To think a woman wouldn't be praised for this like a man was

Seen this story a few times today about Tom Cruise screaming at crew members on the set of Mission Impossible 7 for not social distancing and threatening to fire them www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/entertainment-arts-55330579

The comments on social media are almost unanimously positive, lots of "good for him" "well done Tom" and "he's gone up in my estimation".

Any time I see something like this I imagine how the reaction would be if it was a story about a woman. If Nicole Kidman had done this I bet my bottom dollar she'd be branded a psycho, hysterical, over emotional, needs to calm down, who does she think she is speaking like that to those poor men etc.

FWIW I think he behaved appallingly if my boss screamed at me at work I'd have something to say about it.

But AIBU to think a woman would have been treated differently for doing the same thing?

She’d 100% be called a “Karen”.

EmmaStone · 16/12/2020 16:35

I was going to say, 'well, he's not the boss, and he can't make those decisions'. But. He is one of the bosses.

I understand his sentiment, but it's not a great way of executing it. And I agree, if it was a woman, she'd totally be described as not knowing her place.

Yes!!

Their production has already had to close down more than once because of outbreaks so in this case, I think you're wrong. If the lead (who was also the name behind the franchise, an a producer etc) was a female, then she would be given the same response for the most part.

If course Tom Cruise is getting pissed off. They dont want to shut down yet again because staff members wont follow the rules.

Yup.
Katgolde · 16/12/2020 16:42

It makes me think of how Priti Patel was treated for allegedly having a forthright attitude in the workplace.

BumBurnerBum · 16/12/2020 16:48

I agree a woman behaving like this would have been called irrational and hysterical. Both things he has shown himself to be, yet sweary men are somehow something to be admired.

Priti Patel has the emotional compassion and communication of a teaspoon. There is no comparison here.

Op I personally think it's a very odd thing to try and compare to how a woman would be received , if I'm honest.

FFS what is it with Mumsnetters and “screaming”?!

The article literally says:
Tom Cruise: Recording emerges of star 'shouting at film crew' over Covid

And then reiterates:
A recording has emerged of Tom Cruise apparently shouting at workers

But on Mumsnet, he’s “screaming”.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 16/12/2020 17:01

Why is it odd?

We live in a sexist society. It's important to be aware of the double standards that oppress us. It's important to be aware of male privilege

@MaskingForIt what exactly is the difference between screaming and shouting? As far as I can see it Tom Cryise raised his voice in an aggressive manner at his subordinates

Ha, that's quite funny. In Patel's case there was a report on bullying that was damning enough that our glorious leader tried to suppress it.

MaskingForIt · 16/12/2020 17:03

FWIW I think he behaved appallingly if my boss screamed at me at work I'd have something to say about it.

If my boss screamed at work I’d ask them what they were scared of.

I wouldn’t be too impressed at being shouted at though.

I was going to say this exact thing.
Butchyrestingface · 16/12/2020 17:04

He's a egotistical, delusional dick. Surely there's a spare couch somewhere that needs jumped on?

halcyondays · 16/12/2020 17:05

People repeatedly not social distancing got shouted at by the boss. Aw did sums.

halcyondays · 16/12/2020 17:06

Diddums not did sums.

PicsInRed · 16/12/2020 17:06

If it was a woman of his age, she'd be torn to pieces and social media shamed. She'd be a meme.

But women are torn apart for far less ...than what he is praised for. Hmm

heydoggie · 16/12/2020 17:07

I think it would depend on the public profile of the woman.

If it was someone who had a positive public perception, I think it could be received in a 'you go girl' kind of a way. I think - oddly, given the scientology and ex-wives - Tom Cruise is generally perceived as likeable and very hard working. All that does his own stunts stuff.

I'm struggling to think of a woman with a similar profile but I think it could be presented positively, but equally there are relatively few women in a similar position - producer and star, action hero in their fifties, positive public perception - I can't actually think of any.... so hard to judge. But I could see it go either way.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 16/12/2020 17:07

For clarity - though personally I think it beggars belief that I have to explain this - I'm not asking if his behaviour was unreasonable, I just mentioned that I thought it was. The AIBU is about the double standards around of women did this.

Screaming is more high-pitched than shouting.

nosswith · 16/12/2020 17:08

Although both of them would be right to do so, I agree that a woman would be judged differently.

Gemma Collins has made a living out of screeching and bawling and shouting and being an all round diva. She is far from shamed.

Can you tell me a man who has done this?

RandomLondoner · 16/12/2020 17:10

Shouting is merely being loud. Screaming also implies a change in pitch to one that is painful to listen to.

MrsLebowski · 16/12/2020 17:11

Tom probably needs to get his thetan scanned or something.
