Christmas Day clothes

This is 1st Christmas with me and DP staying at home, so I suggested we could get pyjamas & chill, but DP wasn't keen on my idea.... which made me wonder - if you stay at home on Christmas Day, do you put on nice clothes and dress up, or stay in PJs?

Yabu= dress up
yanbu= pyjamas

I don't understand this fetishisation of PJ wearing. Cooking in your PJs? They aren't even very warm, on their own. Have breakfast and champagne in bed in your PJs, or maybe get changed after dinner to watch a film under a blanket, but what's the big deal with keeping your nightclothes on to eat a nice dinner, zoom friends and family etc?

Wear something cheerful, comfortable and / or maybe that your DP finds sexy!

There is a wealth of possibilities in between pyjamas and 'dressing up'.

Bonsai49 · 04/12/2020 16:54

Jeans and nice Christmas themed jumper when the kids were old enough to care , now they don’t care , whatever I like

ShrikeAttack · 04/12/2020 16:55

Neither DH nor I own pyjamas, so we'd be sitting in the nip. Not sure the teen DCs would be into that!

I couldn't imagine sitting down to dinner in anything resembling pyjamas though, I like to get dressed up on Christmas day, particularly this year as there will be precious few opportunities for glam this December.

SilenceOfThePrams · 04/12/2020 16:56

Sunday best, traditionally a new outfit for the children but always on the smarter end of comfortable. Wouldn’t feel right wearing PJs to church although one of the vicars comes in a onesie some years.

AliceMadHatter · 04/12/2020 16:56

There is a difference between waking up in Mickey Mouse pj's, keeping them on all day with a quick wash and brush of hair - not that attractive. Or, having a shower, washing hair, maybe putting a bit of natural make up on and a nice classy pair of PC's could be attractive if it's just the two of you.

AliceMadHatter · 04/12/2020 16:57

I will be getting dressed up though as leaving the house.

AryaStarkWolf · 04/12/2020 16:57

@Iminaglasscaseofemotion

I wouldn't stay in pjs, many because they consist of hot pant shorts and a vest top. Cant sleep in anything else, but I wouldn't be getting dressed properly.
I have separate PJ's for sleeping and for lounging, I couldn't sleep on long sleeved/legged PJ's either
Topseyt · 04/12/2020 16:58

I just can’t wear pjs all day. I like to feel that the day at least began so I get dressed.

None of us are particularly into dressing up here so it will be jeans, t-shirts and jumpers. Nice ones as we go out to a local restaurant for Christmas Dinner.

SleepingStandingUp · 04/12/2020 16:59

The 1 yo twins and 5 yo will be in matching shorts because I can hahahah and jeans / trousers. DH will wear what he always wears. I will go somewhere between dressed up and running around after. 3 kids bad cooking dinner. Not sure about Mil. The shirts have reindeers on but they'll wear them til they don't fit

LegoPandemic · 04/12/2020 16:59

Normally get dressed up- make up, comfy dress and tights as we’re always here but usually have guests.
This year we’re walking round to my parents patio to drink fizz under a patio heater so jeans and a Christmas jumper and then into comfy clothes once we get home.

Russellbrandshair · 04/12/2020 16:59

I do both. Eg- I always have my hair done, shower and put makeup on (have always done this even when not going out anywhere), then I put fresh PJs on - bliss! You look great but are also comfy- best of both worlds.

DinosaurGrrrrr · 04/12/2020 17:00

I usually put a Christmas dress on, one with a chrismassy pattern, so not dressed up exactly, we all wear something chrismassy jumpers/dresses. I wouldn’t stay in pjs though even if I was just sat at home with my husband and kids, I’d feel like a slob sat eating a fancy dinner in pjs (and I love wearing pjs!).

GameSetMatch · 04/12/2020 17:03

I certainly don’t stay in my PJs all day but I don’t get dressed up either. I just wear normal everyday clothes such as a dress and leggings or jumper and jeans.

MotherofTerriers · 04/12/2020 17:08

I always plan to dress up on Christmas day and waft around in a lovely dress. Then I remember that I am the world's messiest cook and will splash oil/gravy all over myself, put old clothes on and aim to change after cooking, but never get round to it

HammeringBird · 04/12/2020 17:13

STBXH and his family always dress up. STBXH can be a bit particular about appearance and I always used to worry about my outfit. The kids would also often end up stressed about whether they were wearing the 'right' thing.

Last year was our first Christmas since separating and I told the kids they could wear whatever they liked on Christmas Day. DD had a stinking cold and stayed in her PJs all day. DS put on his favourite jumper, and I wore something sparkly. I plan on having the same non-rule this year.

So, PJs for you and dinner jacket for your DH? PJs until midday and full glam in the afternoon? PJ bottoms and smart on top? Change outfits every hour depending on your mood?

LightasaBreeze · 04/12/2020 17:17

Just normal clothes, not particularly dressed up, if we were visiting other people though I would get dressed up.

Dionysus78 · 04/12/2020 17:18

I normally wear comfy but respectable clothes, e.g. leggings rather than sweat pants. This year I bought my 6 year old and me matching dresses to annoy my brother and mother, who will find them ridiculous and tasteless.

Audreyseyebrows · 04/12/2020 17:21

When at home I dress up but this year I’ll be in scrubs. Very chic.

NuniaBeeswax · 04/12/2020 17:21

Don't understand getting all dressed up just to sit around the house.

MrsJonesAndMe · 04/12/2020 17:22

Neither dressed up nor PJs, but probably just some normal clothes - maybe a christmassy jumper.

MagicSummer · 04/12/2020 17:23

At home, we always dressed up for Christmas Day - it just felt really nice! I could not spend the day in pyjamas - as a previous poster said, I don't own one pair of pyjamas! Would probably change into jogging bottoms and a sweatshirt in the evening once visitors had gone - not that that is happening this year!

GetOffYourHighHorse · 04/12/2020 17:25

Clothes, maybe even Christmas jumpers! I'm all for getting them on early by the time Call the Midwife is on but no, we won't be festering in pjs al day. It's Christmas! Surely you can rustle up a bit of energy to get dressed.

But I don't want to!
MiscellaneousMinutiae · 04/12/2020 17:28

I like to be comfortable - yoga pants and a Christmas sweatshirt.

Vicliz24 · 04/12/2020 17:31

Joggers and a Christmas jumper. Up and out with the dogs then home all day on our own . I work in retail so no way am I not being comfy all day . Hair and face done though
