Anyone watching The Crown and despising them for their behaviour to Diana?

Obviously it's not a documentary, but enough truth to reinforce what a poor, poor woman she was and how she never had a chance.

Charles appears a more mellow character these days - from the small amount we really know of him. However the general idea that he has the right to Lord it over us all just because he was born into that family has to be bad for anyone’s personal development as a child.

He was vile in the way he treated Diana. Bullied by his father then he went and bullied his wife.

I remember the earlier episodes about Philip and Charles at Gordonstoun as being good. I wouldn't mind rewatching. I loved the flashbacks to the Queen as a child. (Only see up the 4th episode of this series so don't know if there are any in this series

It's a great programme - as an older poster I can remember lots but OMG who'd want their family cruelly examined like this. We have a degree of alcoholism, a suicide, 3 divorces, plus some minor mental health problems just in the last couple of generations in my own relatively successful and relatively normal family, if you just pick out all the 'juicy bits'. And that without the weirdness of living in a global media spotlight.
It's cruel really. The series Succession was supposed to be based on Rupert Murdoch's dynasty, but at least it was only based on it.
The RF don't even get any royalties from it, they could have saved the tax payer a fair whack if they did.

Probably because they actually wanted to be able to broadcast their program without an army of lawyers descending upon them for repeating what amounts to completely unsubstantiated gossip about a man who, while long dead, still has living relatives. Even if there is any truth to the gossip, it's also likely that victims would still be alive.

It's one thing writing speculative fiction about the nature of relationships between two married people, or what exactly the monarch and their husband might have made of historical events, but quite another to speculate about an individual's alleged criminal behaviour. They'd never have got it past legal.

The Windsors are not just any family though, are they? They live out of the public purse and profess to be our betters. Some of the dramatisation is just untrue and unnecessary but on the whole it’s an excellent portrayal of them. If they don’t want the spotlight they know what they can do - preferably without the Netflix deal and the claim on the Crown Estate for millions.

I can't give you a source but I remember at the time report that at a formal dinner where Diana had eaten quite well he asked her, "Are we going to see all that come back later?"

As I said, it's only something I heard but if it's true it's a nasty thing to say, particularly at a table with other people.

Oh and I'm not a Diana fan.

I always think the worst thing about the Tampax Tapes , apart from the general ickness of them generally, is when Charles says in response to Camilla being self-deprecating "your greatest achievement is loving me".

Oh ....possibly ... I don't think he is an easy person tbh. I read it in a completely different way tbh! Can you imagine a woman saying that to a man?

I don't think any of it is believable to be honest. The writers were not present (obviously) at any of the private conversations, and when there is an episode about a well publicised incident, the facts are incorrect.
Margaret Thatcher's focus on her missing son during the Falklands build up for instance. Mark Thatcher was lost and found in January '82. The scrap metal merchants didn't arrive in the Falklands until late March '82.

I've read that Diana wasn't so lonely at the palace before the wedding. One of the ladies in waiting was a close family friend and her personal secretary was an older man to whom she was very close and who treated her like a daughter. I also remember at the time that the papers reported that she was living at Clarence House before the wedding not Buckingham Palace. Charles was away for five weeks on his Australian tour ( I don't know why the Crown has it as six weeks), but in The Crown it seems that he is away for almost all their engagement which was five months.

I thought the dialogue was very clumsy. It only served as propaganda prop.

I’m finding this series much more annoying than the earlier ones because I remember most of these events, and the show is so post-truthy. I don’t know why for example they have re-created the “whatever in love means” so inaccurately when we can see the original on youtube. They were both so much more confident than the show suggests, and Charles was much more pleasant about Diana in the rest of the interview.

Diana grew up partly at Sandringham - it’s not like she had never met the family and was suddenly dumped alone at the Palace for months. Also by various accounts including her own she was already very disturbed after a miserable childhood.

All the “I only love Camilla” stuff grates too. Camilla said that Charles chose not to propose before he went overseas on posting and she decided not to wait indefinitely for him. And what about poor old Kanga Tryon - if the accounts are true, he was shagging both of them before the wedding, and after Diana died she, poor thing, thought she still had a chance with him.

And he had proposed to Mountbatten’s granddaughter before Diana, but she had the good sense to turn him down.
