Chips with Chinese

Okay, so my favourite thread in a long time has vanished and it's left me with feelings of confusion and a yearning to know.........

Do chips belong anywhere in a Chinese takeaway?!

I think they do and would argue that they don't just belong - they MAKE a Chinese takeaway. Excuse me! Chips and curry sauce, how can these not be a part of your meal?! Duh!

YABU - Chips don't belong anywhere near my Chinese - What are you crazy?!

YANBU - OMG make mine a double portion and no going easy on that curry sauce!

@IHaveBrilloHair

Where I am in Scotland, the Indian takeaways also do kebabs, in fact I've never seen a stand alone kebab shop.
I’m from glasgow and used to go for a kebab every weekend in the centre after being out. I think it depends where you are.
BillyAndTheSillies · 20/11/2020 13:46

Never had chips from a Chinese. I don't think my local takeaway even does them.

IHaveBrilloHair · 20/11/2020 13:55

Bluntness, I'm down the Clyde, Helensburgh, not much choice here!

I know it well, my husband is ex navy and yup it’s location..
IHaveBrilloHair · 20/11/2020 13:59

My Daughter lives in Glasgow now, she says she misses the view, but not the lack of Uber and Deliveroo!

2020iscancelled · 20/11/2020 14:00

Chips with everything obviously

Not a huge Chinese takeaway fan, much prefer an Indian - which yes I have chips with.

I wouldn’t order chips in a Chinese / Indian restaurant though, seems it’s a purely takeaway requirement for me

AldiAisleofCrap · 20/11/2020 14:02

This chippy is about 4 miles from my house but well worth the drive. Sells Chinese, fish and chips , munch boxes etc .

Chips for not belong in a chinese

@WitchesSpelleas

Gravy is disgusting on anything. Never understand having nice crispy food like chips, roast potatoes etc and then pouring gravy over them to make them soggy.

There's no rule that says gravy has to go on crispy food. Try it with mashed potatoes instead.

I don't like the taste of gravy. Also good mashed potato should have a lot of butter in it so then gravy would spoil the taste.

I have never liked gravy. When I was young I always asked for no gravy on my roast dinner, sausage and mash or any other meal that people have gravy on.

DH is exactly the same! Definitely meant for each other.

Even seeing gravy on a meal makes me feel slightly sick. A lovely roast dinner with crispy potatoes, nice crisp yorkshires, lots of veg looks delicious and then gravy is poured over it and looks awful.

As I said, the only wet food we like is stew. All the rest of our families eat gravy and some have their meals swimming in it.

Ginfordinner · 20/11/2020 17:43

I don't like the taste of gravy.

You have clearly never tasted good gravy Grin

A roast without gravy made from the meat juices is dull - like a salad without dressing.

Even seeing gravy on a meal makes me feel slightly sick

That's a bit of an over reaction.

Dry food is less easy to eat for many people. You must have the saliva of a dog with sloppy chops. Although, I agree that gravy with chips is just wrong. It has to be mayonnaise.

Ginfordinner · 20/11/2020 17:46

I have never heard of munch boxes. None of the Chinese takeaways round here do them.

Where I live we have fish and chips chops, Chinese takeaways (only do Chinese food), Indian takeaways, and pizza/kebab takeaways. We don't have all-in-one takeaways Grin

I will order chips next time I have a Chinese, based on this thread. I hope I am not disappointed.

ILikeTrains · 20/11/2020 17:54

Woohoo, my order's in and were picking up in half an hour. You lot have inspired us to go feral, we've ordered a bunch of stuff that we've never tried before - can't wait to try Kung Po chicken. Chips and curry sauce still made the team though Grin

I love rice but it makes me really ill very quickly so I have chips. I miss rice but it isn't worth the pain.

nancybotwinbloom · 20/11/2020 19:24

What did you get @ILikeTrains

Puddlepop · 20/11/2020 21:02

@AldiAisleofCrap 😱😱 what on Earth is salt and pepper doner meat / pizza crunch?! I’m so curious and it sounds magical. Is it possible to overdo the salt & pepper in a munchy box where everything’s the same seasoning?

BarbaraofSeville · 20/11/2020 21:25

Salt is salt and pepper is the hottest chili known to man according to my one attempt at salt and pepper something I can't remember and couldn't eat.

I thought pepper was black pepper Blush

I am vegetarian but even when I ate meat I didn't like gravy made with meat juices.

Sorry if you think it's an over reaction but seeing a plate with lovely food covered in gravy does make me feel slightly sick.

I have never ever had any problem eating meals without gravy. What a ridiculous thing to say. Not every meal has gravy over it does it unless you are pretty strange.

Food is not dry and difficult to eat. I don't need my meals to be like baby food

HardlyEver · 21/11/2020 07:43

I’m with you @lynsey91, and like you found traditional gravy a revolting, soggy affair even before turning vegetarian, but the ‘gravy’ you get on chips from a Chinese takeaway (at least around here) is completely different, more of a sauce, containing soy sauce, oyster sauce , MSG etc. Not a natural ingredient in sight, but weirdly delicious. Grin

Some aren’t vegetarian, but our local one’s gravy is.

unchienandalusia · 21/11/2020 15:31

Curry sauce? From a Chinese? Never had that and certainly not Chinese chips. Sounds grim.

Only chips with sauce that are lush are poutine. Canadian chips with gravy abs cheese curds. They are damn fine.

riotlady · 21/11/2020 15:39

YABU, egg fried rice is the only way! I don’t understand chips with curry at all

louderthan1 · 21/11/2020 17:07

So do you have rice or noodles as well as chips? Or are the chips the only carb?

BobbinThreadbare123 · 21/11/2020 17:10

@louderthan1 you can have whatever you like. You are definitely not eating this for health...Grin
I like something with noodles, DH likes a rice dish, we have chips, something sauce-y/spicy and Chinese snacky things. Oh I am so hungry..!

IHaveBrilloHair · 21/11/2020 17:10

I always have Singapore rice noodles too.

StCharlotte · 21/11/2020 17:19

@IHaveBrilloHair

Chinese munchy box.
OMG I want that now!

I just had to check if our local Chinese takeaway even does chips. They do: under "desserts and other".

Zoeykh · 21/11/2020 17:38

Snackbox it's really not a snack it's a giant meal made of chips gravey noodles and rice all together dh has curry but its just so good!
We also get chunky indian chips as they're called on the menu with our Indians Blush found it depends on each shop what they're like but chip shop chips just dont go well though
