So, I was joking at work that if I drank less wine, I'd be at least a stone lighter. This young girl I work with who is lovely and I like said something like 'oh no, you have a great figure, I want to put weight on , you've got thunder thighs ' Grin She's probably a size 10, I wear size 12 jeans , say from Next where the sizes are bigger and probably a 14 in coats or tops from shops like Dorothy Perkins as I have big boobs and a bit of a podgy belly .

I know she wasn't being horrible but I thought 'thunder thighs' were on bigger ladies ? I suppose they are quite big but not out of proportion at all. What do you think?

I think it's a misunderstanding of the term 'thunder thighs' which used to be an insult to imply undesirable fatness. Big muscly thighs are now a desirable trait so of course she wasn't trying to insult you.

LtJudyHopps · 10/12/2020 14:33

This reminds me of my Nan! She always goes on about how she’s always had skinny arms and she wishes she had a bit of meat on them. Then she grabs my arm and asks for a bit off mine.
Lovely Nan, cheers. She might think she’s being funny/nice/whatever but it doesn’t come across like that! She also does it to one of her friends who is always doing one diet or another!

wonkschops · 10/12/2020 14:34

I don't think she meant to insult, the phrase thunder thighs is a negative to older people but thick thighs are seen as desirable

wonkschops · 10/12/2020 14:35

I'm not offended but do you consider someone my size big enough to have 'thunder thighs'

I don't think size is relevant, it's shape.

Almostslimjim · 10/12/2020 14:36

I'm an inch taller than you and same weight. I definitely have thunder thighs.

Large thighs are in some cultures, desirable.

RickJames · 10/12/2020 14:36

It's a compliment! Albeit worded in a way that an older person might associate with insults of the past. Young'uns like big bums, big hips and thighs nowadays. It's also been a sign of attractiveness in the Afro/ Caribbean cultures for many years. The new insult is probably more along the lines of skinny legs/ flat bum. Hence the craze for bum implants or hours spent doing squats.

Signaturesoftheworkers · 10/12/2020 14:37

Are they? Cripes funny how things change!

wonkschops · 10/12/2020 14:39

hence the tread for filler/implants.

mollscroll · 10/12/2020 14:40

oh right. I've been carrying around the hurt that a group of boys called me thunder thighs 35 years ago. Little did I realise they meant it as a compliment Grin

FlossieTeacakesFurCoat18 · 10/12/2020 14:43

She definitely meant it as a compliment! She's a youngster, they have a whole other language 😆

Regularsizedrudy · 10/12/2020 15:05

I have heard young women use this term as a positive. It’s supposed to convey an idea of strength and power.

Tootsietootie · 10/12/2020 15:09

I'm your height and weight and I have thunder thighs or thighs of steel as I like to think of them Grin

GreekOddess · 10/12/2020 15:11

It's impossible to say whether you have thunder thighs as it's not possible to tell by dress size.

I'm late 40s and when I was a teenager big thighs and in particular a big bum was not considered desirable but these days that is the look that girls/young women aspire to. The look these days is very cartoonish with minuscule tiny waists and huge bottoms/legs.

RayOfSunshine2013 · 10/12/2020 15:12

I’m also a 12 when not pregnant, and definitely consider myself to have thunder thighs as a bigger person, but its not something id say to someone else, bit rude

realsunkissedtan · 10/12/2020 15:20

As an African, 'thunder thighs' and general "thicc-ness" are seen as beautiful although not necessarily called 'thunder thighs' where I'm from.
Somewhere in the middle of skinny and fat is the general ideal weight with proportional rounded bum, thighs and hips. Think what many people are now buying.

Judging by the context of what she said, I'd think she meant it as a compliment. Adding to that, she's African, she probably didn't realise the negative meaning.

Also, thunder thighs isn't exactly about weight but about the size of your thighs in proportion to the rest of your body. Someone who's skinny can have thunder thighs while someone who's fat may not have thunder thighs.

fatherliamdeliverance · 10/12/2020 15:23

Meant as a compliment from a young lass, most likely. Big thighs and backsides are big news these days, thank the lord. If I ever meet Kim Kardashian or Lizzo I will buy those women a drink. I used to get all sorts of stick for mine!

Obviously thunder thighs is not a scientific unit of measurement but I'm roughly your size (5'6" and a 12- 14, more of a 14) and my thighs have always been thunderous even when slim. I believe it's thanks to show jumping as a kid.

Gardeniaofdelights · 10/12/2020 15:23

I think she must be young and just not realise how insulting the term is! Nowadays having ‘thick thighs’ is a compliment so maybe she assumes the same is true of thunder thighs. It sounds from the context that she was trying to compliment you not insult you.

murbblurb · 10/12/2020 15:23

as the 'recently beaten up' look is popular among this generation due to lip fillers, I wouldn't be amazed at any of their standards of beauty.

file under 'a bit dippy' and talk about something other than appearance and weight. Size labels in shops are completely random, women are assumed to be no-lifes who are happy to spend hours trying on clothes. Hence we don't get the courtesy of measurements and have to guess.

Oblomov20 · 10/12/2020 15:29

I've always had thunder thighs even though I am very small and even when I was very slim.

hugocat · 10/12/2020 15:30

Pic if anyone is interested

CodenameVillanelle · 10/12/2020 15:32

You don't have big thighs Confused but you have very nice legs!

DiscombobulatedAf · 10/12/2020 15:32

Lol you do not have thunder thighs 😂

realsunkissedtan · 10/12/2020 15:33

That's not what I'd call 'thunder thighs' but I suppose it depends on the rest of the body.

changedmynameforChristmas · 10/12/2020 15:34

She meant that you have phat thighs which is a compliment OP

ChocolateCherrybomb · 10/12/2020 15:35

I recently heard a young chap going on about how he loved "thick women".

He meant well muscled and strong, it turned out when asked.

It used to mean fat or stupid, at varying times.
I think this may be a similar story of language use changing or meaning different things depending on age and/or cultural background.

I think she meant to compliment you.
