Positive Covid test but we have no food in!

ViralVera · 15/11/2020 00:15

I got a text at 10pm tonight to say the DS is positive for CV. He hasn’t really had symptoms but THREE members at his SN college tested positive earlier this week so he was sent home to isolate and I wanted to make sure as DH is a keyworker. I really didn’t think it would be positive.

I’m bloody furious that staff have passed it onto vulnerable students. DS is classed as CEV so has been taught to be very good with hygiene but the staff haven’t been wearing masks, and didn’t seem to adhering to 2m social distancing at his induction session, but that’s another thread.

This means the whole household needs to isolate from now obviously but we are a family of 6 (adults) and get through a LOT of food so I shop every 2/3 days. The next big shop was due to be tomorrow!

The earliest online delivery I can get is for Wednesday and we literally only have milk, eggs, chips, meat and rice/pasta but not enough for 4 days. No squash/bread/cereal/yoghurts/fruit/veg etc.

There is literally no one local we can ask. DH’s brother lives an hour away but his family also has Covid (not from us as we haven’t seen them for months).

It’ll be a lot of shopping for a volunteer to get, if I can find one.

I’ve booked the other 5 of us for a drive in tests tomorrow so I was thinking about me and DH double masking and scooting round Tesco chucking stuff in trolleys as quickly as possible straight afterwards.

Should we? If we have it tomorrow, we had it today too!

"Raging" about staff passing covid to your son, but you want to go to a supermarket????? Hmm

Sweetnhappy1 · 15/11/2020 01:42

Have a look at Co-Op delivery, they were really good when we were in a similar situation: shop.coop.co.uk/

Definitely don't go to the shops. Workers can also be vulnerable and need people to be doing the right thing to protect them.

ViralVera · 15/11/2020 01:43

DS does not go anywhere other than college. He has even been biking in, in the rain, as he was worried about catching CV on the bloody bus! He has autism so doesn’t communicate well. He only said he had a sore throat when I told him his test was positive. He has been isolating himself in his bedroom and wearing a mask when he comes out but still as DH works in a massive distribution centre employing thousands of people, we’re having tests as he will need to make his staff aware if his is positive, although he will not be going to work obviously.

DS’s test was not unnecessary either Hmm. Even if he doesn’t, hopefully become unwell, there are still long term effects from Covid so I wanted to check if he had picked it up and have it on record.

He had suffered mentally from isolation in lockdown as he only has college which is why I sent him back, with reassurance that there were strict measures in place.

Tests should be available to people who have had direct contact with positive cases. It’s not my fault the government are so shit that they’re not!

DH was coming with me to Tesco so he could go to one end of the shop and I could start at the other, so in and out in 15 minutes instead of 30. Makes sense No? These are plenty of unmasked couples/families still in my local Tesco. We’ll be using the scanner, wiping it before and after use, obviously not getting close to anybody. DD was in Tesco today, and DH was at work. Does 12 hours make that much of a difference?

The reason I’m raging at the college is why at least one of the staff members was in college the DAY BEFORE (Monday) we were notified there were positive tests (Tuesday)? That person is DS’s support worker. Tests take at least 24 hours to come back don’t they? DS’s took 29 hours which I thought was amazingly quick! If they had symptoms, to need to take a test, why were they there after the weekend? DS only goes in part time so he wouldn’t have had contact with that person for 4 days before Monday. Do colleges do random tests and they came back and none of the them had symptoms before, really?

The chances of us infecting anyone in Tesco in minuscule with masks on, no cough or sneezing, just by walking past them

You’re willing to risk the health of everyone inside that supermarket?
Have you completely missed the part about asymptomatic carriers? Have you been asleep since March?

  • Log into Facebook and look up the covid response group for your local area or even just the normal group for your area. They will be able to get you help or point you in the right direction to get help.
  • Deliveroo depending on location have deliveries from Co-op, M&S, petrol stations and smaller shops.
- Many small convince shops will happily deliver a small shop to see you through until you can get a shop.
  • Contact the place your son attends and ask if they have contacts who can help you as you’re so stuck.
  • Your local church will likely help.
  • As will the local councillors.
  • Your local council will have specific information about this very set up.
  • Do you have a WhatsApp group for your street, your son’s friend’s parents?
  • My teenager’s friends would happily take my card to Co-op to do a £20, single carrier bag shop to see us through. I would ask their parents if they would be ok with this.

Do not leave your house and risk the lives of other people. You have many, many options available to you, don’t do this.

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 15/11/2020 01:47

@ViralVera

But you would need to be tested every day for 14 days after contact with a positive case.
Testing people who have been a contact is not going to help. A negative test one day does not mean you wont have it. Are you going to test your family every day for the next 2 weeks?

Are you paying for the tests you're getting tomorrow for the 5 of you? Or did you just say all 5 of you have symptoms to get it on the NHS?

user1473878824 · 15/11/2020 01:47

@TheFlis12345

You are furious that college staff passed it on to your son but want to go to a busy supermarket knowing you may well be infected? Really?
Quite.
BananaPop2020 · 15/11/2020 01:47

Why are you asking for opinions when you have made it quite clear you are going to do this?

BlackBucketOfCheese · 15/11/2020 01:48

Your 15 min shopping trip does not make sense.

I’m sure MN is able to provide IP addresses/info to the police when self harm is mentioned, I wonder if it would be possible in this kind of situation?

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 15/11/2020 01:49

And no, they dont take at least 24 hours.
I had a test at a drive through testing centre at 10.45am and for the results test message at 9.30pm that night.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 15/11/2020 01:49

The testing criteria is different for some workers

It maybe the staff are routinely tested (we are at work I work in mh) but hospital staff are not necessarily

Maybe the tests were routine. That how we found out staff had covid not because they were ill and unfortunately it’s been passed on. We have no idea who it’s been passed on to yet time will tell

Peppafrig · 15/11/2020 01:49

You are raging at the staff. Really the ones who put themselves on the line everyday ? They more than likely caught it off a pupil. Yet your happy to go to Tesco and pass it on too any vulnerable person and their families really .

Inkpaperstars · 15/11/2020 01:50

Try Amazon prime and also local smaller shops, eg corner shops, small co op etc as many will do local deliveries. If no luck then first thing Monday call your local council and ask for details of support groups and volunteers...there are people who have volunteered to do shopping for those in this exact situation. Local churches for example are also involved. You might find details online as well. Please don't go to Tesco.

BlackBucketOfCheese · 15/11/2020 01:51

OP honestly in my 16 years on and off this site, this is one of the most irresponsible, self entitled and altogether stupid posts I have ever seen on here.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 15/11/2020 01:52

BlackBucketOfCheese What you think the police are interested in someone popping to the shops who is meant to be self isolating Grin

Not unless it’s a very quiet night

Bajalaluna · 15/11/2020 01:52

Under no circumstances should you be "scooting round Tesco" absolutely shocking to even think that's a viable option. What about the vunerable/high risk supermarket staff members such as myself, who have no choice but to go in to work, relying on the general public to have an ounce of common decency and sense to NOT enter a packed supermarket when it's very likely they could be infectious. Book a delivery stay the fuck home, and make the best of what you have/reach out to volunteers. I'm sure you can get someone to drop you off some essentials, big bag of pasta and sauces, and make do for a few days. Hardly going to starve to death, even if you have to live off bare essentials for a few days.

throwaway100000 · 15/11/2020 01:54

15 minutes with 2 of you is still too long ffs. How on earth does it take that long to pick up a few day’s worth of essentials and pay, especially when you’re using the scanners?

What if you’re selected for a random full shop rescan? It’s in the T&Cs. You’ll be festering around the tills and coming into contact with so many people.

What if there’s queues to enter or at the tills - again you’ll be in close proximity to innocent people in a confided space. At this rate, you’re worse than the school staff. If you do go ahead, just be aware that it is people like you that are the reason we’re still in this mess and I hope you’re ashamed of yourself.

BlackBucketOfCheese · 15/11/2020 01:55

What you think the police are interested in someone popping to the shops who is meant to be self isolating

I live in a busy, crime laden city and the police gave a rather hefty fine to someone doing pretty much just that. 🤷‍♀️

throwaway100000 · 15/11/2020 01:56

You are aware that if you called the store and explained the situation, they would tell you to stay home and not visit their store right?

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 15/11/2020 01:56

What after a tip off from MN

Yes of course Hmm

BugCatcher879 · 15/11/2020 01:58

You are still going to isolate for the full time even if your tests are negative arent you??

Amazon food.
Try all supermarkets and Iceland
Ask a few diff people for about 10 things each if you dont want to over burden one person
Take away even
Fb group post.

It's what everyone else has had to do.

We have a helpline in my country if really stuck. Not sure if they do in England.

Do not go out. And stay isolated the whole time even if tests neg.

BlackBucketOfCheese · 15/11/2020 01:58

What after a tip off from MN

Well of course not. But you’re one of those, let’s pick, pick, pick.

Bajalaluna · 15/11/2020 01:58

I hope if you do go out, someone spots you knowing your family should be isolating, and that you get reported and fined. People constantly flouting the rules, and thinking their circumstances make them exempt from following them are the reason the cases are just getting worse, and prolonging this shit show for the rest of us.

BugCatcher879 · 15/11/2020 02:01

You may also be eligible for support from theNHS Volunteer Responders programme. You can call 0808 196 3646 and ask for help to pick up food, prescriptions and essential items.

You can alsocontact your local authorityto find out what support services are available in your area.

ViralVera · 15/11/2020 02:02

Well we’re allowed to go out for testing Bajalaluna and the shop is only across the road from there.

Haven’t decided yet though so untwist your knickers.

@dementedpixie

Nine of the rest if you should be getting tested without symptoms. Even if they are negative you would need to isolate anyway. Try other shops for online delivery Ask neighbours Eat takeaway
No not true, doctor told me I didn't need to isolate unless relative was positive. So I waited and isolated until we got negative result through. Silly suggesting I should have isolated longer with no symptoms and no immediate contact with anyone diagnosed with symptoms or who hasn't had contact with someone diagnosed positive.

Go get tested yourself. Waste NHS time and be precious.

They're not positive. Stop scaremongering. You want to use up scarce resources on a whim? Don't be hysterical.

Most people don't get COVID. If they do they get it mildly or no serious implications.

Anyway OP just order in food for the requisite time or get someone to get it for you and leave it on the step, it's only a few days.

@dementedpixie wants to waste medical time
