Anyone watching The Crown and despising them for their behaviour to Diana?

Obviously it's not a documentary, but enough truth to reinforce what a poor, poor woman she was and how she never had a chance.

I certainly agree it shows charmes as a massive hypocrite and its not painting the queen in a great light. But actually I don't think it is painting Diana in a great light either.

How are you deciding which parts are truth and which fiction?

Screenwriters are trying to evoke an emotional response from you. That doesn't make the portrayals accurate!

Diana wasn't perfect. People seem to hold her in some high regard, as though she wasn't manipulative or a bad mother at times.

It’s not real. Even Diana herself said how supportive the Queen was, I think they have been grossly unfair depicting her like that for a ‘storyline.’
Diana suffered don’t get me wrong. But she wasn’t an angel. But on the other they’re showing her as a weirdo, a mentally ill, dependant, naive thick, childish embarrassment as well.
The whole thing is bollocks. How on earth Harry can willingly get in to a company that treats his family like this is beyond me.

I haven't watched it yet, I'm just in series one and I'm annoyed with the behaviour towards Margaret and Peter

I've just finished the new season and none of them come out of it with any credit.

Apparently Harry told a reporter that he used to watch it but would get it stopped before it got to him.

Fat chance of that if it is true, since they have taken the Netflix deal.

He must really hate his family.

There is another excellent documentary on Netflix called ‘Diana, in her own words’. It’s told from her perspective.
Personally what I took from it was a woman who was deeply unprepared to be as revered as she was and a man who was jealous of that, but quite cool towards her. You could blame Charles upbringing for that I guess. Diana was also mentally quite unwell in a family who’s strap line seemed to be ‘carry on, keep smiling’.

Either way faults lay on both sides and had she not died she wouldn’t have been sainted. The crown that I’ve seen thus far (im on episode 8 I think) seems a little biased to me.

I think it is really bad taste on one hand to depict a family. Imagine all your family divorces, marriages fallouts made into a programme where viewings are better then truth? (and whose truth a dead person who has no say either way?)

I’m watching and trying to imagine how much is fact and how much fiction but I can really see most of that happening , the royals are a totally dysfunctional cold duty driven family , the antithesis of what Diana stood for . The poor poor woman , she never stood a chance.

It's a fictionalised account, featuring conversations that none of the writers could ever have been witness to. You're just seeing and feeling what the writers want you to see.

Quite OP. If a 32 year old man was hanging around my 19 year old daughter I would do my very best to discourage the relationship. Her family were remiss in encouraging it.

Completely agree OP. Of course she was t perfect, but it reminded me of the elements of that story that were verified as true, and she was definitely chewed up and spat out

This in spades. Everything we know about the royals is dubious. Even their own accounts in those interviews aren't necessarily the real truth - I imagine they both had their own agendas.

I've watched the whole new season and found it far less riveting than the others because the Charles/Diana story features so heavily and it's pretty boring now.

I have no love for the royals whatsoever but The Crown is fiction written by cowards, they are relying on the fact that the royals they depict won’t sue so they can run with whatever storyline they like. Entertaining but morally appalling as these are real people and these stories will get absorbed, regurgitated and for many will become the official narrative of their lives - all for a bit of evening fun on Netflix.

Actually I ended up thinking they were all as bad as each other.

Charles came out of it badly but by God Diana comes across as utterly vacuous and self absorbed. That anniversary present, good god!

Obviously they go to great lengths to show her ED and how lost she was but I did start to lose sympathy by the last two episodes when she was so MEMEME it really grated.

When the Queen called them out for being both entitled and whiny and ungrateful I was delighted. Even if it never actually happened, I was so sick of both of them that I was glad somebody was saying it!

Diana was just too young, and they had little in common. If the tabloids hadn't jumped on the story, she may have faded away.

Trouble was, Charles had really waited a bit too long to marry by that point. He needed to marry a girl without a "past" so most of his 30 something friends were out - and Camilla had turned him down. He need a wife, and she by all accounts set her cap at him by pretending to like shooting/country interests etc. Lets not forget the family pressures too - Earl Mountbatten was pushing his niece Charles's way, and she was even younger than Diana. It's not what you could call a close, well-functioning family!

I'm sure there was fault on both sides but even at the time (I was 11 during all the Lady Diana Spencer fever) I wondered why on earth her parents would let her do that. I can't imagine it was a secret what kind of marriage it would be.

They all came off horrifically in this series, ironically the only one they portrayed well was Margret but she was the biggest snob of the lot in real life. I do wonder if Harry & Meghan are interfering in some way to make them all look bad, what with their big Netflix deal

My take on it was that the monarchy is outdated - not good for the country and not good for the members of the royal family either. Time to move on!

Princess Margaret is being portrayed as having more emotional intelligence than the lot of them. I wonder how true that was!

Personally I think they're just portraying her as the teenager that she was at the time believing in fairy tales but thrown into a snake pit with a husband that didn't give a shit about her, I'm sure future seasons will portray her as more mature and self assured

Why on earth did she marry him? They hardly knew each other, she couldn't have been in love with him. Was it more the idea of marrying into the RF?
