Positive Covid test but we have no food in!

ViralVera · 15/11/2020 00:15

I got a text at 10pm tonight to say the DS is positive for CV. He hasn’t really had symptoms but THREE members at his SN college tested positive earlier this week so he was sent home to isolate and I wanted to make sure as DH is a keyworker. I really didn’t think it would be positive.

I’m bloody furious that staff have passed it onto vulnerable students. DS is classed as CEV so has been taught to be very good with hygiene but the staff haven’t been wearing masks, and didn’t seem to adhering to 2m social distancing at his induction session, but that’s another thread.

This means the whole household needs to isolate from now obviously but we are a family of 6 (adults) and get through a LOT of food so I shop every 2/3 days. The next big shop was due to be tomorrow!

The earliest online delivery I can get is for Wednesday and we literally only have milk, eggs, chips, meat and rice/pasta but not enough for 4 days. No squash/bread/cereal/yoghurts/fruit/veg etc.

There is literally no one local we can ask. DH’s brother lives an hour away but his family also has Covid (not from us as we haven’t seen them for months).

It’ll be a lot of shopping for a volunteer to get, if I can find one.

I’ve booked the other 5 of us for a drive in tests tomorrow so I was thinking about me and DH double masking and scooting round Tesco chucking stuff in trolleys as quickly as possible straight afterwards.

Should we? If we have it tomorrow, we had it today too!

Deliveroo does supermarket deliveries . You choose what you want from a restricted but reasonable list of basics usually from something like the the Coop, Budgens or Morrisons etc , whichever is near you and taking part in the scheme. The driver collects it for you, usually within an hour.

You need the deliveroo app, also the supermarket option only appears when they are open for orders.

That should get you through a few days until your online delivery arrives.

olderthanyouthink · 15/11/2020 00:47

Post on a local FB page, I'd help a family out by picking up some basics and dropping them on the door step if it was that or them risking other people's health

ineedaholidaynow · 15/11/2020 00:47

Why are the rest of you getting tests?

Around here there is a local COVID community group set up to help out in these situations. Also some local independent food shops are offering deliveries for people who are shielding/isolating. Get onto Facebook and see if you can find someone local who can help.

As others have said I am surprised with 6 adults in the house you don’t know anyone who could help

Constance1 · 15/11/2020 00:47

Agree with the pp, how can you be raging at one of the school staff possibly passing on the virus to your son (btw I'm sure if they did it wasn't on purpose!) but you are thinking about you AND your husband going to a supermarket. This level of hypocrisy is actually so ridiculous that it's funny.

On a practical note can you order some tins of stuff, dried food etc from Amazon on next day delivery to tide you overnight until you can get a click and collect/delivery slot?

caringcarer · 15/11/2020 00:48

I don't understand why you are all being tested. You need to isolate for 14 days.
Do a click and collect and get a volunteer to collect it for you. Or order a Morrisons food box. Don't go to Tesco that is irisponsible when you k is you must self isolate for 14 days.

LovePoppy · 15/11/2020 00:48

@Madein1995

I dont see what other options are availanle anyhow. Op isnt coughing her guts up and intending to go out sans mask dragging all the family with her! If theres no one available then there is no one available. Ringing local councillors, school mums and grasping at other straws is just too faffy, inconvenient and stressful.
Sure, but possibly passing covid along is totally cool?

Especially for someone raging that someone gave it to her son

Serin · 15/11/2020 00:49

Track and Trace will ring you tomorrow and ask if you need help to access food. They will arrange help if you need it depending on your circumstances.
They also keep ringing and checking.
Please do not go outside at all. To do so would be reckless and selfish.
Good luck and I hope you are among the majority of households who get it mildly.

Flukz1988 · 15/11/2020 00:49

This is disgusting. What a selfish human being you are. Blaming staff who are being made to work in a highly risky environment to care for your child and they unfortunately caught covid probably from people like you who are willing to walk around shops and risk everyone else's health. And then saying you're considering going into a shop where there will be vulnerable people. No wonder you don't have any friends who are willing to help you out. You can wait until Wednesday and just get take aways until then. As a parent in a pandemic you should be better prepared.

LittleRa · 15/11/2020 00:50

@Paddingtonjuice

Massively agree that OP should not go to the supermarket but there is no need to shame them did not having a friend to go shopping for them. Some people are in that situation through no fault of their own. Especially difficult if you have children with special needs. Some people ostracise you. Be kind. OP there will be so many people on your local Facebook sites that will help you x
Tell the OP to “be kind” about the college staff she’s “fucking raging” at for doing their jobs in very difficult circumstances.
ViralVera · 15/11/2020 00:52

DH works an 30 miles away so no colleagues nearby. I WFH now but office is in central London so also no local colleagues. Family miles away. None of the DC’s mates have cars. They are teens. Our neighbours are elderly. We have no local friends, only acquaintances, we’ve lived here for 4 years! It is very sad Sad.

The chances of us infecting anyone in Tesco in minuscule with masks on, no cough or sneezing, just by walking past themHmm. Unlike getting up close while working with vulnerable students with no masks on.

I didn’t know about Amazon. We have Prime. I’ll check it out. Thanks for that.

So you're 'furious at the staff for passing it on to vulnerable students', but yet you're contemplating going out to do a supermarket shop when you could have Covid yourself? You can rage as much as you like, but are you seriously willing to knowingly put other people at risk by going shopping? Pot, kettle, black.

Go on your local Facebook page, ring your local shops, etc. There's a lot of support available for people in your very situation right now, so make use of it instead of being a hypocrite.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 15/11/2020 00:53

Do you live somewhere very remote?

If not then there are solutions.

Book your Wednesday delivery for main shopping.

The Co-op will deliver within 3 hours if you ring up because you are isolating. Iceland will deliver. Our local greengrocer delivers and also has eggs, milk, cheese and yoghurts as well. TBH I'm surprised it hadn't occurred to a household of 6 adults that this might be a possibility during the last 9 months and have a bit of an idea of how you might handle it?

GhostTypeEevee · 15/11/2020 00:53

It shouldn't need to be said but please don't go to Tesco. The hypocrisy is astounding tbh.

Paddingtonjuice · 15/11/2020 00:55

She is asking first before doing so though isn’t she? We are all telling her no. Stop ripping people apart.

BlueOceanWave · 15/11/2020 00:55

Book the delivery slot with tesco if you can.

Do you have any friends or family nearby or nice neighbours that can help you in the mean time? You could text them a list of food and medicine stuff that you will need. They don't need to go into your home. They can leave a shopping bag or two outside your door.

If I lived near you and I would jump at the chance to help you.

ilikebooksandplants · 15/11/2020 00:56

You would be seriously unreasonable to go to the shop and you know it.

If your children have friends who are teenagers and could pick up some basics for you, they don’t need a car. Pay for a taxi for them.

Why are you ignoring most of the (very sensible) suggestions PP have given you and still insisting that you’re a low risk while bitching about the staff who work with your son?

Italiangreyhound · 15/11/2020 00:56

Might this help www.coop.co.uk/ways-to-shop/deliveroo

There are lots of organisations locally, including churches and charities that may be able to shop for you. Please ask. Just put the feelers out, especially if it's just bread, veg, cereal and fruit etc, which do not need refrigerating.

I know you also said yogurts but just thought focusing on the food that doesn't need refrigerating may be easier for people to deliver. They could shop for you on the way to work and drop off after work etc, if it was not items that needed to be chilled.

Good luck.

IgorThalia · 15/11/2020 00:56

So a family member who you live with has tested positive, you need to self isolate and you want to go to the shop? Can't you see how hypocritical that is? You know you can pass it on without showing symptoms don't you? Don't be mad at the school staff when you're knowingly putting members of your community at risk. Put a status on Facebook, call your local supermarkets, ask one of your colleagues who lives 30 miles away and tell them you'll pay for fuel, do ANYTHING just please don't go to the supermarket.

WeAllHaveWings · 15/11/2020 00:58

Hope you all stay well and get better soon, but there is no way you should be popping into tesco, regardless of how quick you will be.

I understand your anger, my mum caught covid in hospital, but you are totally out of order to blame staff at the school, you have no idea where your dc or they got it from.

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 15/11/2020 00:58

I’d shop for an acquaintance in your circumstances. Ask one of them. Or as others have said try Iceland, Morrison’s and Amazon. Some of the small shops here have been helpful with dropping enough food for a few days to people if you call and explain. Hope you get it sorted and that your son is ok.

You would be very unreasonable to go shopping. Especially together with your partner. Just ridiculous. Just ring the Covid support team for your area and let them get you the bits you need to tide you over until your next available delivery. Ffs

Italiangreyhound · 15/11/2020 00:59

Oh and a farm shop or local store may deliver, like a smaller store.

www.fwi.co.uk/farm-life/coronavirus-farm-shops-launch-home-delivery-services

Floralnomad · 15/11/2020 01:02

As you appeared to know that the covid precautions at the college were not adequate in your opinion why were you sending you child who is clinically vulnerable in ?

Time2change2 · 15/11/2020 01:02

@reginaphalangeeee

Not sure if it's already been mentioned, but do you get Amazon Prime Now? It's same day groceries from Amazon using Morrisons. You pick a 2 hour time slot.
This is only for some London postcodes though? I am in a densely populated area of the SE with a Morrison’s less than 3 miles away and my whole borough isn’t included in this!
