To hope those selfish people on holiday hurry back!

We are in a global pandemic, cases rising exponentially. Didn’t take a rocket scientist to anticipate that major restrictions were going to be put in place. It is not the time to take an entirely selfish holiday.

I’ve been flabbergasted at the number of people I’ve seen on social media jetting off to get some sun. We’d all love a holiday but I can’t believe people thought this really was ok!

And now flights are being suspended and people are potentially getting stuck.

AIBU to have limited sympathy?

I see Sir Captain Tom is in Barbados with his family. I hope they are all okay but still feel it's a risk it would be a horrible turn of events if he got covid after all he has done for the NHS

As long as Barbados has decent hospital facilities in case of emergency, (which is not hard compared to the UK), good for him. I should have booked a holiday there too.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 20/12/2020 22:08

@GlowingOrb

I absolutely do blame people who choose to travel. Just because something is legal does not mean it is right. If everyone focused on trying to do the best they can to stop the spread instead of pushing limits, we wouldn’t be in this mess to the same degree.
Exactly.

I’d have very little sympathy for people getting stuck or losing money when they booked a holiday during a pandemic.

SatishTheCat · 20/12/2020 22:08

Entitled and precious are you, what pathetic excuses. How depressing that no amount of education or information can overcome the innate selfishness of some people.

M4J4 · 20/12/2020 22:08

Why should there be no consular help available when the government hadn’t made it illegal to fly?

You sound bitter, OP. I’m guessing you missed out on a holiday and are now seething you weren’t quick off the mark. I haven’t been away but don’t begrudge others.

Jangle33 · 20/12/2020 22:08

This thread is clearly about people jetting off on very optional holidays. Not those that have/haven’t decided to visit family.

No one could know the variant was coming but everyone could read the graphs showing cases increasing massively and know the govt does everything last minute so it was very risky.

Seen lots of people doing last minute deals to the sun. Those who referred to hols in August, cases were much lower then so I don’t think can be compared to the winter flu season, straight after a national lockdown

SatishTheCat · 20/12/2020 22:09

Can easily afford to travel but I don’t in a pandemic because I am not an entitled twat.

HitthatroadJack · 20/12/2020 22:11

Confused

holidays are no more or less optional than visiting family. Sun is good for you, for your health and your mental health. Anyone who tried to enjoy a beach holiday or a skiing holiday somewhere when it was allowed should be praised for taking care of themselves.

When you see the state of people who do not take holiday, and become enraged martyr, it's clearly not working out.

Springersrock · 20/12/2020 22:12

I probably need to take.a break from this website. The judgemental moral superiority is getting a bit much

Quite!

I’d hidden the coronavirus board so I didn’t see this shit

Presumably they won't be hurrying back, they will be stuck.

Now we can look forward to the TV news being fully of 'sad face' holiday makers who decided going abroad for a holiday during a pandemic was totally OK and now expect someone to come and rescue them and bring them home.

nicky7654 · 20/12/2020 22:14

Happy Christmas to you too 🙄

newstrain · 20/12/2020 22:15

Btw not bothered about them going on holiday, just don't expect anyone to come and fetch you (unless it's covered by your insurance, which I think most insurers have excluded now).

M4J4 · 20/12/2020 22:15

Well if the FCO doesn’t advise against travel to a particular destination, then they can’t refuse to help you if it goes tits up. Blame the government for allowing travel, not individuals.

newstrain · 20/12/2020 22:18

I think most insurance companies have now inserted exclusions so that problems related to pandemics are not covered, so travellers not covered for pandemic-related problems were travelling at their own risk.

oblada · 20/12/2020 22:23

@M4J4

Can easily afford to travel but I don’t in a pandemic because I am not an entitled twat.

Just a judgemental one then.

GrinXmas GrinGrin

I second that.

We are all selfish and inherently concerned about ourselves/our family first. I will follow the rules but I don't fancy making a martyr out of myself by inventing new ones. The government is there to make the rules for the good of the country/the majority. I will follow those rules and then do what I think will benefit my family the most within the limits of those rules.
Personally I wouldn't go abroad on holiday atm as it doesn't sound much fun at all.
But I would go abroad to see family if I could.

Kaliorphic · 20/12/2020 22:23

I know a couple who were repatriated in March and they had to pay £2000.

That's interesting. I didn't know that. One of my friends played a big role in getting people back home back in march. I'll have to ask them about that.

rookiemere · 20/12/2020 22:23

Yes but by this stage people have to know that travelling abroad is a lottery. I seriously considered going away a few weeks ago, but weighing up all the risks - having a positive test myself and having to isolate abroad at my own cost, someone on the plane testing positive and resultant track and trace isolation, numbers getting higher at either end leading to issues with flights, knowing that travel insurance is seemingly designed to avoid paying out anything- and most importantly thinking how stupid I'd feel if something did go wrong, put me off.

In Scotland Nicola Sturgeon has been very clear for months - choose to travel abroad at the minute , but be aware that things can change on a daily basis.

Kaliorphic · 20/12/2020 22:24

Can easily afford to travel but I don’t in a pandemic because I am not an entitled twat

That's nice dear. Just a sanctimonious one then.

Temporary1234 · 20/12/2020 22:26

I do find that ever since I started reading mumsnet I developed social anxiety because I somehow feel like most mums are probably just as judgemental as on the board here.

It seems like you can’t step a foot without having someone resent u.

Sorry it sounds like you are just jealous. Why? If you go away and are prepared to follow the rules in the country you are going to and then follow the British rules when you come back, what is the problem.

Everyone has their own commitments, mine are to my bubble of 3 for Christmas day, my choice, and I will not want to miss seeing my family then. If I didn't, I would go away with my hubby, to Spain which is allowed and then stay there until it was safe to return home, as we are retired, have a holiday home in Spain there wouldn't be a problem. Many of our friends who aren't able to see their children due to different tiers etc are away. We aren't because we have made the choice, to stay here and we are allowed to have our little bubble for Christmas day. We will stick to the rules here.

Don't get yourself in a "tizzy" about everyone else, do what is right for you and your family x

Kaliorphic · 20/12/2020 22:29

Yes I am judging you you ignorant fucking bitch

Crikey, you need to keep a lid on that temper. It can't be good for you.

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 20/12/2020 22:30

The op reminds of that scene in Airplane!, when it cuts to a rent-a-gob talk show commentator opining, “they bought their tickets, they knew the risks. I say: let ‘em crash!”

M4J4 · 20/12/2020 22:31

Yes I am judging you you ignorant fucking bitch

Even though I said I haven’t been away anywhere?

I love it when I’m proven right, when the stay-at-home brigade snap and reveal just how nasty they are 😂
