So, I was joking at work that if I drank less wine, I'd be at least a stone lighter. This young girl I work with who is lovely and I like said something like 'oh no, you have a great figure, I want to put weight on , you've got thunder thighs ' Grin She's probably a size 10, I wear size 12 jeans , say from Next where the sizes are bigger and probably a 14 in coats or tops from shops like Dorothy Perkins as I have big boobs and a bit of a podgy belly .

I know she wasn't being horrible but I thought 'thunder thighs' were on bigger ladies ? I suppose they are quite big but not out of proportion at all. What do you think?

There's enough muscle there to look strong but not big enough to be what used to be called thunder thighs though.

You have lovely legs.

hugocat · 10/12/2020 15:41

Thanks guys. Oops how do I delete the picture?? !!!!

I have thunder thighs and I love them! I’d take it as a compliment

After seeing your picture, you most definitely do not have thunder thighs

You can report it and ask MNHQ to delete for you.
AfterSchoolWorry · 10/12/2020 15:48

Oh to have been born 30 years later!

I would have been a bombshell with my small waist, big arse and chunky legs 🥺

Chimeraforce · 10/12/2020 15:49

If you want thinner thighs you know what to do.
As the owner and acceptor of big thighs I'm grateful that they work. Smile

megletthesecond · 10/12/2020 15:51

I manage to be underweight and have huge thighs.
No one else was in the queue the day mine were handed out. Great for running and martial arts. Nightmare for buying jeans and trousers.

MoltenLasagne · 10/12/2020 15:51

She definitely meant it as a compliment. Some lovely but very frank Nigerian women I worked with 10 years ago used to tell me I had lovely big thighs but small breasts! Grin I was quite upset and not particularly convinced by their assertion this was a good thing but apparently its now in fashion here too.

PoppyOppy · 10/12/2020 15:58
**@PoppyOppy* no, thunder thighs was* an insult, but given that a lot of young women want thicker, muscular thighs nowadays it might not be intended as one.

If a man my age (mid-thirties) called me thunder thighs I'd take it as an insult because it would likely be intended as one, as he would have grown up when I did and known it was a fairly common way to insult larger girls. Not necessarily the same coming from somebody younger.
True, I'm even older than you (mid-50s) but do see it as an insult still, but a younger person may not see it that way. Smile

Such a healthy change where youngsters want to be bigger - healthily - when I was at school everyone seemed to want to be so skinny they’d be in danger of sliding down the plughole if they had a shower!

nosswith · 10/12/2020 15:59

@RumpoleoftheBaileys all you need is for your OH to want to have his head crushed!

blubberball · 10/12/2020 16:01

My thighs are finally in fashion!

withlotsoflove · 10/12/2020 16:02

It’s a modern aesthetic. Like others have said - from gym : insta style influencers!
It’s interesting to me, as it was never a look anyone aimed for previously.
I have very defined thighs : butt : naturally- l’ve decided to make them more so now! Grin

JillofTrades · 10/12/2020 16:03

I don't think her intention was to be horrible. She complimented you about your figure but she should learn that you shouldn't comment on someone's appearance. Anyway the word 'thunder' itself doesn't sound nice to describe someone. I would tell her nicely that you felt a bit upset.

Thenose · 10/12/2020 16:08

When I was a child in the 80s, the term 'thunder-thighs' had negative connotations. Not so these days; larger thighs are in vogue. I'm sure she intended to compliment you.

gongy · 10/12/2020 16:08

You don't have thunder thighs.

Beyoncé is a classic example, flat tum, curvy hips & bum & thicker thighs.

Why is she wearing Sainsbury’s uniform?!
MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 10/12/2020 16:15

Culture is relevant in my opinion OP. The African side of my family will very bluntly tell you you're fat but they're not intending to be unkind. I have aunts that have gleefully told extended family I'm their lovely fat niece 🤣
Your legs are lovely.

KnitFastDieWarm · 10/12/2020 16:23

She’s a) young and b) African - two demographics where a small waist, curvy bum and strong, voluptuous thighs is absolutely something to aspire to. Which is fortunate for me as I’ve been what the youth would call ‘thicc AF’ since about 1999 and am now finally in fashion these past few years Grin

Is english her second language? if so, she almost certainly doesn’t realise the connotation of that phrase to a native english speaker.

Also @hugocat, your thighs are positively dainty compared to, say, mine Grin
all legs are great legs, big, small whatever - screw trends.

HerselfIndoors · 10/12/2020 16:24

AfterSchoolWorry me too! Big thighs, big bum and small boobs, I'm finally a goddess!

We had a teacher who was nicknamed Thunderthighs and it wasn't meant in a nice way! But now I think about it, in itself it's not so bad, it does have connotations of strength and power, and maybe Thor.

oldshoeuk · 10/12/2020 16:25

Given her age she's what, 20 years or so off for using that as an insult? She meant it as she meant it.

I'm guessing that if you hit the gym and reached peak fitness then your thighs would look as they do today, so she meant it as a compliment.

I wish somebody thought my thighs of thunder came from a gym

realsunkissedtan · 10/12/2020 16:27

I'd call these thunder thighs.

realsunkissedtan · 10/12/2020 16:28

And these too.

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 10/12/2020 16:30

Am I a wierdo to think that 'legs like tree trunks' and 'thunder thighs' were compliments? Meant to mean I've got strong, study legs with a decent range of motion.

(looks at 100kg back squat)

realsunkissedtan · 10/12/2020 16:32

In a positive way, of course.
