Been told I have ' thunder thighs '

So, I was joking at work that if I drank less wine, I'd be at least a stone lighter. This young girl I work with who is lovely and I like said something like 'oh no, you have a great figure, I want to put weight on , you've got thunder thighs ' Grin She's probably a size 10, I wear size 12 jeans , say from Next where the sizes are bigger and probably a 14 in coats or tops from shops like Dorothy Perkins as I have big boobs and a bit of a podgy belly .

I know she wasn't being horrible but I thought 'thunder thighs' were on bigger ladies ? I suppose they are quite big but not out of proportion at all. What do you think?

OP posts:
HoneyWheeler · 10/12/2020 16:34

Well my husband said I had legs like a doner kebab so I think thunder thighs is an improvement on that! 😂 absolute git he is

Oooohbehave · 10/12/2020 16:37

Big bum and thighs are 'in' right now, she meant it as a compliment. Women can't win can we? There's always some beauty ideal to aspire to.

Whatthebloodyell · 10/12/2020 16:38

She clearly meant it to be complimentary so I you should take it that way. But yes, it doesn’t surprise me that you have ‘thunder thighs’ as you are the same height as me but stone heavier. And my thigh gap days are a long way behind me.

hellhavenofury · 10/12/2020 16:38

I am a size 8-10 and I would say I have 'Thunder Thighs' - Which I am very happy about, they look great in skinny jeans. I certainly wouldn't take it as an insult :D

LastChristmas20 · 10/12/2020 16:39

I adore Beyoncé. And I'm assuming it's an American sports team colours.

But was anyone else's first reaction to that photo that she was in a Sainsbury's uniform? Grin

YoniAndGuy · 10/12/2020 16:42

Yes but the conversation makes it clear that she meant to compliment you.

TheMarzipanDildo · 10/12/2020 16:42

I think ‘thunder thighs’ are v sexy. I want some!

It’s another silly beauty standard of course but still

realsunkissedtan · 10/12/2020 16:42

Apparently, Beyonce was trolled by Sainsbury's for that outfit, as the internet says.

She's also someone people have mentioned as the proud owner of thunder thighs.

sexyomelette · 10/12/2020 16:45

Sounds like it was meant as a compliment, Op. All these women in the pics are beautiful with their thundery thighs.

formerbabe · 10/12/2020 16:45

In some cultures, that wouldn't be offensive...a Jamaican girl once said to my sister...' you got fat' it was a compliment! Not all cultures aspire to skinniness or see it as the ultimate in beauty.

realsunkissedtan · 10/12/2020 16:46

Think this was one of the pics after Beyonce's clothing line photos were posted.

Been told I have ' thunder thighs '
DuzzyFuck · 10/12/2020 16:47

A clumsy compliment I think OP. Back when I used to run regularly I loved having bigger / muscly thighs more than a flatter stomach or anything else.

ClaireP20 · 10/12/2020 16:50

Trust me OP, i have a 17 year old. They mean it as compliment. It doesn't mean you're fat, like it used to, it means you're curvy and sexy. So annoying isn't it...the years i've spent trying to get rid of mine...xx

peaceanddove · 10/12/2020 16:53

I have teenage daughters. The vogue now is for a toned, small breasted torso, small waist, rounded bum and rounded thighs.

mumofthemonsters808 · 10/12/2020 16:56

Take it as a compliment my 18 year old aspires to have thunder thighs and a big butt, she’s weightlifting at the gym to try and achieve it.She tells me it’s the shape her and her friends love.

notalwaysalondoner · 10/12/2020 16:57

I’m so freaking lucky the fashion is now for small boobs, small waist, massive arse and thighs as this has been my natural figure aged 25-35. And when the super skinny look was in ten years ago I was 15-25 and super skinny. Hopefully the next fashion will be for rounded mum tums which is what I’m sure is coming for my next decade...

HallFloor · 10/12/2020 16:59

Young people's idea of what's attractive has changed. We were all "does my bum look big in this?" And now they have implants to make it bigger.

From the context she clearly thinks big tights are desirable.

Graciebobcat · 10/12/2020 17:00

I've always had thunder thighs and muscly calves, even when I was slightly underweight. I lost so much weight because I wanted gazelle-like legs - it doesn't work if you don't have that build.

I'm glad they are now acceptable to fashion but I've been comfortable with my legs for years now.

Piglet89 · 10/12/2020 17:05

@hugocat

Because she's so young, maybe she doesn't realise that term used to be an insult

99% sure this is what it is!

realsunkissedtan · 10/12/2020 17:06

'Fat' is a neutral word in my culture. It's only a descriptor and how you use it is what determines if your intention is negative or positive. People (both male and female) want to add some weight/'put some meat on their bones' (lol) if they're seen as too slim or skinny. We have a bit in common with Greeks in trying to fatten people up with food (just not too fat/obese - that would get you encouraged to lose weight).

For some reason, we rarely have what we'd call 'obese' people. At least I never saw one till I left the country.

Gretnacastle · 10/12/2020 17:09

Thunder thighs, coming from a younger person is a compliment.

From someone 50 plus it’s nasty.

IME anyway. All the young women I know want toned and large “thunder thighs”

Older generation see “thunder thighs” as big wobbly unattractive things that wobble and slap together when you walk.

She was being nice

MiddlesexGirl · 10/12/2020 17:10

I have thunder thighs and I'm a couple of stone lighter than OP.
Sounds like I'm right on trend now though.... how gratifying 😂

Piglet89 · 10/12/2020 17:10

I also think she has heard the term and (not unreasonably) interpreted the noun “thunder” in this context to mean “strong” which apparently is the whole rage now; toned and muscular.

She meant to flatter you!

BogRollBOGOF · 10/12/2020 17:12

My thunder thighs can power me through a half marathon Grin
I didn't appreciate my bust being called "ironing board" at school though.

I'm generally fine with being a pear shape although I'd love it if my jeans stayed up within inches of my waist after I've bought them to fit my thighs and hips.
