Chips with Chinese

Okay, so my favourite thread in a long time has vanished and it's left me with feelings of confusion and a yearning to know.........

Do chips belong anywhere in a Chinese takeaway?!

I think they do and would argue that they don't just belong - they MAKE a Chinese takeaway. Excuse me! Chips and curry sauce, how can these not be a part of your meal?! Duh!

YABU - Chips don't belong anywhere near my Chinese - What are you crazy?!

YANBU - OMG make mine a double portion and no going easy on that curry sauce!

@haliborange0verdose you've put what I was trying to get at way more succinctly!

Lozz22 · 20/11/2020 10:24

I prefer chips if I have chicken and mushroom or a sweet and sour dish. Also quite finicky with rice dishes from a Chinese take away due to having had food poisoning from them

BarbaraofSeville · 20/11/2020 10:27

Thanks @BobbinThreadbare123, that's interesting and thanks for the recommendation. I do like Liverpool and it's certainly somewhere I'd like to spend more time.

halib I think Liverpool's 'Chinese' fish and chip shops are fairly unique to your city.

In Leeds, the fish and chip shops almost always only sell fish and chips (plus maybe pies and sausages) and are mostly run by people of UK heritage, usually Yorkshire for centuries.

I know of one that's run by an Indian family, but here the Chinese people who've gone into the restaurant/takeaway business stick almost exclusively to the UK version of Chinese food although we do have a small 'Chinese quarter' and some restaurants that do a more traditional Chinese menu and have a lot of Chinese clientelle.

@haliborange0verdose

As I'm reading through this thread, it's slowly dawning on me that in some parts of the country, "chippies" and "Chinese takeaway" are two separate entities! I'm in Liverpool and I can hardly think of any chippies that aren't Chinese, other than two which are Greek but still also sell Chinese dishes. So the two are inseparable for me. I don't think we've ever had a Chinese chippy meal without chips.
Yeah actually - a chippy is usually a Chinese and the fish & chip shops (i.e. like the ones in Southport!) we call the English/by their name.

Not a massive Chinese food fan, but my chippy order is half and half with curry AND gravy. Heaven.

ACanOfBeans · 20/11/2020 10:55

Loveee chips with sweet and sour sauce 😍

Planesmistakenforstars · 20/11/2020 11:28

God no. Chips shouldn't be anywhere near a Chinese. But then I don't particularly like chips, and chip shop style chips are the worst of all, so I wouldn't have them with anything.

SpillingTheTea · 20/11/2020 11:29

Chilli chips. I often get chips along side my curry and rice because I'm a greedy bastard Grin

I've had completely the opposite realisation. Never thought the two were linked in some areas. I can't think of a Chinese takeaway that serves fish and chips, or a chippy that serves Chinese food.

mrsbyers · 20/11/2020 11:33

I’m not generally a chip lover but the ones from the Chinese with their crunchy nobbly ends are to die for

S111n20 · 20/11/2020 11:50

Ok so I’m getting Chinese tonight now 😉
Chinese and I’m a celebrity get me out of here 👌 perfect. AND yes chips will be on my order.

helloxhristmas · 20/11/2020 12:01

There are no Chinese chippies near me now but god I loved them when I was a student in Scotland.

Heartofglass12345 · 20/11/2020 12:02

I only have chips if we're having a chippy, my husband always has them though. I prefer other stuff if we're having a Chinese or Indian like rice, poppadoms etc

NuniaBeeswax · 20/11/2020 12:32

A chinese chippy is such a weird concept to me... but in Scotland (or the West coast at least) chippys tend to be Italian owned.

Not to me - lots of chip shops in the NW of England are owned and run by Chinese families, especially in Greater Manchester and Liverpool where there are big Chinese communities, and they cook and serve fish and chips alongside Chinese food.

They're separate here, but the Chinese restaurants and takeaways still sell chips. They're different to the chip shop ones.

Im in Dublin and the Chinese takeaways here only sell Chinese food.Apart from 2 i can think of.1 sells pizza and the orther one sells burgers and wings. From teh same shop but they have different names.

And chippers here are mostly run by Italians.

lynsey91 · 20/11/2020 12:37

@BarbaraofSeville

Never understand having nice crispy food like chips, roast potatoes etc and then pouring gravy over them to make them soggy

Do you not have gravy on a roast dinner then?

No and neither does DH. The only meal that has gravy on it in this house is stew.

Gravy is vile and disgusting and makes nice food soggy. I just don't get why people have it unless they like eating slop which I don't

WitchesSpelleas · 20/11/2020 12:38

Gravy is disgusting on anything. Never understand having nice crispy food like chips, roast potatoes etc and then pouring gravy over them to make them soggy.

There's no rule that says gravy has to go on crispy food. Try it with mashed potatoes instead.

NuniaBeeswax · 20/11/2020 12:42

"Not to me - lots of chip shops in the NW of England are owned and run by Chinese families, especially in Greater Manchester and Liverpool where there are big Chinese communities, and they cook and serve fish and chips alongside Chinese food."

Chippies here might sell fish and chips, but they're not chippies, they just sell fish and chips alongside chinese food. (And usually chicken maryland or something like that too.)

..and now it's just occurred to me that there might be people unfamiliar with chippies selling pizza/pasta??

Ginfordinner · 20/11/2020 12:44

Correct

IHaveBrilloHair · 20/11/2020 13:15

Where I am in Scotland, the Indian takeaways also do kebabs, in fact I've never seen a stand alone kebab shop.

NuniaBeeswax · 20/11/2020 13:20

"Where I am in Scotland, the Indian takeaways also do kebabs, in fact I've never seen a stand alone kebab shop."

Actually yeh that's true.

sparklefarts · 20/11/2020 13:20

@howtobe

Salt and chilli chips.

Better than sex.

Agreed
Percivalthebabyspider · 20/11/2020 13:39

Is this a UK thing? I’ve never heard of it but chips and curry sauce has me intrigued!

Percivalthebabyspider · 20/11/2020 13:40

Oh and I’ve never seen chips in a Chinese take away here, they’re totally separate. Here it’s fish n chips or chicken n chips, often with gravy and salad.
