To hope those selfish people on holiday hurry back!

We are in a global pandemic, cases rising exponentially. Didn’t take a rocket scientist to anticipate that major restrictions were going to be put in place. It is not the time to take an entirely selfish holiday.

I’ve been flabbergasted at the number of people I’ve seen on social media jetting off to get some sun. We’d all love a holiday but I can’t believe people thought this really was ok!

And now flights are being suspended and people are potentially getting stuck.

AIBU to have limited sympathy?

They’re probably visiting places in a less bad state than here so if there’s a selfish element it’s more likely to be inflicting our own state of affairs o other places

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 20/12/2020 18:15

Are they getting stuck? Some lovely friends of mine went yesterday, will they struggle to get the return flight in two weeks?

Thisismylife1 · 20/12/2020 18:19

@ClarenceBoddicker yes agree 100%, selfish by leaving and taking the new strain with them. I personally think the extra capacity for all these private tests should be directed to the NHS test and trace - ie no private testing at all. I have symptoms and offered a test site 70 miles away (and I live in London!)

@ThroughThickAndThin01 yes I think they’ve been foolish. I’d be heading back if they can!

Many will have had to have had a PCR so wont be spreading it anywhere. If they are travelling within the rules in place - good for them.

nosswith · 20/12/2020 18:27

It may be too late for them to hurry back. If they are with relatives, I hope they can stay with them for longer.

My lack of sympathy will be with anyone choosing the self-flagellation that is Ryanair. Nothing to do with Covid 19 though, it would be the same regardless. I don't support the annual animal cruelty that is the Grand National, but Michael O'Leary does.

RelightMyPfizer · 20/12/2020 18:55

Our best friends are away- they had covid and 1 was hospitalised

They tested before they went (they have both also had anti body testing)

I don't think it is selfish of them.

Individual risk assessments!

You don't sound as if you have any sympathy at all OP but are really hoping they all get stranded. That is just jealousy.
One of the many nasty consequences of this pandemic is people like you taking the moral high ground and thinking they have the right to tell everyone else what to do. You don't, you can only control your own behaviour.

Gingernaut · 20/12/2020 19:12

I wonder when Julia H-B's coming back.

Sending my partner back to his lovely home country for xmas. I'm delighted he's getting to see them after a year. If the flights are going ahead..you cant blame people for getting on them
.

GlowingOrb · 20/12/2020 19:19

I absolutely do blame people who choose to travel. Just because something is legal does not mean it is right. If everyone focused on trying to do the best they can to stop the spread instead of pushing limits, we wouldn’t be in this mess to the same degree.

Notimeforaname · 20/12/2020 19:22

Well in this case...it is right for some people. Some people need to travel and its definitely not illegal to fly so off they go. Delighted for anybody getting a break.

emilyfrost · 20/12/2020 19:26

They chose to go abroad, they now have to face the consequences of that decision even if it means getting stuck - and they shouldn’t be expecting help either.

I do agree with this though. Happy to see anyone get away or get where they need to but yes that's the risk and should always be in their minds to have a plan B

SuperCaliFragalistic · 20/12/2020 19:39

Lots of nasty bitter jealous people around today. Season of goodwill anyone?

If the flights are going people would potentially lose a lot of money if they just didn't go on a prearranged trip.

Tootletum · 20/12/2020 19:41

Make sure you don't get vertigo on that pedestal.

SandyY2K · 20/12/2020 19:43

Its up to them to deal with getting stranded if it comes to that. I really can't get het up about things like this and there's a tone in your post that comes across as envious.

Individuals will make their own choices and I don't call it selfish to go on holiday. Covid negative tests are required when visiting most places abroad now...and quarantine is required on their return.

InTheLongGrass · 20/12/2020 19:46

Depends where they are, @ThroughThickAndThin01 but yes, many places are cancelling UK flights. Several Middle East countries are rumoured to be doing similar to the ones in the article.

Zoecarter · 20/12/2020 19:47

You sound a bit jelouse

oblada · 20/12/2020 19:48

Well I don't care what you or anyone else thinks tbh and I doubt your 'friends' care either.
I'm hoping my family can travel to see us. That means international travel. If the flights go ahead they will be on them. It's a shitty situation all round but I'm not about to make a martyr out of myself. I've dealt with enough shit this year.
I haven't see my 1yr old nephew yet because of this so if he can come with my brother and his wife then happy days. I'm happy to follow the rules but certainly not planning to impose extra rules on myself/my family just for the fun of it/to get on some idiotic high moral ground.

I have to say that's what bothers me the most. I was flabbergasted by the numbers in the summer saying "it's ok, they have far fewer cases than the UK". Point completely lost on them.

@oiwotaluvlyday I agree. I think OP is jealous and should keep opinions to themselves
Dinosaur19 · 20/12/2020 19:55

Don’t be jealous OP. People are entitled to a holiday after this shitter of a year. I’d go given half a chance.

Bollss · 20/12/2020 19:56

I'm sick and fucking tired of hearing the word selfish. How is it selfish to do something you're allowed to do? It's not selfish. This thread says a lot more about op than the people who've gone on holiday.

Thisismylife1 · 20/12/2020 20:01

To those posters who are saying I’m jealous - could easily afford to be sunning myself in a 5 star hotel for the next fortnight. This isn’t about my ability to do that but the fact it’s not the right thing to do, let alone the legality. And to be clear I was referring to holidays, not those visiting family. I personally have chosen not to do so but appreciate others have a different view and our government’s inconsistent messaging over Xmas hasn’t helped on the family front.

Maybe I should change my AIBU to say if you decided to go on holiday in the midst of a global pandemic, at a point where cases in your country are rising exponentially, you deserve no assistance, consular or otherwise to get home. I had huge amounts of sympathy for those caught in spring when no one knew any better , but I am struggling to see how I can feel much sympathy for those away purely on holiday, right now. Or am I just jealous?

No, no one is entitled to a holiday in the middle of a pandemic!
