Positive Covid test but we have no food in!

ViralVera · 15/11/2020 00:15

I got a text at 10pm tonight to say the DS is positive for CV. He hasn’t really had symptoms but THREE members at his SN college tested positive earlier this week so he was sent home to isolate and I wanted to make sure as DH is a keyworker. I really didn’t think it would be positive.

I’m bloody furious that staff have passed it onto vulnerable students. DS is classed as CEV so has been taught to be very good with hygiene but the staff haven’t been wearing masks, and didn’t seem to adhering to 2m social distancing at his induction session, but that’s another thread.

This means the whole household needs to isolate from now obviously but we are a family of 6 (adults) and get through a LOT of food so I shop every 2/3 days. The next big shop was due to be tomorrow!

The earliest online delivery I can get is for Wednesday and we literally only have milk, eggs, chips, meat and rice/pasta but not enough for 4 days. No squash/bread/cereal/yoghurts/fruit/veg etc.

There is literally no one local we can ask. DH’s brother lives an hour away but his family also has Covid (not from us as we haven’t seen them for months).

It’ll be a lot of shopping for a volunteer to get, if I can find one.

I’ve booked the other 5 of us for a drive in tests tomorrow so I was thinking about me and DH double masking and scooting round Tesco chucking stuff in trolleys as quickly as possible straight afterwards.

Should we? If we have it tomorrow, we had it today too!

Another vote here for getting an order from a supermarket on Deliveroo.

Hercwasonaroll · 15/11/2020 01:04

Unlike getting up close while working with vulnerable students with no masks on.

THE STAFF ARE AT RISK TOO. Probably more so than your ds. You're being such an arse about them. Why are you sending your ds somewhere for 5 hours a day if you don't trust them?

If one of those staff members gets seriously ill now I hope you're apologetic and realise how much risk they have been put at by our crap government.

ohtheholidays · 15/11/2020 01:06

Milk and more is worth looking at as well OP if amazon doesn't have everything they need.

Just stick in your postcode and see if they deliver in your area.

How do you know your asymptomatic son wasn't the one who gave covid to the teachers?

JingsMahBucket · 15/11/2020 01:08

I hope some posters on MN finally understand why those people prepping for a minimum of 14 days’ isolation were advising others to do so. This is the prime example they/we were giving but others kept calling the prepping posters horrible names and being derisive.

@ViralVera once you get groceries for tomorrow sorted out, head over to the Preppers board for some basic 14-day store cupboard supply help: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/preppers.

Also why would you BOTH g

SunShinesStill · 15/11/2020 01:11

@ViralVera please don’t go to tesco thinking you can’t spread it. The first lockdown and wave was full of people saying they didn’t know how they caught it..... they had only been to the supermarket once a week.

Honestly, even though your neighbours don’t know you, if I knew my Neighbours were stuck, I would absolutely go shopping for them to tide them over and would hate to think they couldn’t ask.

Hercwasonaroll · 15/11/2020 01:11

Most people don't need to prep for 14 day isolation. They have friends and neighbours who will help.

evenBetter · 15/11/2020 01:12

obviously none of you should leave the house at all. This isn’t a debate. You have food in the house, there are multiple options for acquiring more food, as detailed in this thread, you do not put labourers or decent, masked, members of society at risk. Stay home.

SleepingStandingUp · 15/11/2020 01:12

@Time2change2. No I'm in a town north of Birmingham and we can use this. Couldn't get same day delivery today but did last time

Whatsnewpussyhat · 15/11/2020 01:13

I ordered off Amazon fresh at half past midnight yesterday. Delivery slots were available every 2 hours from 9am.
Because it's morrisons there's a decent selection.
Minimum order was £15 with £3.99 delivery or free over £40.

AdoraBell · 15/11/2020 01:13

Don’t go to the shops. You’ve had lots of advice for options.

Check your cupboards and see if you can plan some meals from what you do have right now. Order as much as you need for the delivery slot you mentioned on Wednesday, also see if they have a delivery slot for the next week.

Thisisconfusing · 15/11/2020 01:15

Please please don’t go to the supermarket . Masks help but you could still pass the infection on. If you do that you are only doing the same thing as you are complaining about . And the end result could be deadly or life changing for someone else . Oh and it is illegal and you could get a hefty fine . There are plenty of options for keeping food ticking over for the next few days so it would be helpful if you have us a rough idea where you lived and we could be more specific . So where we live in the London conurbation - we even have rapid deliveries from Sainsbury’s ( chop chop max 20 items) , rapid Waitrose , and Coop . I also used Amazon- you can gets trays of baked beans etc There are also some excellent wholesalers who have turned suppliers - so in the south east Osolocal were brilliant in the first lockdown ( meat , fish , fruit, veg , store cupboard ). I thought their pricing is fair. There are similar organisations elsewhere eg dartfresh in the south west . And as some have suggested there is also Iceland and we still have Tesco click and collect slots here too. Most of our local corner shops will drop off stuff if you are self isolating . I realise you must feel in a bit of a panic about feeding a large family - but take a deep breath. NHS volunteers will definitely help - I’ve got plenty of friends who are doing that and it wouldn’t phase volunteers at all to pick up shopping for you . Good luck

JingsMahBucket · 15/11/2020 01:16

@Hercwasonaroll

Most people don't need to prep for 14 day isolation. They have friends and neighbours who will help.
Still resisting common sense and self-responsibility? Those friends or family could also be sick or unable to help you in time due to their own personal reasons or even work scheduling conflicts. It would still be less stressful to keep food for 14 days in the house. Your parents, grandparents, etc all used to do it. Why the lack of responsibility now in the last 15 to 20 years? (Extreme financial duress notwithstanding.)
Thisisconfusing · 15/11/2020 01:17

When I say about the fine because you will have been told to self isolate by test and trace ?

throwaway100000 · 15/11/2020 01:17

You’re being just as selfish as the teachers you despise if you go shopping whilst you’re supposed to be self isolating. This is how the bloody disease spreads, come on now. You’re part of the problem.

Why can’t you just order takeaway for a couple of days until you can secure a food delivery? They tend to leave it on your doorstep so no contact necessary. Or try the Morrison’s food boxes or ask your council for help.

PyongyangKipperbang · 15/11/2020 01:27

So its ok when you have no choice but you are raging when you dont know that the staff members may have been left feeling that they had no choice?

Hypocrite much?

BeautifulandWilfulandDead · 15/11/2020 01:27

Bloody hell OP! It's a virus...nobody catches it on purpose, and nobody transmits it on purpose, especially not in the course of their job where they are unlucky enough not to be able to do it at home like many people. I don't really understand what you ate 'raging' at, as far as I can see, a person put them self on the front line to educate your child, unfortunately caught Covid, and unwittingly passed it on. I'm very sure that poor person would have rather been at home doing their job via zoom meetings, but needs must! No, you definitely can't go to Tesco. Check out the other supermarkets, try Amazon Prime Now, or just make do.

lurchersrule · 15/11/2020 01:28

I don't think OP should go to the supermarket and her comments about school staff were pretty awful. However, I think all the outrage directed at her on here is almost as equally misplaced. The more we learn, from what I have read, it's becoming clear that shopping is not a high-risk activity as far as covid goes. I found the article below very interesting. Some of the comments on here about OP's friends, or lack of them, are disgusting.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 15/11/2020 01:29

It’s a difficult situation op not everyone has access to delivery services or have people around that can drop off some shopping

I know some local taxi firms will shop and drop off (Pre covid) so that’s perhaps another option

Social distancing, washing hands and wearing masks (I know his teachers were not) is not full prof the virus is still around unfortunately one of your family could have passed it on to your son and he has passed it to a teacher there is no way of knowing just social distancing, washing hands and wearing masks lessens the virus spreading

It’s some working environments it is impossible to keep to the socially distancing guidelines lines constantly when there are so many people about

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 15/11/2020 01:33

And of course many people who are meant to be self isolating are going out many are still working, walking their dogs and many simply can not afford not to work but not in the more comfortable world of many on MM

If all options are not accessible then what choice do people have

LovePoppy · 15/11/2020 01:34

@JingsMahBucket exactly this. Quite honestly, I am surprised that people aren’t keeping more in stock these days. The possibility to need to quarantine is no longer a surprise

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 15/11/2020 01:37

Well lots of people live week to week with their food shopping

There simply isn’t spare cash to buy extras

ineedaholidaynow · 15/11/2020 01:37

Do your teens’ mates have family living locally? Could they help you out? I know if my DS told me a mate’s family were isolating and struggling to get food I would help out
