Christmas Day clothes

This is 1st Christmas with me and DP staying at home, so I suggested we could get pyjamas & chill, but DP wasn't keen on my idea.... which made me wonder - if you stay at home on Christmas Day, do you put on nice clothes and dress up, or stay in PJs?

Yabu= dress up
yanbu= pyjamas

I'm going to enjoy dressing up a bit!

BogRollBOGOF · 05/12/2020 12:34

I dress up if we go and visit family.
Something like jeans and Christmas jumper if we stay at home. We go to church in the morning (not this year) and go for a walk at some point.
I wouldn't feel festive cooking Christmas dinner in my pjs.

didireallysaythat · 05/12/2020 13:34

No dressing up here. Can't see the attraction of buying something to wear on Xmas day for just one day, and then feeling like I have to wear the same thing every year. Although I guess you could put it away with the Xmas decorations so maybe it's not such a bad idea

VinylDetective · 05/12/2020 13:39

I couldn’t spend Christmas Day in my pyjamas. Just the thought depresses me. I’ll be dressed with my hair and make up done.

Glitterblue · 05/12/2020 13:43

I always shower and get dressed into jeans and a hoodie, we usually host so I change into a nicer top and cardi or something before everyone arrives but nothing fancy by any means. This year we're not having anyone so I'll probably just stay in my jeans and hoodie but I will definitely get dressed and put some make up on.

I assumed that in the context of this thread, "dressing up" meant wearing something a bit more special than everyday clothes, not an elf suit.

I rarely even go downstairs in my pyjamas-only when I’m really ill!

I would always get dressed but just tend to wear jeans and a sparkly type top for Xmas day-nothing particularly dressy.

misskatamari · 05/12/2020 16:20

We don't get dressed up, but don't stay in pjs. Just nice comfy normal clothes. Usually do my makeup so I feel like I've made some effort, but we generally have a chilled cosy day

Theonewiththecandles · 05/12/2020 19:42

We are a house of pj dwellers to begin with. We will get up and shower and then put clean pjs on. It's just the two of us and the cat, why wouldn't I want to be comfy in my own home? I usually wear leggings and dresses anyway, I don't even own a single pair of jeans

Pegase · 05/12/2020 19:46

Nice clothes. Can't eat meals at the table in pyjamas. Can just about do breakfast but that's it. And I'd rather shower and dress before breakfast too tbh

Daphnise · 05/12/2020 19:48

Slobbing around in pyjamas on Xmas day is like going to the local shops in a dressing gown and slippers- some do it, but most don't!

AdoraBell · 05/12/2020 19:50

Pyjamas until presents open and we’ve had breakfast. Then I get dressed, usually a dress but not very fancy.

PurBal · 05/12/2020 19:51

Dress up! Bought a lovely new dress for this year.

DrCoconut · 05/12/2020 19:59

I always get dressed even if just into comfy clothes. My mental health benefits from being showered, changed etc. It's especially important at this time of year as the cold and lack of light really affects me.

Okaynow · 05/12/2020 20:00

We have our Christmas pjs on for the morning and we get dressed for Christmas lunch.

VestaTilley · 05/12/2020 20:02

Nice clothes and dress up- we go to church in the morning and stay in our best clothes all day.

Even if we weren’t churchgoers I could never stay in pyjamas all day- it wouldn’t feel right eating a Christmas lunch dressed in pyjamas and I’d feel like the day hadn’t started properly without getting dressed!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/12/2020 20:03

The daft thing is that, if someone said they were going to spend Christmas Day in yoga pants and a plain jersey top, no-one would bat an eyelid - but call almost identical garments pyjamas, and they become an unacceptable Christmas outfit.

NovemberR · 05/12/2020 20:05

Dressed in something smart but comfy as we tend to drag the Wii out and play 10 pin bowling and stuff like that. I want to feel Christmassy and special, but not uncomfortably smart.

Leggings and a sparkly top maybe. Something like that.

sbhydrogen · 05/12/2020 20:38

I treat myself to a new dress every year, and always have my hair and make up done. It's so much nicer when everyone makes an effort.

notacooldad · 05/12/2020 20:42

As we dint go visiting i normally wear casual clothes around the house until after our meal which we have at 1.00 o'clock and then change into walking gear as we go out across the moors for a couple of hours.

cluecu · 05/12/2020 20:48

I get dressed up to an extent for Christmas morning (sparkly skirt etc). I am then cooking so will then put on a tshirt instead of top and then later it's Pjs/tracksuit /whatever is comfy

Parker231 · 05/12/2020 20:48

For those querying the PJ’s wearers, we do shower and put on a clean pair. Comfort and being happy is the aim. I brush my hair but don’t wear make up at hone.

It’s the same tradition for the years when all the family flies in and stays for the week - I really look forward to being able to do that again next year. When we were in the Rockies one Christmas we wore ski gear all day and in Australia I wore my bikini for Christmas lunch.

It doesn’t have to be formal to be special and Christmasy.

Butteredtoast55 · 05/12/2020 20:58

Even if I didn't go to morning service at church, I would still find it hard to wear PJs all day. Cooking Christmas dinner in my PJs? No thanks. But definitely PJs by early evening, after a lovely bath then settled down for Christmas Day TV.

didireallysaythat · 05/12/2020 21:04

The new dress or sparkley top that it appears normal to buy every year - do you wear it during the year to get the cost per wear down to normal numbers? Or do you sell on eBay and buy another?
