To think this is really cheeky?

Ordered a takeaway this evening as I'm home late from work. Delivery driver turns up and the bill was £36.50, I hand her £40 and she's asks "do you want the change?" I was a bit stunned and felt like a bit of an idiot when I said yes please. Dd said that is really cheeky and I should call the takeaway to complain what do you all think?

A little cheeky maybe yes, but not something that I would complain about.

OverTheRainbow88 · 08/12/2020 18:10

I wouldn’t take the change, always tip the driver

Batshittery · 08/12/2020 18:11

It is cheeky but I don't know if I'd bother ringing to complain tbh.

Meraas · 08/12/2020 18:11

No, not cheeky. It's only £3.50, not like you gave her a £50! And she asked, she didn't turn around and walk off!

Also, I think YABU to expect delivery driver to carry change, we always pay by card if we don't have exact money (plus tip).

SebastianTheCrab · 08/12/2020 18:12

Completely OTT to call and complain.

Did you tip her anything?

PuffyChuff · 08/12/2020 18:12

It's cheeky but I'd let it go

Disfordarkchocolate · 08/12/2020 18:13

Not cheeky at all. Lots of people don't want change, especially at the moment. It seems like an OK tip but not generous.

Aprilx · 08/12/2020 18:13

I would have told her to keep the change as £3.50 tip on a £36.50 order is reasonable. However as you didn’t, I think she should have just given you the change and not asked.

CherryPavlova · 08/12/2020 18:13

Cheeky of you not to tip

Marmite27 · 08/12/2020 18:14

I’d complain! A tip shouldn’t be expected.

We never tip, we pay enough as a delivery charge!

Hahaha88 · 08/12/2020 18:15

Complain? Really? Hmm

Monsterjam · 08/12/2020 18:15

Agree with others, no need to complain at all.

FromEden · 08/12/2020 18:15

Not cheeky. You should give a tip, even if you paid a delivery fee as this generally doesn't go to the drivers

tallduckandhandsome · 08/12/2020 18:15

I always tip too. They're on minimum wage and I can afford 10%.

AndcalloffChristmas · 08/12/2020 18:16

For god sake don’t complain. Ok maybe don’t give a tip if you don’t want, but don’t make her life worse by complaining!

PeskyRooks · 08/12/2020 18:16

I always round up takeaways if I'm paying cash.
I wouldn't dream of phoning the takeaway to complain! Doubt they would give a monkey's to be honest!

jambeforeclottedcream · 08/12/2020 18:18

Yabu sort of. cheeky of the delivery driver to word the sentence like that as it angling for a tip.

But in a situation like that I'd be saying keep the change anyway in lieu of a tip

christmasmiserymary · 08/12/2020 18:19

@Meraas there's not option to pay by card here it's all cash on delivery's.

OP posts:
Janaih · 08/12/2020 18:19

Cheeky but I wouldn't complain about it.

RosePetalss · 08/12/2020 18:20

How old is your daughter? Intrigued that your daughter said complain, she sounds lovely Hmm

Anyway no you should not complain!

MindThatTree · 08/12/2020 18:20

Don’t you tip your delivery people????

christmasmiserymary · 08/12/2020 18:21

It's not about the money it's the fact that she asked. I normally just round it up anyway but the fact she asked seemed really cheeky. Never had that before.

@CherryPavlova

Cheeky of you not to tip
No it's not. If tipping was mandatory it should be included in the bill amount (like it is in the US).

It is up to the customer to decide whether they tip or not, and to pre-empt that is indeed cheeky. The driver probably finds that a lot of people wouldn't ask for the change out of embarrassment once asked. She probably makes a lot from it.

Nobody has to give more money than a service costs. It is entirely a personal decision.

Leaannb · 08/12/2020 18:22

I live in a tipping culture and that is incredibly grabby and poor customer service skills. Complain

DPotter · 08/12/2020 18:24

Not as cheeky as some...

Years ago - 20yrs +- had lunch in a well known pizza restaurant with work colleagues. Bill came to just over £80, so we left £100 on the saucer which was collected without a word by the waitress. And we sat there waiting for change. And we sat there. Eventually another waitress came over and asked us basically to move as they needed the table. We said we were waiting for change. Original waitress came back and said oh I thought you wanted me to keep the change - er no, we'd like our change please. She'd assumed we were happy to leave nearly £20 tip on £100 bill - she didn't get a penny
