Been told I have ' thunder thighs '

So, I was joking at work that if I drank less wine, I'd be at least a stone lighter. This young girl I work with who is lovely and I like said something like 'oh no, you have a great figure, I want to put weight on , you've got thunder thighs ' Grin She's probably a size 10, I wear size 12 jeans , say from Next where the sizes are bigger and probably a 14 in coats or tops from shops like Dorothy Perkins as I have big boobs and a bit of a podgy belly .

I know she wasn't being horrible but I thought 'thunder thighs' were on bigger ladies ? I suppose they are quite big but not out of proportion at all. What do you think?

Just seen the thread is from December.....are chunky thighs still fashionable now it's a different year...and nearly April!Wink
😂

orangecinnamon · 31/03/2021 17:51

@Milkshake7489

How old is she? I'm reliably informed (by much younger and cooler family members) that bigger and quite muscular thighs are in fashion.

That along with a large bum and small boobs seem to be the ideal... I think it's to do with the trend to look strong and the popularity of fitness influencers showing off their gym bodies?

Apart from the ridiculousness of womens bodies being subject to fashion trends, I'm pretty happy with this development!

Yup this...
Itsalwayssunnyin · 31/03/2021 17:51

Her choice of wording was bad but I think she was actually being complimentary. I know a lot of women who train weights in the gym to get bigger, curvier thighs! I think big thighs are curvaceous and feminine!

orangecinnamon · 31/03/2021 17:51

Oh bollix sorry all

poppycat10 · 31/03/2021 17:52

not every 50+ year old consider "thunder thighs", Beyonce or strong bodies as an insult. As being muscly becomes more and more an health issue as opposed to a fashionable trend as you get older, it's definitively the opposite of an insult for many "mature" women. Why do you find it so easy to dismiss women over 50

I am a sporty 49 and I would have thought thunder thighs was an insult. I've learnt from this thread that it's not. I am certainly not dismissing women over 50 and I wonder why you think the pp was? In our day "thunder thighs" was an insult and meant they were fat, not muscly.

smellyolddog · 31/03/2021 18:02

I'd love that compliment as I train at the gym specifically to get bigger thighs..love this thread and how I've spent my life hating be short and curvy, I knew I'd get my turn at having something fashionable, but now my face is wrinkly 😬

notaknob · 31/03/2021 18:06

You are definitely big enough to have thunder thighs. I've had them all my life regardless of being underweight at times. I'm 9.5 stone.

I fucking love them. I wouldn't change a thing about them.
Own those thighs!

Benjispruce2 · 31/03/2021 18:09

I’m 50 and in my 20s, it was desirable to look like the female characters in Friends or All Saints in their hipster cargo pants.I’m a slight pear and wanted no hips or thighs! The Arabella Weir sketch in The Fast Show sums it up with her catchphrase, “Does my bum look big in this?” I was born too late!!Grin

Cam2020 · 31/03/2021 18:11

you are spectacularly missing my point... not every 50+ year old consider "thunder thighs", Beyonce or strong bodies as an insult.

As being muscly becomes more and more an health issue as opposed to a fashionable trend as you get older, it's definitively the opposite of an insult for many "mature" women.

Why do you find it so easy to dismiss women over 50?

I'm not dismissing anyone. The point was, to someone around 50 (as an example), the term thunder thighs is more likely to mean flabby thighs and be used as an insult, compared to someone 20 who is more likely to mean strong. If a 50 year old used the word 'bear' I'd assume they were talking about an animal not slang used by teens (10 years, ago but I'm not up in slang).

50 was just PP's examole. I'm almost 40 and I'd think of it as an insult at first, am i dismissing myself also?

StrudelSoup · 31/03/2021 18:28

"Cam2020 50 was just PP's examole. I'm almost 40 and I'd think of it as an insult at first, am i dismissing myself also?"

I dunno. I don't think so. I got your point - it's the age of the person making the comment that is relevant. That other poster had a massive chip on her shoulder and seemed to WANT to be dismissed so she could rant about it.

I'm nearly 50. Gonna get a butt implant like Madonna and sit and reflect on the matter some more on my giant fashionable arse...

Lovemusic33 · 31/03/2021 18:29

I’m a size 12 with thunder thighs, not sure I would be pleased with someone pointing it out to me though 😬

Lovemusic33 · 31/03/2021 18:30

I weight 10 stone, have skinny legs from the knees down but big thighs and wide hips.

Violinist64 · 31/03/2021 18:39

Having always had thunder thighs as part of a hormonal condition, l have never been keen on the term. You mentioned that this young lady comes from an African country and this could well be relevant as to be larger is often considered a sign of beauty for many African ladies. Think of Precious Ramotswe of the Number One Ladies Detective Agency series and her “traditional build.” I met one African lady, who said that she felt at her best when she was a size 18.

Fountainsoftea · 31/03/2021 18:48

I heard a song last summer and it kind of goes:"thunder thighs, pretty pretty thunder thighs". It did cross my mind then that tt might be becoming ameliorated, but it will always remind me of my 11 year old self, in a swimming costume during swimming lessons, wondering why my thighs were so much bigger than everyone else's (er, because you were twice their height).

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 31/03/2021 18:55

Maybe I could sell mine?🤣🤣

1forAll74 · 31/03/2021 18:56

I haven'theard the term thunder thighs for years and years. In the 60's era it was commonly used by men towards their wives, who had somewhat fattened up after having children, and the men had no room to sit next to their wives on the sofa, as they had developed big thunder thighs.. ha ha,

NiceGerbil · 31/03/2021 18:57

It means very strong (and to do with build). Think rugby player thighs.

It's always been used as not complimentary (not feminine to be strong) but I'd think fuck em nothing wrong at all, and plenty good about being strong.

CombatBarbie · 31/03/2021 19:09

Ah see know I know her age, it's actually a compliment!! Solid thighs/ass is the current fad.

IdblowJonSnow · 31/03/2021 19:21

Delighted to hear my own thunder thighs are finally in fashion!
I'm a size 10 but have always had big thighs!

workshy44 · 31/03/2021 19:25

I’m slightly taller and three stone lighter so would expect yes you have biggish thighs. Vanity sizing is the worst , it gives people a false sense of security and that they are not “that big”.

AdultierAdult · 31/03/2021 19:37

Given the cultural context you've given I don't think it's an insult, no.

Emeraldshamrock · 31/03/2021 19:37

Echoing others thunder thighs is used complimentary these days.

Emeraldshamrock · 31/03/2021 19:41

Given the cultural context you've given I don't think it's an insult, no.
I'm not sure it is cultural these days but widely admired the fuller strong female look, my nieces do squats classes to bulk their bums and thighs.
All bodies should be celebrated.

Caiti19 · 31/03/2021 19:41

thevicarstroketwice - you're correct, I had no idea the meaning of "thunder thighs" had mutated to the degree that it now means the exact opposite of what it did when the term was being bandied about in my youth. It used to mean "giant thighs of lard"! Now it seems it means "thighs that are muscular and toned". I had no idea!

Larryslockdownlunch · 31/03/2021 19:48

I'm a similar height and weight and yes I'd refer to my thighs as thunder thighs. I'd probably punch anyone else that did though 😂
