To hope those selfish people on holiday hurry back!

We are in a global pandemic, cases rising exponentially. Didn’t take a rocket scientist to anticipate that major restrictions were going to be put in place. It is not the time to take an entirely selfish holiday.

I’ve been flabbergasted at the number of people I’ve seen on social media jetting off to get some sun. We’d all love a holiday but I can’t believe people thought this really was ok!

And now flights are being suspended and people are potentially getting stuck.

AIBU to have limited sympathy?

It's beyond me how people would even consider going ATM, and the people who are actually going.... lost for words

Because I followed all the 'rules'.
I wore my mask
washed my hands,
kept the appropriate distance from people and left all my information to be traced where needed.
I went to a country that was on the green list at the time.
I didn't not need to quarantine when I arrived back home.
My flight took off with safety measures in place. The pilot was there.
My hotel booking was confirmed and allowed. Why wouldn't I go??? How was I being ignorant if I did everything I was instructed to?
The airport staff here told me to have a wonderful holiday....the locals at my destination welcomed me. I had a lovely time.

Notimeforaname · 20/12/2020 21:24

*Did not need to quarantine

BonnieDundee · 20/12/2020 21:25

If I'd booked a holiday before this blew up and my holiday wasnt cancelled I'd go.on it. Ate you seriously suggesting that people lose thousands of pounds by just not going?

I probably need to take.a break from this website. The judgemental moral superiority is getting a bit much

xmasfairybuns · 20/12/2020 21:27

@RelightMyPfizer

Our best friends are away- they had covid and 1 was hospitalised

They tested before they went (they have both also had anti body testing)

I don't think it is selfish of them.

Individual risk assessments!

Individual risk assessments don't assess the risk a person poses to others. Proper risk assessments go beyond just the risk to the person doing it, they include the risk to others.

I don't judge anyone who wants to go away, but having just moved abroad from the UK a few weeks ago I can tell you that other than temperature checks there was no requirement whatsoever from Heathrow, British Airways or the Mexico government to have a negative Covid test in order to fly and enter the country. So in reality it would be very easy for someone to travel from the UK to another country completely oblivious and possibly asymptomatic, spreading the virus everywhere. Myself included, I don't exempt myself from this, but as we had to move for my partners job we didn't have much choice in the timing of flying abroad. My worry is less for people travelling and potentially getting stuck, more for the people working in tourism in countries or areas that do not have the same high quality healthcare and are exposed to Covid because people want a holiday. Personally I'm not planning on flying back to the UK or going on holiday until it's safe to do so. Meaning it could be another year until we see our family and friends in the UK again - it sucks but it is the right thing to do.

Suzeyshoes · 20/12/2020 21:31

Totally understand the sentiment OP. It’s frustrating when you’re busting a gut, putting yourself at risk and you hear ppl warbling on about ‘needing a sunny holiday for their mental health’. Yes, everybody has different needs, but there’s a lot of entitled and spoilt behaviour going on.

If you’ve taken the risk to go away, fine. That’s your call. But it was a pretty silly thing to do seeing how utterly inevitable this lockdown was.

VenusTiger · 20/12/2020 21:36

Anyone seen the ONS data for monthly deaths over the last five years?....... didn't think so.

MillieEpple · 20/12/2020 21:37

I hope they all get home safe and sound. Lots of people are traveling to get home from work or to visit their own family even to provide care.

Justiceisblind · 20/12/2020 21:40

I’m worried about schrodingersbiscuit ‘s issues now....

ineedaholidaynow · 20/12/2020 21:41

Would people rather live in a country where you can go on holiday but have lockdown rules, or live somewhere like Australia where borders were shut but can pretty much have a normal life, until someone brings the virus in from somewhere else?

GabsAlot · 20/12/2020 21:50

eurostar closing from tonight for holidays

ineedaholidaynow · 20/12/2020 21:55

France are now refusing to accept freight from Dover

ilovesooty · 20/12/2020 21:56

Well since our spineless government refuses to halt international travel other countries are having to do our job for us.

SeasonFinale · 20/12/2020 21:58

@Puppamumma

I see Sir Captain Tom is in Barbados with his family. I hope they are all okay but still feel it's a risk it would be a horrible turn of events if he got covid after all he has done for the NHS
He is probably safer there than in tier 4 Bedfordshire where he lives

YABU to post this outside the Coronavirus topic. That's where the holier-than-thou-and-my-halo-is-absolutely-sparkling sermons go.

This.
rookiemere · 20/12/2020 22:02

We weren't told that the new variant was so serious until yesterday, so those already on holiday hardly went with a dastardly masterplan to infect other countries.

I will have an issue if the government ends up paying to repatriate people. I don't have a fundamental issue with people travelling but by this point it has to be caveat emptor for those who decide to go.

Temporary1234 · 20/12/2020 22:02

I haven’t seen my very sick dad for over 2 years and he hasn’t seen my daughter who was born a year ago.. we both think he might not make it another year...

However, I chose to not fly because of the risks to him and to myself.

I don’t compare myself to others though and don’t blame those who had the chance and did it.

I didn’t feel it was right in my case to travel as it just felt with the pandemic and little kids and ill dad I didn’t feel it was right

But I’m absolutely gutted and have been for a while

However.. a friend of mine is now spending Xmas with her family. She took the risk.. and I’m happy for her because I respect her choice and risk assessment.

She can live with her decision snd I can live with mine.

Just be rosponsible OP but don’t judge others for not making the same choice as you. That’s bitter.

If they were allowed to go then we have a duty to get them home.

Really?

That muddies the 'selfish' waters a bit, doesn't it?

HitthatroadJack · 20/12/2020 22:06

Oh go away with your bitterness, life is too short.

They are less selfish than people going to Boots to buy make-up during the lockdown, crowding Primark, having their hair done, any non-essential activity that makes the difference between surviving and having a life.

If they haven't broken any rule, good on them to enjoy a holiday and have left before the new restrictions kicked in, I hope for them it goes well.

Not many of us had guessed a new Tier 4 would be imposed a week before Christmas either. If it's good enough for the royals to ignore restrictions at any time, people who went away whilst it was allowed are not doing anything wrong.

I know a couple who were repatriated in March and they had to pay £2000.
