If you posted a picture of you and your family eating a roast dinner (me, husband and 2 daughters) and your MIL commented “What has happened to your diet?!?!?” Ok, fair enough I am In the overweight category (was obese and have now lost 5 and a half stone over the past year!) what would you say in reply? Husband laughed and said she was “only joking and not to take it personally” but I think it’s rude! To be fair she’s always commenting on everybody and what they do etc. Surely this is bad manners?!?!?

OP posts:
5zeds · 24/12/2020 13:31

Just reply “what a horrible thing to say”

Diddlysquatty · 24/12/2020 13:32

If it was a public post I’d feel really embarrassed and would just delete it.
I’m really funny about anyone commenting on my weight or diet, either negatively or positively and always keep it to myself if I am actively trying to lose weight

It’s such a headfuck when you lose loads and everyone comments on it and then you put it back on

IEat · 24/12/2020 13:36

I'd tell her I was starving as her son had just shagged the living daylights out my bum. Only if be much more crude.

GrapeLipBalm · 24/12/2020 13:39

Miaow!

ChippyTea16 · 24/12/2020 13:43

Can you get your dd to reply ‘she’s lost 5 and a half stone this year, give her a break!’ might make her think twice if she thinks her DGD is criticising her? What a cow. And well done on your weight loss!!

Elderflower14 · 24/12/2020 13:43

Standard Mumsnet reply... "Did you mean to be so rude!"

LH1987 · 24/12/2020 13:45

She embarrassed herself, not you!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 24/12/2020 13:47

I’d have left the comment there and ignored it knowing that others will see it judge HER. Well done on the weight loss

gamerchick · 24/12/2020 13:47

Yabu for posting photos of your dinner.

But your mil is a bit of a knob.

foreverandalways · 24/12/2020 13:49

You should have said....it's gone to pot just like the rest of the year.....I will enjoy my meal without your company....merry Xmas xx

collywobbly · 24/12/2020 13:53

@CallmeIT

“What has happened to your manners?!?!?!”

beavisandbutthead · 24/12/2020 13:55

delete the comment.....she will get the message

As for your DH I am not sure how he can suggest its a joke and not to take it personally as it was targeted at you. Your sensitive around your weight having lost a lot with more to lose and he is being a arse and should have called his mother up and told her off for adding comments like that as its rude.

Diva66 · 24/12/2020 13:59

I’d reply ‘very f**king funny ma’.

portico · 24/12/2020 14:01

OP, I am overweight and like you trying to lose weight, but I am no where as successful as you. Now back to your question. I would tell her to FO. You will sooner or later; and watch how she reacts to a dose of her own medicine.

Ohtherewearethen · 24/12/2020 14:09

I think a simple 'wow' would get your point across and highlight what a bitchy, sneery thing it was to say.

jessstan1 · 24/12/2020 14:10

Oh ffs you have probably told her you were dieting so that was her immediate response. Why post photos of you all eating anyway? It's an incredibly tedious and immature thing to do and you have to take the comments on the chin. I hope your children gave informed consent for the pics.

Ohtherewearethen · 24/12/2020 14:15

@jessstan1 - maybe her daughter should have got her mother's permission as it was the daughter who posted it?
Try reading the thread before commenting with nonsense.

Kitten11x · 24/12/2020 14:16

Just delete her comment and ignore it op some people have no tact.

Kitten11x · 24/12/2020 14:17

Also can you set her comments so they are not published? Like minimise her on your social media ( and life preferably).

hula008 · 24/12/2020 14:19

I mean, it's not a BigMac, but if you're doing it properly its a lot more calories than you need.

She's lost five and a half stone already I dont think she needs diet tips..

EveningOverRooftops · 24/12/2020 15:11

I’d be a sarcastic rude mare and reply something along the lines of

‘I was in need of a good stuffing, DH obliged’ Xmas Grin

Kill it with humour.

C8H10N4O2 · 24/12/2020 15:12

Ask DD to delete the comment.

I'd be more annoyed with DH tbh, I wasn't married to my MiL

Beachcomber74 · 24/12/2020 15:17

You’ve lost 5.5 stone, you’re amazing. Just rise above the nasty comment.

KatherineJaneway · 24/12/2020 15:30

@misselphaba

"I've lost 5 and a half stone on this diet, thanks for asking. Merry Christmas to you too."
This ^^
