Positive Covid test but we have no food in!

I got a text at 10pm tonight to say the DS is positive for CV. He hasn’t really had symptoms but THREE members at his SN college tested positive earlier this week so he was sent home to isolate and I wanted to make sure as DH is a keyworker. I really didn’t think it would be positive.

I’m bloody furious that staff have passed it onto vulnerable students. DS is classed as CEV so has been taught to be very good with hygiene but the staff haven’t been wearing masks, and didn’t seem to adhering to 2m social distancing at his induction session, but that’s another thread.

This means the whole household needs to isolate from now obviously but we are a family of 6 (adults) and get through a LOT of food so I shop every 2/3 days. The next big shop was due to be tomorrow!

The earliest online delivery I can get is for Wednesday and we literally only have milk, eggs, chips, meat and rice/pasta but not enough for 4 days. No squash/bread/cereal/yoghurts/fruit/veg etc.

There is literally no one local we can ask. DH’s brother lives an hour away but his family also has Covid (not from us as we haven’t seen them for months).

It’ll be a lot of shopping for a volunteer to get, if I can find one.

I’ve booked the other 5 of us for a drive in tests tomorrow so I was thinking about me and DH double masking and scooting round Tesco chucking stuff in trolleys as quickly as possible straight afterwards.

Should we? If we have it tomorrow, we had it today too!

I think you need to try absolutely every other Avenue of getting a food delivery first. Phone all of the nearby supermarkets explaining. Put a message on your local Facebook page asking for help.

makingmiracles · 15/11/2020 00:19

Have you got an Iceland anywhere near you? They’ve been great with deliveries in my area, when Tesco et al were all booked up for weeks you could often get a next day delivery from Iceland.

Don’t feel bad about having to ask volunteers if it comes to that, that’s what they volunteered for and will understand, not everyone is a singe person or couple, some people isolating will have larger families.

Gancanny · 15/11/2020 00:21

No, you shouldn't go "scooting" around Tesco.

There will be local agencies who can help, try your residents page on FB or your local councillor who will be able to direct you. In my area its the council who are running food delivery services and supporting those who are isolating/quarantining/vulnerable. Even if you think a full food shop is too much for a volunteer to collect, they've volunteered and so would expect to be utilised.

MeringueCloud · 15/11/2020 00:21

Can you do a click and collect instead?

CookieMumsters · 15/11/2020 00:21

You dont know that the college staff passed it to your family. It could be from anywhere.

You did however know that your son had been tested, you could have prepared for this possibility. You need to take some responsibility for this.

Lockheart · 15/11/2020 00:22

You can order takeaways, get grocery deliveries from Amazon or Deliveroo, speak to your local covid mutual aid organisation who can put you in touch with volunteers.

You'll manage for 4 days.

dementedpixie · 15/11/2020 00:22

Nine of the rest if you should be getting tested without symptoms. Even if they are negative you would need to isolate anyway.
Try other shops for online delivery
Ask neighbours
Eat takeaway

EmilySpinach · 15/11/2020 00:22

Do you have Deliveroo where you are? It depends on the area but here they will do groceries from Morrison’s, Co-Op and Aldi.

dementedpixie · 15/11/2020 00:23

None*

Gancanny · 15/11/2020 00:23

Do you or anyone in the house have FB? Put a status on asking if anyone would mind picking up a click and collect order for you.

Also if you have a co-op near you, phone and ask if they're delivering. Our local co-op store and several others in the area are doing same day delivery of telephone orders for local residents.

helpimgoingcrazyhere · 15/11/2020 00:23

Just ask a local volunteer - please don’t go to the supermarket. Even if its a big shop, these circumstances are exactly why people offer to help! A lot of places have a local covid FB support page/group maybe thats a good place to start. Good luck!

38weekswithno2 · 15/11/2020 00:23

Well, yes... but that doesn't really help ops situation now.

RelightMyPfizer · 15/11/2020 00:23

Track and Trace will send you a food parcel- ask when they call

Our Co_op is on Deliveroo for basics?

PurpleFlower1983 · 15/11/2020 00:23

YABU for blaming the staff, you don’t know it was from them.

blue25 · 15/11/2020 00:23

No of course you shouldn’t go to Tesco. Why are you even asking that? Surely you have friends who can help out??

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 15/11/2020 00:24

Why have you booked everyone in for a test? It wont change anything. You still all need to isolate for 14 days.

A negative test does not get you out of isolation; it could still be incubating and you can still develop it within a couple weeks of exposure. A negative test now doesnt mean you dont have it/wont develop it.

That being said, when you're told to self isolate as a precaution, you can go to the shops for food in an emergency, no other options situation. Thats what the guidance used to say anyway.

Flibbertyjibbit · 15/11/2020 00:25

Please don't go food shopping when you should be isolating. Use local Facebook page to contact volunteers. You don't have any friends at all locally? I'd be happy to receive a call from a friend asking me to do a big food shop in these circumstances. Have you tried all supermarkets? Keep checking the websites as slots often come back up. Do you really not have anything in the freezer? Maybe a few odd meals for a few days till you can sort a delivery but that's better than going out when you should be isolating.

ViralVera · 15/11/2020 00:25

No click and collects available either.

Bit of a coincidence that 3 staff members test positive then DS gets it isn’t it Cookie? None of the rest of us have had symptoms. They are in his ‘bubble’. One of them for definite was in college on Monday, then got a positive test on Tuesday. I am fucking raging.

Deliveroo will pickup groceries for you. Also contact your council. What about contacting s neighbour or putting a shout out on your local Facebook page. Unless you live in the middle of nowhere there must be someone? What about the parents of your children's friends, surely one of them could run an errand?

LittleOwl153 · 15/11/2020 00:26

How close are you to Morrisons... they do a doorstep next day drop for anyone isolating - but you need to be within 10 miles of store...

Gancanny · 15/11/2020 00:26

This too.

A test will only work if you have covid. You could test on day four and have it come back negative then develop symptoms on day seven, which is why you have to stick to the whole isolation period regardless. Too many people are getting tested because they love with someone who is positive or have been identified as a contact of someone who is positive, are getting a negative result, and so carrying on with their normal activities even though they could still be incubating it but they think its fine because they had a negative test.

fitflopqueen · 15/11/2020 00:26

NHS volunteers - google this, should point you in right direction for a local volunteer

QueenOfTheDoubleWide · 15/11/2020 00:26

I thought you should only get a test if you have symptoms?
Just isolate as you have been told and try for food delivery. Morrisons offer food boxes which can be got quickly

Paddingtonjuice · 15/11/2020 00:26

I would say definitely no to going out shopping. There are a lot of vulnerable people in the shops. There are shops delivering groceries on deliveroo and Uber eats. Look at milk and more online. I use them. They are really good. Look at your local Facebook- lots of butchers and grocers will deliver to you. Post on Facebook for a volunteer. Please don’t go out knowing you have covid.

Floralnomad · 15/11/2020 00:27

I’m sorry but are you seriously saying that in a family of 6 adults not one of you has a friend locally who could go shopping for you ?
