To hope those selfish people on holiday hurry back!

We are in a global pandemic, cases rising exponentially. Didn’t take a rocket scientist to anticipate that major restrictions were going to be put in place. It is not the time to take an entirely selfish holiday.

I’ve been flabbergasted at the number of people I’ve seen on social media jetting off to get some sun. We’d all love a holiday but I can’t believe people thought this really was ok!

And now flights are being suspended and people are potentially getting stuck.

AIBU to have limited sympathy?

I'm shocked at the number of people saying the OP is 'jealous' and how people are 'entitled' to go away for a holiday. This is the reason the UK is in the state it is in. If people are not going to take responsibility for themselves, its no wonder Europe is banning UK flights from entering their countries.

Kaliorphic · 20/12/2020 22:31

“they bought their tickets, they knew the risks. I say: let ‘em crash

Absolutely!Grin

M4J4 · 20/12/2020 22:32

Satish, what are you doing on a forum for women anyway?

Flights are banned because of the new variant. Not because of the behaviour of British people.

I believe that even in a pandemic the airline has to get you back home - at least within the European zone. Different for long haul.

AIMD · 20/12/2020 22:34

I wouldn’t have sympathy for people who get stranded if they booked their holiday since the pandemic. I mean throughout this pandemic it’s been clear things change quickly and track restrictions can be imposed. So anyone booking and going on holiday since the pandemic has chosen to take the risk of their plans being interrupted by covid.

I do feel for people who visited family abroad or had a special holiday booked a long time ago.

If there are restrictions they’ve hardly come out of the blue.

Thismustbelove · 20/12/2020 22:36

The new variant is rampant in the UK. Do you think that is due to people adhering to restricting their movements????

CupOfTeaAlonePlease · 20/12/2020 22:38

I agree with you OP, incredibly selfish to go on holiday during a global pandemic, especially when there is a vaccine on its way - its not like they can never travel again, if they wait a year it will be a lot safer for everyone.

And I agree that if you travel now you are running a risk, and why should the public bail you out in the form of consular assistance?

Walkaround · 20/12/2020 22:41

@Thismustbelove - do you think the virus knows not to mutate in supermarkets, factories, schools, farms, and when importing and exporting food, medicines, PPE, etc?

Grittlelayrabbit · 20/12/2020 22:41

I’m just back from a holiday to a non-quarantine area. Their local covid restrictions and cleanliness were way way more enforced than here. I couldn’t believe it at first. All children over 6 and all adults must wear masks at all times. Hand sanitiser between courses, deep steam cleaning going on constantly. We didn’t speak to anyone else because there was hardly anyone there, and I’m sure we were all far safer there, sitting on a deserted beach, than we would have been if I’d left the kids in school.

We were insured to the teeth of anything went wrong, and had to have PCR tests and temp tests and local track and trace.

There was no one else near us on the plane, less than 1/4 full, and we didn’t have any luggage apart from hand luggage.

It was still lovely, exactly what we needed after a particularly shitty year. Smile

Walkaround · 20/12/2020 22:41

As for hospitals - close those fuckers right down. Breeding grounds for mutating viruses, they are.

Walkaround · 20/12/2020 22:42

Let everyone out of prison, too - dreadful environment in a pandemic.

Grittlelayrabbit · 20/12/2020 22:42

We wouldn’t have needed bloody consulate assistance anyway, firstly because that’s what we had insurance for, and secondly because there isn’t actually ANY consular assistance where we went!

Thismustbelove · 20/12/2020 22:46

What has your question to do with exactly. I can't figure out if you are being deliberately ridiculous. The whole point is not to stop the virus which is impossible unless all borders are shut down. The point is to restrict it as much as possible while weighing up the necessity to keep some things open to keep the economy going.

CupOfTeaAlonePlease · 20/12/2020 23:03

@Grittlelayrabbit "I’m sure we were all far safer there" Well as long as you and your family felt safe, I suppose that is all that matters....Hmm

Womencanlift · 20/12/2020 23:04

Hopefully this latest shit show means that the government at least consider implementing the Australian system - no one in or out of the country without extremely good reason and then if you do get in straight to a hotel and strict quarantine. None of this landing at the airport and then making your own way home

Until last week when Sydney have had a peak (tiny peak in comparison to UK numbers) my mates there have basically been living a normal life. Shops open, bars open, people out and about, minimal social distancing - oh what it could have been here if we had a decent government

Grittlelayrabbit · 20/12/2020 23:07

Cupofteaalone if we were safer there than at school, what’s the problem?

MynephewR · 20/12/2020 23:08

🙄 So fed up of threads like these. The sTaYtHeFuCkAtHoMe brigade are out in force again. It's almost as bad as it was in March/April on here.

"This person is selfish, that person is selfish, next doors cousins friends cat is bloody selfish". OK, fine, everyone is selfish! There, can you please pipe down now? Maybe you could get yourself a hobby to occupy your time?

CupOfTeaAlonePlease · 20/12/2020 23:14

@Grittlelayrabbit The problem is that you and your little family aren't the only people on earth. Your actions impact other people. You and your family went from what is a high risk area in a global sense (UK, children in school, few restrictions) to an area which was lower risk and in doing so - brought your risk on tour with you. 1/4 of a plan was breathing the same air as you, the people bringing you your 'courses' and washing your plates, changing your sheets etc were exposed to you. you can tell yourself that masks and sanitiser protect everyone completely I suppose, but then how do you explain the large numbers of healthcare workers who have come down with COVID19 despite having the more knowledge and resources than your average coastal area waiter or hotel staff member?

Your post is thinking only of yourselves.

Glad you and yours had a lovely time though.

@Thismustbelove - my comments have to do with your comments. You can’t confidently blame a mutation running rampant on people not adhering to rules, as it might have happened anyway, so to appear to blame it on rule breaking, as you clearly did, is sanctimonious.
Walkaround · 20/12/2020 23:15

Or, @Thismustbelove, did your “adhering” slip in there accidentally?

MzHz · 20/12/2020 23:16

Schadenfreude doesn’t get any less ugly when it’s virtue signalled Hmm

Louloulouloubells · 20/12/2020 23:20

I wish people like yourself OP would stop being so sanctimonous.

Thismustbelove · 20/12/2020 23:22

Walkaround

When the majority of people in ROI are sticking to rules, restricting their movements and sending ambulances to NI in a last ditch effort to help hospitals which are filled to capacity, it is perfectly reasonable to criticise people who feel a sense of entitlement to go on bloody holidays!

Walkaround · 20/12/2020 23:30

@Thismustbelove - then don’t pretend you understand the need to keep the economy going, if you are going to judge people who are not breaking any rules on travel restrictions. If something is allowed, it is allowed. You not liking it has f* all to do with adherence to rules.

M4J4 · 20/12/2020 23:48

I agree! I can only think they’re all Tories who would prefer to chastise plebs rather than govt.
