Been told I have ' thunder thighs '

So, I was joking at work that if I drank less wine, I'd be at least a stone lighter. This young girl I work with who is lovely and I like said something like 'oh no, you have a great figure, I want to put weight on , you've got thunder thighs ' Grin She's probably a size 10, I wear size 12 jeans , say from Next where the sizes are bigger and probably a 14 in coats or tops from shops like Dorothy Perkins as I have big boobs and a bit of a podgy belly .

I know she wasn't being horrible but I thought 'thunder thighs' were on bigger ladies ? I suppose they are quite big but not out of proportion at all. What do you think?

OP posts:
MaidenAeden · 31/03/2021 15:50

I wouldn't have been able to stop smiling if someone said that to me. I've had naturally skinny thighs from when I supposedly hit 'puberty'. I've tried eating certain foods religiously and have had thighs-focused circuits but looks like nothing works promisingly well. If y'all have a secret, please consider letting me in, lol

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 31/03/2021 15:55

Strong thick thighs and big round bums are in. You say she’s younger so she’s given you a compliment. If this was a few years ago when it was all about thigh gap, it would be an insult. That’s why it’s best not to bother following any trends.

FlyingByTheSeatof · 31/03/2021 15:55

Yes younger girls want to be 'thicker' these days so 'thunder thighs' are seen as very desirable.

However I'd also be Shock and upset if someone said that to me.

stackemhigh · 31/03/2021 15:57

Ah thunder thighs berings back memories of the 90s!

I think she meant it as a compliment, like She-Ra thighs.

MrsPaddyGrant · 31/03/2021 16:16

I think its a compliment on your body shape - their are a few songs out at the moment by female singers that reference thunder (thunda) thighs and its a celebration.

TheOrigRights · 31/03/2021 16:21

@hugocat

She is 23 and African if that is really relevant to mention.

I'm not offended but do you consider someone my size big enough to have 'thunder thighs'

Well you're a little bit over the top end of a healthy weight for your height (11st 2lb) so you must be fairly large and unless you are a javelin thrower or professional rugby player, you're unlikely to be one of the BMI outliers.

I had no idea having large thighs was desirable these days. At 50, I am very strong but I am very slim and would look daft with massive thighs.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 31/03/2021 16:37

Yes, TheOrigRights, but are you teeny-weeny? This is what counts.

millionmilesaway · 31/03/2021 16:41

It is considered a compliment in some circles I've moved in.

thevicarstroketwice · 31/03/2021 16:43

@WhatATimeToBeAlive

It's rude and I would have been horrified if someone said it to me, whatever their age and excuse.
never heard of "strong is the new skinny"?

A genuine compliment is not rude.

me4real · 31/03/2021 16:44

She was rude. Sometimes people can be nasty to make themselves feel better. It's not ok.

me4real · 31/03/2021 16:45

I know that being 'thicc'/ having a big bum is seen as the trend/covetable by younger women, though. But 'thunder thighs' isn't a good way of putting it.

stackemhigh · 31/03/2021 16:47

It reminds me of Shakira ‘whenever, wherever’ song:

‘Lucky I have strong legs like my mother
To run for cover when I need it’

‘Lucky that my breasts are small and humble
So you don't confuse them with mountains’

jerometheturnipking · 31/03/2021 16:47

Yep, "strong is the new skinny". Thunder thighs is a compliment these days.

Morgoth · 31/03/2021 16:51

Big muscly thighs are really in at the moment. There’s Instagram models who have built up followings of millions of followers just for their large thighs and moderate bodybuilder physique. It’s a desirable thing to have at the moment along with of course big thick asses. Think the Amazonian women in Futurama kind of look. Lots of guys seem to be obsessed with them. She most likely meant it as a compliment but I know why you were initially taken aback as “thunder thighs” is a pretty 90s term for describing fat thighs but I don’t think she meant it this way.

category12 · 31/03/2021 16:55

In context, it was clearly intended as a compliment.

AcornAutumn · 31/03/2021 16:55

Could she have said "stunner" or "stunning"?

I need to know if thunder thighs is going to be a compliment!

thevicarstroketwice · 31/03/2021 16:56

@me4real

She was rude. Sometimes people can be nasty to make themselves feel better. It's not ok.
you are projecting and being ridiculous frankly. What exactly do you think was nasty?

It's the OP who was talking about carrying too much weight to start with, that other girl was replying and not making a comment out of the blue.

Not only it's expected than when someone says or joke about being fat (or could lose some weight or whatever), you are supposed to reply "of course not, Hmm

but in this case it clearly was genuine.

Being overly skinny is not fashionable these days. And frankly, that's a good thing. Much healthier to go for fitter and stronger bodies.

StrudelSoup · 31/03/2021 16:56

@hugocat

Isn't it crazy how bigger bums and legs are more fashionable now? When I was a teenager we all wanted to look like Kate Moss!
Yeah, but as usual it's not as good as it sounds because you're "supposed" to have a tiny waist to go with it apparently. And obviously large boobs and butt.

OP, it was meant as a compliment. My teen DD is tall and pretty skinny and is desperate for what she calls "chunky, curvy thighs". She's often asking me if her butt looks big in whatever she's wearing. It's the absolute opposite of when I was young and the ideal pushed in our faces seemed to be Darcey Bussell after a month on heroin and a dose of stomach flu.

millenialblush · 31/03/2021 16:57

Thick thighs are defo in (coming from a fellow thunder thigher)

BehindMyEyes · 31/03/2021 16:57

@hugocat

It is relevant as there are very different cultural ideas about what looks good etc . She probably likes the "thick" thigh look or thunder thighs as she calls them .
Oblomov21 · 31/03/2021 17:00

She sounds incredibly young and naieve and very unaware of his awful such a statement is.

GreySkyClouds · 31/03/2021 17:03

@hugocat

Is English her first language?
Benjispruce2 · 31/03/2021 17:04

I have DDs 17&20 and am told big/thunder thighs and big bum is now desirable! She meant it as a compliment Grin

broadstrokes · 31/03/2021 17:06

From what you have said about her complimenting your figure, I imagine it was meant in a sort of empowering Wonder Woman sort of way?

thevicarstroketwice · 31/03/2021 17:07

Thunder thighs, coming from a younger person is a compliment.
From someone 50 plus it’s nasty

Even more "mature" people follow trends, or are proud of their sporty body. I don't intend to become a flabby mess when I reach 50, do you?!
