So, I was joking at work that if I drank less wine, I'd be at least a stone lighter. This young girl I work with who is lovely and I like said something like 'oh no, you have a great figure, I want to put weight on , you've got thunder thighs ' Grin She's probably a size 10, I wear size 12 jeans , say from Next where the sizes are bigger and probably a 14 in coats or tops from shops like Dorothy Perkins as I have big boobs and a bit of a podgy belly .

I know she wasn't being horrible but I thought 'thunder thighs' were on bigger ladies ? I suppose they are quite big but not out of proportion at all. What do you think?

It’s all about being strong and toned. If you work out you tend to be more ‘built’ than skinny. Hence ‘strong is the new skinny’. Khloe Kardashian springs to mind. It’s actually quite a healthy look and I’m all for it. Wish I had it Grin
@realsunkissedtan British people aren’t very good (generalising here) at learning languages. Many of us have one and perhaps remember a few words from French from school. So, I would think someone who knew several languages was clever and I do find it quite impressive.
A PP wasn’t being dismissive of over 50s at all, simply trying to point out that back in the day thunder thighs wasn’t the compliment it is now Hmm

Oh my - please don’t be upset, I can assure you judging by her age that this was meant as a great compliment to you! I’m 41 & I definitely remember the term was, granted, an insult but the current ‘fashion’ for bodies is all about curves in the right places and toned, strong thighs (with a curved butt to match if you’re lucky. I guarantee she meant it as a great compliment to your shape, you’re have an on trend physique - lucky you!

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe

Yes, TheOrigRights, but are you teeny-weeny? This is what counts.
Grin I'm 5' 8" so no!

I’m African and in my culture “thunder thighs” is a compliment , it means big and muscular, it’s what’s desirable and seen as sexy, nothing to do with weight. I’ve always been slim and have thunder thighs. An example will be Beyoncé or Serena Williams etc , she meant it as a compliment, also in my culture it’s normal to call someone fat, it’s not offensive as it is here, it’s just a description of a body type and sometimes a compliment, but I wouldn’t dream calling someone fat here 😄.

Thunder highs / thick thighs are definitely nothing to be ashamed of these days. If you have strong thighs own them and be confident. A lot of women train hard to get their thighs bigger. She probably meant it as a compliment.

^^

Body fashions for women change often and are not designed to make women happy.

I remember a headline in Vogue maybe, a few years ago, derided on here. Big breasts are out! I mean what? Ok. Where do I put them till they come back?

Strong women are not celebrated by men in general, let alone fashion. That's strong in body/ personality/ God forbid both. Or very clever and able to show them up as wrong when they argue. Women with these things get derided. Men don't like it. Hurts their egos. Too challenging.

In the end women come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and having naturally strong areas is a good thing!
