsTwoLips · 24/12/2020 11:44

Just delete her comment.

joopy79 · 24/12/2020 11:44

I'd reply what happened to your manners?

Sparklfairy · 24/12/2020 11:45

THIS
CallmeIT · 24/12/2020 11:45

Or, “it’s gone the same way as your manners - both fixable Smile

littlebirdworrying · 24/12/2020 11:45

Definitely bad manners!! Roast dinners aren't unhealthy either, unless it's all roast potatoes with lashings of gravy and nothing else, which I could easily eat on their own.....yummy! Merry Christmas o

Oreservoir · 24/12/2020 11:45

Message back
What happened to your manners?

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 24/12/2020 11:46

"Looked at you and decided I had nothing to worry about after all"

Not really, but I would be very tempted.

Fuckingcrustybread · 24/12/2020 11:46

I'd reply, the diet has fucked off, just like your manners.

MagnoliaBeige · 24/12/2020 11:46

“What has happened to your manners?!?!?!”
I’d go with this or just delete her comment. Well done on your weight loss, that’s an amazing achievement!
Reclinehard · 24/12/2020 11:46

"it's off for Christmas, apparently so are your manners!"

PeskyRooks · 24/12/2020 11:46

Flipping hell well done for losing 5 and a half stone that's incredible! Who cares what people say. Probably she was trying to be funny in a snidey way, whatever, just ignore.

TheRuleofStix · 24/12/2020 11:47

I'd think you have my MIL! She constantly used to comment about my weight/diet/size and missed no opportunity to make a dig. It's destroyed our relationship over the years. She doesn't do it anymore as my dh eventually told her to STFU - then she started on my kids and I told her to STFU.

My children have been raised to never comment on people's size, diet, food intake. It's so fucking rude.

PandemicPavolova · 24/12/2020 11:48

I guess the diet has gone the same way as your manners -

Far away....

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 24/12/2020 11:48

Posting a picture of eating is strange in the first instance but her comment depends on many things. Portion size, calorie content of meal, if you have been making a big deal out of dieting or moaning etc. Easily taken out of contact online.

PussyCatInChristmasStockings · 24/12/2020 11:48

@CallmeIT

“What has happened to your manners?!?!?!”
^This.
Topseyt · 24/12/2020 11:49

Tell her that your diet is YOUR business and nobody else's.

I'd consider it rude and thoughtless.

Showmethefood · 24/12/2020 11:49

It happened two nights ago and did upset me quite a bit 😔

OP posts:
madcatladyforever · 24/12/2020 11:49

I agree with delete the comment. It shows you are pissed off delete every rude comment until she gets the message.

Vitaminsss · 24/12/2020 11:50

I would say “the same place you left your manners” with an emoji to add plausible banter
