Positive Covid test but we have no food in!

ViralVera · 15/11/2020 00:15

I got a text at 10pm tonight to say the DS is positive for CV. He hasn’t really had symptoms but THREE members at his SN college tested positive earlier this week so he was sent home to isolate and I wanted to make sure as DH is a keyworker. I really didn’t think it would be positive.

I’m bloody furious that staff have passed it onto vulnerable students. DS is classed as CEV so has been taught to be very good with hygiene but the staff haven’t been wearing masks, and didn’t seem to adhering to 2m social distancing at his induction session, but that’s another thread.

This means the whole household needs to isolate from now obviously but we are a family of 6 (adults) and get through a LOT of food so I shop every 2/3 days. The next big shop was due to be tomorrow!

The earliest online delivery I can get is for Wednesday and we literally only have milk, eggs, chips, meat and rice/pasta but not enough for 4 days. No squash/bread/cereal/yoghurts/fruit/veg etc.

There is literally no one local we can ask. DH’s brother lives an hour away but his family also has Covid (not from us as we haven’t seen them for months).

It’ll be a lot of shopping for a volunteer to get, if I can find one.

I’ve booked the other 5 of us for a drive in tests tomorrow so I was thinking about me and DH double masking and scooting round Tesco chucking stuff in trolleys as quickly as possible straight afterwards.

Should we? If we have it tomorrow, we had it today too!

Yanbu op. The reason were all wearing masks is to prevent the spead of covid surely? And while d household needs to isolate, you being careful and going to the ahop is no different to being asymptomatic and going. Ffs why are we queuing in the rain and wearing masks if its too dangerous to be in a supermarket?

All the faff involved in calling councillors etc is ridiculous. Half hr trip to tesco then self isolate. I certainly wouldnt be fannying about calling local councillors, no matter what some MNetters say! Go to the shop op. Yanbu.

TheFlis12345 · 15/11/2020 00:27

You are furious that college staff passed it on to your son but want to go to a busy supermarket knowing you may well be infected? Really?

Excitedforxmas · 15/11/2020 00:27

Take away first day and book a click and collect for next day. Iceland have been excellent in my area too

ScottishStottie · 15/11/2020 00:27

You all need to self isolate for 14 days as close contacts to your ds. So thats a no to 'scooting around tesco'...

Contact support network links as highlighted in the email/text auth the test results and take it from there. Ask a colleague/neighbour/teacher/anyone etc etc if they could do you a favour. Even if not a close friend or family, im sure plenty of people would help if you reached out to them.

Gancanny · 15/11/2020 00:28

One of them for definite was in college on Monday, then got a positive test on Tuesday. I am fucking raging.

And you'd potentially be putting another family in that exact same situation if you were to go to Tesco. School didn't infect your son on purpose but you could be purposely infecting others if you break quarantine.

dementedpixie · 15/11/2020 00:28

Surely 1 of the 6 adults has a friend that will pick up groceries
No test without symptoms

ghostyslovesheets · 15/11/2020 00:29

Day after my positive I had a call via track and trace asking if I needed help/shopping etc - you local council will also have supply for people isolating

PerkingFaintly · 15/11/2020 00:29

Click & Collect slots are usually available more readily than deliveries.

Your order can be picked up by another person to whom you've forwarded the confirmation email, if you find someone who can do this for you.

Here's the Tesco FAQ on it, but other supermarkets are similar:
www.tesco.com/help/groceries-faq/

katy1213 · 15/11/2020 00:29

Surely you can last until Weds if you have meat/pasta/eggs. Squash, cereal and yogurts are hardly the staff of life!

Noseyoldcow · 15/11/2020 00:29

At the beginning of the pandemic, we were caught out as could not get home delivery slots, and due to vulnerability, we really didn't want to go out to shop. Morrisons saved us with their £35 food boxes which come by courier, so no messing with delivery slots. Just checked and they are still doing them. Contents were not what we ideally would have chosen, but were better than no food at all!

istheheatingon · 15/11/2020 00:29

Why are you "raging"? It is not the staffs fault. How do you know they didn't get it from a student showing no symptoms? Or from their children who have to go to school so that they can work with yours?

Yippeeforme · 15/11/2020 00:29

Try deliveroo for groceries in your area?

Scootingthebreeze · 15/11/2020 00:29

I understand you're in a difficult position, however you must see how hypocritical it would be to go round Tesco shopping when you know there's a good chance you have the virus, yet you point anger at school staff and blame them for giving your son covid. You literally want to go and shed covid around tesco because you haven't been organised with regularly topping up your food shop.

Councils have things in place to support people in this position. Plus if you ring your local supermarket that offers delivery, they can often sort out a special slot for speedy delivery.

Another idea is post your ingredients on budget cooking sites and people can help form meals to stretch them while you wait for shopping.

Any local small shops like greengrocers might be able to help with a food delivery too.

Hoping some of these ideas help you out

borntohula · 15/11/2020 00:30

Pathetic that people are always so desperate to lay blame somewhere.

newmumwithquestions · 15/11/2020 00:30

No. You can’t scoot round Tesco. Surely you’re not serious?

You have some food in to tide you over whilst you sort something out. What’s in the freezer? As pp said you can post on local Facebook groups for help.
You say your DH is a keyworker, so you must live within a commute to a colleague you can ask. 6 adults - one of you must have the number of someone local!

PerkingFaintly · 15/11/2020 00:30

Sorry, just saw your post about lack of Click & Collect slots.

llm24 · 15/11/2020 00:31

No no no don’t do it
You must have someone to help

Do you live in Scotland ?
When you get a phone call from track and trace here they will ask you if you need support from shopping to walking your dog and you will get the help you need

Madein1995 · 15/11/2020 00:31

I dont see what other options are availanle anyhow. Op isnt coughing her guts up and intending to go out sans mask dragging all the family with her! If theres no one available then there is no one available. Ringing local councillors, school mums and grasping at other straws is just too faffy, inconvenient and stressful.

ilikehammy · 15/11/2020 00:31

Deliveroo have supermarkets/corner shop things on sometimes. A bit pricey but it could see you through until a main shop.

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 15/11/2020 00:32

I was assuming the OP had booked her family in for a private test, and she is paying for it. I'm sure she hasnt booked them with the NHS as none of the family qualify and the NHS have enough testing know their hands for those with symptoms.
Right OP?

Wherehavetheteletubbiesgone · 15/11/2020 00:32

You don't need to go to Tesco a human can easily survive nearly two weeks without food, not water and squash isn't an essential. You can make do till Wednesday.

Gancanny · 15/11/2020 00:32

The reason were all wearing masks is to prevent the spead of covid surely? And while d household needs to isolate, you being careful and going to the ahop is no different to being asymptomatic and going

There is a world of difference between wearing a mask at the shops to prevent the spread of covid on the assumption that you may be infectious but don't know it yet and willfully going to Tesco in the knowledge you are legally supposed to be quarantining and that you have been exposed to covid and therefore are likely to be brewing it yourself.

SleepingStandingUp · 15/11/2020 00:32

Have you looked at delivery slots on Amazon Fresh? If basically from Morrisons but they normally can do same or next day. £40 minimum spend which you can obviously do

Emelene · 15/11/2020 00:33

Don't go to Tesco. You are upset (understandably) that your vulnerable son has been exposed.. But "scooting round Tesco" would definitely expose other people and you don't know what the consequences would be for them too xx

Brunt0n · 15/11/2020 00:34

You’re ‘fucking raging’ people have passed COVID on whilst just doing their jobs yet you’re happy to go around Tesco and pass it to everyone there? Brilliant.
