Been told I have ' thunder thighs '

So, I was joking at work that if I drank less wine, I'd be at least a stone lighter. This young girl I work with who is lovely and I like said something like 'oh no, you have a great figure, I want to put weight on , you've got thunder thighs ' Grin She's probably a size 10, I wear size 12 jeans , say from Next where the sizes are bigger and probably a 14 in coats or tops from shops like Dorothy Perkins as I have big boobs and a bit of a podgy belly .

I know she wasn't being horrible but I thought 'thunder thighs' were on bigger ladies ? I suppose they are quite big but not out of proportion at all. What do you think?

ETA I'm 5 foot 6 and weigh 11 stone 5

I don't understand how she wasn't being horrible?! Are thunder thighs desirable?

RumpoleoftheBaileys · 10/12/2020 14:12

@AnnoyedByAlfieBear

Mine are. Could crush a man's head...

Milkshake7489 · 10/12/2020 14:12

How old is she? I'm reliably informed (by much younger and cooler family members) that bigger and quite muscular thighs are in fashion.

That along with a large bum and small boobs seem to be the ideal... I think it's to do with the trend to look strong and the popularity of fitness influencers showing off their gym bodies?

Apart from the ridiculousness of womens bodies being subject to fashion trends, I'm pretty happy with this development!

dallafela · 10/12/2020 14:12

Based on the context it doesn't sound like she was intending to insult you. Strong/thick thighs, bums and hips are definitely what a lot of young women are aspiring to at the moment so she might legitimately have been complimenting you, without realising that 'thunder thighs' has not until now been regarded as complimentary.

easterndreaming · 10/12/2020 14:13

If she is youngish and possibly naturally slim she might very well wish to have larger thighs herself. Nowadays it's not the fashion to be super skinny as it was 20 years ago. Possibly thunder thighs wasn't the best description to use but if she if a pleasant person in general then I wouldn't take it as a negative comment

ParkingFeud · 10/12/2020 14:15

I remember a young male colleague saying this to boss's wife once, not realising it was offensive! I can't remember how it came up but it became a lasting joke!

hugocat · 10/12/2020 14:15

She is 23 and African if that is really relevant to mention.

I'm not offended but do you consider someone my size big enough to have 'thunder thighs'

OP posts:
dallafela · 10/12/2020 14:22

@hugocat no, at your size I doubt you're what I imagine when I think of 'thunder thighs', but that's because I've grown up with 'thunder thighs' being a deliberate insult and meaning fat and it doesn't sound like you're fat. This woman's image of 'thunder thighs' is probably very different to yours and quite possibly just means stong and muscular, which as I said upthread is a look a lot of young women are really wanting at the moment.

When I think about thunder out of the context of 'thunder thighs' I think it actually makes a lot more sense meaning 'strong' than 'large'.

PoppyOppy · 10/12/2020 14:22

Thunder thighs is an insult. Someone I was dating once said I had ”sturdy legs” so I told him that he was never going to be getting between them if that's what he thought of me and walked away.

Yes.

Fair enough! I did want honest answers here.

I think thunder thighs or ‘thick’ thighs and a big bum is desirable these days. All the cool kids want to be the same shape as Kim Kardashian or Cardi B.

hugocat · 10/12/2020 14:26

Because she's so young, maybe she doesn't realise that term used to be an insultGrin

OP posts:
dontgobaconmyheart · 10/12/2020 14:26

It doesn't sound as if she meant it offensively given she also said she wanted to put on weight OP. It is the (fleeting I'm sure since they all are) fashion to have muscular thighs currently.

'Thunder thighs' isn't an official term is it so I think there's limited point trying to work out if you fit the bill for something that has absolutely no metric. Everyone bears their weight differently and has a differing body shape. Your weight and height aren't going to allow anyone here to hypothesise anything about that and it seems a shame to start doubting your own body to this degree based on one persons comment.

Spongebobsquarefringe · 10/12/2020 14:27

My thighs are muscly from running, they look out of proportion especially in shorts, I cools also probably crush a mans head

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 10/12/2020 14:27

It's rude and I would have been horrified if someone said it to me, whatever their age and excuse.

honeylulu · 10/12/2020 14:28

Are you sure she didn't say "thick thighs"? That is the expression for the wide, muscular thighed look that young women often aspire to these days.

Thunder thighs would be rude/ insulting unless she's perhaps misunderstood the term and thinks it means something like "stunning".

I'm struggling to match the insult with her view that you have "a lovely figure" which surely must be a compliment.

dallafela · 10/12/2020 14:29

@PoppyOppy no, thunder thighs was an insult, but given that a lot of young women want thicker, muscular thighs nowadays it might not be intended as one.

If a man my age (mid-thirties) called me thunder thighs I'd take it as an insult because it would likely be intended as one, as he would have grown up when I did and known it was a fairly common way to insult larger girls. Not necessarily the same coming from somebody younger.

grassisjeweled · 10/12/2020 14:29

Is it a language thing? Like bubble butt?

Are TT's now à la mode?

N0tthe0nlyfruit · 10/12/2020 14:29

I think this could possibly be an age/cultural miscommunication and I think she might have been complimenting you!

Yeah she definitely said 'thunder thighs' haha

I think this is probably true. She may have meant it as a compliment.

There was thread on here a while back started by somebody in their late teens who was about to go full no-contact with a lifetime friend because they had said she had a small bum.

You wide-eyedly doubt the relevance of suddenly mentioning her ethnicity mid-thread? Hmm
