To think this is really cheeky?

Ordered a takeaway this evening as I'm home late from work. Delivery driver turns up and the bill was £36.50, I hand her £40 and she's asks "do you want the change?" I was a bit stunned and felt like a bit of an idiot when I said yes please. Dd said that is really cheeky and I should call the takeaway to complain what do you all think?

There is always a delivery charge around here as well as the food cost.

Same here I think it's like £1.50 I live less than a mile from the Chinese it used to be free if you lived in the same town.

@MatildaTheCat I don't eat noodles-too rubbery Confused and not distressed just think it is rude to expect a tip.

Honestly if you complain you will be a laughing stock.

With who?

MiddleClassProblem · 08/12/2020 23:49

How did she know? Is she psychic?

You could have given her £37 or £37.50 or £36.60 or the exact money etc

But if she anticipated you giving her just notes, that’s pretty good service so maybe it was COVID related.

And if you intend for her to keep the change (repeating myself) why wouldn’t you just say it when handing the cash over? Do you just want it to go back and forth?

Regardless, it’s such a small thing to be arse to call and complain about and you don’t seem to be acknowledging that. You just sound like someone who is highly strung and someone who likes to complain.

ZenNudist · 09/12/2020 00:01

Not cheeky, reasonable question. I dont tip but if she said that to me id say oh no thanks as its Christmas and I'm feeling generous.

christmasmiserymary · 09/12/2020 00:01

@MiddleClassProblem I'm the total opposite of how you have judged me, I never complain. And how she knew what I was going to give her is they ask when you order so that they can give her the exact change instead of fumbling in the dark.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 09/12/2020 00:03

I think it's cheeky. Maybe hoping that someone too meek/nice would feel embarrassed into saying no, keep the change. That's not cool.

shamalidacdak · 09/12/2020 00:06

Not cheeky at all I always tip a fiver and tenner for groceries

innercitysumo · 09/12/2020 00:07

@StillCoughingandLaughing

Honestly if you complain you will be a laughing stock.

With who?

Everyone who works there- who else?? They will be used to complaints about food, not a question about bloody change.
emilyfrost · 09/12/2020 00:07

How did she know? Is she psychic?

MiddleClassProblem It’s rude of her to ask, because it means she expects to keep the change. She should wait and see if it’s offered.

Staffy1 · 09/12/2020 00:13

Don't complain, it was a reasonable enough question.

Wife2b · 09/12/2020 00:32

Very cheeky and presumptuous.

Wife2b · 09/12/2020 00:34

Those of you saying it’s not cheeky. Would you say the same thing to a cashier in a store if they asked?

StillCoughingandLaughing · 09/12/2020 00:36

Everyone who works there- who else??

So is the OP expected to be devastated if a couple of people who work at a Chinese takeaway roll their eyes behind her back? It’s hardly being plastered across the tabloids.

Kokeshi123 · 09/12/2020 00:51

This makes me glad I live in a 100% NO tipping culture. Tipping is not a thing here.

When tips are not a thing, the market adjusts and wages for service people get pushed up, so people get paid better in the first place. Tipping just pushes wages down, long-term, and increases inequality among workers (good looking people get more tips, for example). It's a condescending and embarrassing hangover from the days of "servants" and makes people angle and drop hints and behave like performing dolphins merely in order to get paid. Tipping is also a headache and causes unnecessary stress.

ButtonMoonLoon · 09/12/2020 00:57

I don’t tip.
I’ve paid for the delivery (£2-3 round here) so I don’t feel I should be paying any more than that.

Pipandmum · 09/12/2020 00:59

I normally tip but since March the takeout places only accept card payment when you order and the driver leaves it on the doorstep.
But I think its perfectly normal for the person to ask if you want change, though I would have said 'keep it' when handing the money over in the first place.
Certainly not worth complaining about.

Mamanyt · 09/12/2020 01:27

Cheeky to ask, a little, but more than cheeky of you not to tip. Delivery charges go to the company, not the driver, and they are paid a bare minimum. On slow nights and with cheap customers, sometimes tips don't even cover petrol costs. I always tip at least 10%. I have delivered food for a living when I was much younger, and I know how critical those tips are to a bottom line.

Didkdt · 09/12/2020 01:47

Why on earth are you dealing in cash in the time of the Covid why are they letting you

jessstan1 · 09/12/2020 02:04

If you order from Deliveroo you can add a 'rider tip' at checkout.

JustEat don't do that so if I order from them I leave tip in an envelope on the doorstep.

I don't know any where you pay for the meal in cash at this time - did before the pandemic.

jessstan1 · 09/12/2020 02:07

@ButtonMoonLoon

I don’t tip. I’ve paid for the delivery (£2-3 round here) so I don’t feel I should be paying any more than that.
The delivery person doesn't get the £2-3 though. That's for the restaurant who have to pack up the food and employ the driver. It's good to give a tip to the driver, they are out in all weathers and don't earn much.

Many places don't charge for delivery if you spend a certain amount on your order, usually £15.

Figgyboa · 09/12/2020 03:21

100% not cheeky and why would you complain, she did nothing wrong! I would have told her to keep the change. YABU

VulvaPerson · 09/12/2020 03:26

@BanditoShipman

I had no idea people tip delivery drivers! We always tip taxis, restaurants, hairdressers etc but have never done this. We usually pay by card so they just hand over food at door, are we supposed to tip? There is always a delivery charge around here as well as the food cost.
Same here. This thread is the first I have heard of delivery drivers getting tips. And it seems the huge majority posting DO tip. The drivers that do here must think we are stingy as fuck but its not really something I have ever thought of Blush
VulvaPerson · 09/12/2020 03:32

On slow nights and with cheap customers, sometimes tips don't even cover petrol costs.

Thats shit, I always assumed that petrol costs are covered. Not quite the same thing, but when I worked for a taxi company some years back, they got petrol reimbursed. So again, just assumed that driving jobs worked like that Blush Education tonight/this morning.

Sinful8 · 09/12/2020 03:34

Has anyone pointed out that she may have just been asking because covid and people maybe isolating and not wanting to handle mucky change?
Grin

I wouldn't complain though op but that's only because I don't like my take away tasting of genitals
