Been told I have ' thunder thighs '

So, I was joking at work that if I drank less wine, I'd be at least a stone lighter. This young girl I work with who is lovely and I like said something like 'oh no, you have a great figure, I want to put weight on , you've got thunder thighs ' Grin She's probably a size 10, I wear size 12 jeans , say from Next where the sizes are bigger and probably a 14 in coats or tops from shops like Dorothy Perkins as I have big boobs and a bit of a podgy belly .

I know she wasn't being horrible but I thought 'thunder thighs' were on bigger ladies ? I suppose they are quite big but not out of proportion at all. What do you think?

OP posts:
BehindMyEyes · 31/03/2021 17:07

If you have ever lived abroad you will know that they are far more outspoken than we are about appearance - Madam, you have put on weight, you need to get sexy again or you need to stop drinking Diet drinks as you need more booty ( substitute the local word) .

bridgetreilly · 31/03/2021 17:08

It's not an objective term. You could be any size and have 'thunder thighs' in someone else's estimation. You are massively overthinking this. It's your body, no one else's opinion on it matters.

Notjustanymum · 31/03/2021 17:09

It used to be an insult, but is definitely not any more. It’s the cult of “the booty” isn’t it?

VaVaGloom · 31/03/2021 17:10

Oh the news that rounded bums and large thighs are fashionable is music to my ears!

I have only heard of thunder thighs being used as a derogative term. From the sounds of your weight / height OP it does sound like you are on the larger side though I would have thought that's rude to say to someone's face.

BadMudda · 31/03/2021 17:10

I have big thighs .
I also have boobs to die for and ( or so I'm told) a lovely face.

Don't give it a second thought . Seriously.

Wide · 31/03/2021 17:11

It would have been meant as a compliment, the younger generation all want those huge chunky legs and buma whereas i am 32 and just missed that trend, it was all about petiteness for me! Althiugh I have the bubble butt which I don't want, I didn't know it was called a bubble butt until this thread

user1471462428 · 31/03/2021 17:13

It’s a Beyoncé thing apparently . I’m a cyclist and have huge thighs that have been complimented by youngsters

WeavingWandering · 31/03/2021 17:14

I’m a size 6 and still get called every variation of big bum/thunder size going given the quite frankly ridiculous waist to bum ratio that’s the ban of my clothes buying existence (despite suddenly being popular after years of teasing!)

toocold54 · 31/03/2021 17:18

Thunder thighs is an insult. Someone I was dating once said I had ”sturdy legs” so I told him that he was never going to be getting between them if that's what he thought of me and walked away.

Thunder thighs is not an insult.

It may have been a few years ago but times have changed and women are accepted as having meat on their thighs. I think the UK does still have some people who think women should have slim thighs but it was obvious she was giving you a compliment and not trying to be insulting. But I guess that’s like a lot of terms they can mean different things depending on if they are being nice or not.

anditgoeson · 31/03/2021 17:18

I think it was meant as a compliment, I used to have 'thunder thighs' then I lost lots of weight and lost them, now I have them back and I'm proud of them. Love having big strong legs. My kids call me jelly belly which isn't so great though!

Cam2020 · 31/03/2021 17:21

Even more "mature" people follow trends, or are proud of their sporty body. I don't intend to become a flabby mess when I reach 50, do you?!

That poster was talking about the intention of person who said it in terms if age, not the person it was aimed at!

Chips for dinner?

MumofPsuedoAdult · 31/03/2021 17:23

@Milkshake7489

How old is she? I'm reliably informed (by much younger and cooler family members) that bigger and quite muscular thighs are in fashion.

That along with a large bum and small boobs seem to be the ideal... I think it's to do with the trend to look strong and the popularity of fitness influencers showing off their gym bodies?

Apart from the ridiculousness of womens bodies being subject to fashion trends, I'm pretty happy with this development!

Yay! I finally have a figure that's coming into fashion Grin.

Welcome to the larger-thighs-smaller-boobs brigade

you are spectacularly missing my point... not every 50+ year old consider "thunder thighs", Beyonce or strong bodies as an insult.

As being muscly becomes more and more an health issue as opposed to a fashionable trend as you get older, it's definitively the opposite of an insult for many "mature" women.

Why do you find it so easy to dismiss women over 50?

GrumpyHoonMain · 31/03/2021 17:28

Thunder thighs is a compliment now

thevicarstroketwice · 31/03/2021 17:31

Anyone believing the term thunder thighs is an insult should educate themselves.

There are worst body goals, at any age...

Ki0612 · 31/03/2021 17:36

I thought I had thunder thighs when I was young. As they were big, more muscular, and I was definitely pear shaped. Thats when I was a size 12 so yes you could be small with thunder thighs if they aren't in proportion but you dont sound the way you've described yourself that your thighs are much bigger than the rest of you...

Youcunnyfunt · 31/03/2021 17:37

This is amazing that thunder thighs are a compliment now Grin

If only I could go back a decade or two and shove it in everyone's faces who said it to me Grin

OP, sounds like it was meant as a compliment so I'd take it that way! I had a colleague about 10 years ago who told me I had thunder thighs - on a dress down day I was wearing jeans and they quite tight on the thighs, this was before skinny jeans were properly a thing .
They were quite muscly back then, too, because I was training 16 - 20 hours every week on the climbing walls! I wanted to smack her in her stupid face. Instead, I said thank you! Grin Her face dropped, and I think a few others heard her stupid bitchy comment. I never complimented her clothes after that, either.

Floraflower3 · 31/03/2021 17:40

@withlotsoflove

It’s a modern aesthetic. Like others have said - from gym : insta style influencers! It’s interesting to me, as it was never a look anyone aimed for previously. I have very defined thighs : butt : naturally- l’ve decided to make them more so now! Grin
You look incredible! I have a big bum and thighs but they’re not shapely like yours Angry
Caiti19 · 31/03/2021 17:41

This sounds to me like the colleague doesn't understand the meaning of "thunder thighs" - like she's just using the term incorrectly. Heard it somewhere and picked it up wrong that it's a compliment you give to someone.

Rupertbeartrousers · 31/03/2021 17:41

So the awful “thigh gap” phase is officially over then? (no disrespect to lovely long-limbed ladies who have one but it’s a worry when young people try to diet themselves into an impossible physique - like that awful a4 paper waist thing)

fizbosshoes · 31/03/2021 17:42

Wow chunky thighs are fashionable? Who knew?
I've always hated mine. I run several times a week which doesnt appear to help. When I gave up running when I was pregnant , my thighs were noticeably thinner.

ThePearSquare · 31/03/2021 17:44

She was definitely saying it nicely!
A younger girl at work said she wished she had my figure when I was moaning how my work clothes made me look like a sack of spuds, I was like Christ, I was just ahead of my time Grin I have wide hips, strong legs, a big bum and boobs but a small waist. We’re finally a cool shape! Hahaha

do you even know what the term means these days? Sounds like you don't understand the meaning!
FourTurnings · 31/03/2021 17:47

I am now confused as I thought (like a PP) that the thigh gap was in fashion.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 31/03/2021 17:47

In the context it was said in and it being by a young woman, I am sure it was meant as a compliment. The Kardashian look (if I can term it that) is fashionable.

In other contexts it would be an insult I am sure.
