Christmas Day clothes

This is 1st Christmas with me and DP staying at home, so I suggested we could get pyjamas & chill, but DP wasn't keen on my idea.... which made me wonder - if you stay at home on Christmas Day, do you put on nice clothes and dress up, or stay in PJs?

Yabu= dress up
yanbu= pyjamas

Jeans (as usual) and a nice top or jumper that won’t be ruined, when as chief cook I inevitably splash hot fat or gravy on it. (An apron might be useful if I had one.)

We’ve never done pyjamas in this house, it’d be a bit difficult when dh never wears them anyway, and might give locals a bit of a turn when we go for a walk around one-ish - we have dinner at around 5.

Ringading7 · 04/12/2020 16:26

I'm going to be going all out!! Hair, make up, jewels, glam dress!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/12/2020 16:26

I voted YABU because I can’t imagine staying in my nightwear all day - especially not for Christmas Dinner.

But I don’t really dress up - I wear something I enjoy wearing - not really dressy or posh, but comfortable and smart-casual (more casual than smart).

Leaannb · 04/12/2020 16:26

T shirts and shorts most of the time or scrub pants and tank top.. Kids wear shorts except for daughter and she is full on fancy dress. So normal

Parker231 · 04/12/2020 16:27

When we say we wear PJ’s all day - they are clean and not worn the night before. They’re great for relaxing in and makes our day special especially when DMil buys all 16 of us funny slippers!

Floridana · 04/12/2020 16:27

I was talking about this with a friend earlier. When we were young we always had a 'Christmas Day outfit' which was a nice dress and tights which we wore all day while seeing family and eating dinner etc. Nowadays it seems to have gone in the other direction and the fashion is to wear Christmassy themed pyjamas all day! I don't dress up like I used to but never spend all day in pyjamas either because I would feel slovenly.

ClaireP20 · 04/12/2020 16:27

Usualy i get dressed up a bit - but this year is just us at home...they are all getting matching pjs..they just don't know it yet xx

maverickallthetime · 04/12/2020 16:28

I love a pj day!
I'm not sure this year. We usually have a house full but we're putting celebrations on hold and my dh is working so it's just me and the children. I like the idea of new pjs to wear. I would usually wear jeans and a nice jumper or a skirt with thick tights but that'll just be weird this year!

justasking111 · 04/12/2020 16:29

Dress up make up perfume, sadly with all the cooking and me being clumsy have to wear an all encompassing apron until dinner has been served Blush

IndiaMay · 04/12/2020 16:30

"Dress up" I dont wear heels inside but it will be a nice dress, tights, make up, hair done and jewellery. Maybe if it was just me and DP we would wear our comfys. Like trackies and a festive jumper but out or with family we dress up. I've always had big xmasses though

Simplyunacceptable · 04/12/2020 16:31

I couldn’t sit down at the dining table to eat dinner in my pyjamas, it just isn’t right...

Simplyunacceptable · 04/12/2020 16:31

Oh and I don’t dress up as if I’m going on a night out because that would be weird too but I do get dressed.

BiddyPop · 04/12/2020 16:32

We usually go out for a period - mass and a couple of visits to extended family living near us - if we stay at home for Christmas. So I will wear a nice outfit, but not necessarily something new. It's a bit formal, not leggings and a jumper, but either a nice woollen dress or trousers and nice top type of thing - comfortable, looks nice, slightly formal but not covered in sequins or black tie ball levels of formality/bling.

When we get home, we get stuck into cooking and relaxing. Sometimes I change if my outfit is on the more formal end of the wardrobe to something that is less problematic if it gets splashed, but often I just take off my heels and put on my slippers as the limits of my changing.

Trauchled · 04/12/2020 16:33

I’ve always dressed smartly for Christmas Day ever since I was very young.PJs are for wearing in bed to sleep.
Even when I’ve been in hospital I’ve never stayed in my PJs all day.
I know lots of people love PJ days but it’s not for me.
DH would never wear his PJs all day either.

Madzhouse · 04/12/2020 16:36

PJs no question. Although tbf like previous posters they wouldn't be ones I've slept in and I would have had a wash and pulled on a clean pair.

Anotherdayanothernewname · 04/12/2020 16:36

Normally the old fail safe jeans and a nice top. We're staying at home this year, 1st Christmas at home, so undecided.

We'll probably get dressed but just standard clothes. And we never wear shoes in the house (not a rule, just what we do) so can't imagine being dressed up then wearing my fluffy bunny slippers 😂

hiptobeasquare · 04/12/2020 16:36

Depends on how I’m feeling on the day. I used to be a retail manager and Christmas Day was the only day off I had so I would wear new pyjamas all day as I was exhausted.
Now we have two your children sometimes I get dressed, sometimes I don’t.

rooarsome · 04/12/2020 16:37

We dress up for church then just wear ordinary clothes for the rest of the day. I'd feel a right prat all dressed up to go for a walk and then watch telly

HeretoThereandBackAgain · 04/12/2020 16:38

Smart but comfortable during the day, so jeans and a festive top or jumper. Fully dressed up for dinner.

I’m not averse to Christmas pyjamas but only for sleeping, certainly not for sitting around the house. But then, I am the kind of person who won’t put the bins out before I’m dressed.

Movinghouseatlast · 04/12/2020 16:39

I too could never sit at a table and eat a meal in night clothes. It would feel like being in hospital!

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 04/12/2020 16:39

@Ponoka7

happymummy12345, what do you wear when you first get out of bed etc?
I don't wear PJs either, I put my dressing gown on when I get up.
diddl · 04/12/2020 16:41

@Whyistheteacold

Me, my DP and DS travel over to mum's and change into pyjamas when we get there! I can't imagine having to wear tight jeans while trying to stuff my Christmas dinner 😂
Why would you "have to" wear tight jeans?

Is that all you have other than pjs?

rosie39forever · 04/12/2020 16:41

We normally have a house full so I make an effort, dress, hair done nice shoes but this year it's just the three of us so will be comfy trousers and jumper but will make an effort with hair and make up.... pjs for lunch would just feel wrong imho.

Camomila · 04/12/2020 16:42

We all get dressed - either jeans and a nice jumper/Christmas jumper or a dress.

I wouldn't like to have a roast dinner in PJs.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 04/12/2020 16:43

Pyjamas Grin one particular year we even wore matching ones. In some years we got changed throughout the day for various reasons like wear a gifted item of clothings or going out or whatever. But we have no issues starting the day in pyjamas and finishing it like that either.
