I can't stand ASMR

I'm amazed by how popular these ASMR videos have become on Youtube.

I find them irritating, and sometimes even creepy if they involve whispering. I hate all the fiddling, fidgeting, chewing etc. So horrible.

It's really interesting, I simple do not get the reaction you are supposed to get from any of the ones I have seen.

the whispering ones make me want to throw my phone across the room, horrible, horrible.

That dollar lady video makes me want to bang my head on the desk, he voice is SOOOO annoying.

I don't react like this in real life either! Very calm usually.

I do love some of the art video, I just like watching them, no physical reaction. I love some of the factory type ones where they show someone doing very clever like chopping a cucumber in 2 seconds into fancy shapes. I sometimes watch them before bed, because they are mindless not because they are giving me tingles.

Is everyone supposed to get it? Is it just about finding the right thing?

No, I don’t think everyone experiences ASMR. If you did, you would already know because you would have been triggered and experienced the reaction “in the wild”.

I’ve experienced it my whole life, from girls in school touching my hair and from watching people draw, but it didn’t have a name until a few years ago when the online community started.

Personally I can’t stand eating noises and whispering is neutral, but watching massage or hair brushing causes delightful ASMR and can have me asleep in minutes.

SurreyHillsGirl · 14/11/2020 13:54

ASMR is AMAZING and I feel genuinely sorry for people like you, OP, who don’t ‘get it’. I feel v fortunate that I was one of the ‘chosen ones’ Grin

ineedsun · 14/11/2020 13:57

Empath, misphonia, ASMR - all goes in the same category for me

BertieBotts · 14/11/2020 14:18

Surely if it makes some people tingle in a good way, it must be plausible that it can make people tingle in a horrible way? It's definitely like that for me. Feels like something is disturbing all my skin hairs.

I fully admit to being ridiculously oversensitive, though.

Onedropbeat · 14/11/2020 14:26

Can’t stand it

Fascinated by it, but hate it

JonasKahnwald · 14/11/2020 15:19

I love asmr and I have misophonia. I just mute the video. Easy 🤷‍♀️

MonroeM · 14/11/2020 15:27

Like another poster commented I too experienced ASMR many years ago but had no idea anyone else did or that it had a name. I suppose it didn't have a name back then!

Let me just say it is harmless, does wonders and is so beneficial for those who appreciate it and if you try it and it doesn't work for you then butt out of the ASMR channels. Many people are hooked on cooking shows and celebrity chef tripe (no pun intended there) but that is what I think of them, utter tripe. So I do not watch them!

lockitdown · 14/11/2020 15:29

Ive been addicted to ASMR for years. I actually think I have a problem!

steppemum · 14/11/2020 15:29

Is it the same if you get tingling when someone actually touches you?

or is it only if triggered by watching/hearing something?

If I have a head massage, then I get a similar thing, non sexual amazing feeling. But not from watching/viewing something

IaltagDhubh · 14/11/2020 16:45

Hate it. The whispery, tappy or chewing ones make me want throw my tablet across the room and the rip my skin off. Like PPs have said, fight or flight response. I also loathe anyone touching my hair or my face. Or actually touching me at all now I come to think about it.

I love the sound of rain or waves, or wind in the trees. No tingles, I just find it relaxing.

I do find that Andrew Scott’s voice does tingly things to me though, and not in a rude way! But when he delivers his lines in a particular way, I can feel it across my skin and down my back. I’ve no idea if that’s ASMR but it’s lovely.

Florelei · 14/11/2020 18:30

Love ASMR. I like Myaling, ASMRTherapist, LoveTodayASMR, Massage ASMR and Dr Gill.

Putapitofpaperonit. If you know you know....

lazylinguist · 14/11/2020 18:41

Yes of course the OP can choose not to watch them. That doesn't mean she's not allowed to give an opinion. Most of the opinion-based threads on MN are about things you can avoid if you want to! I expect a lot of people have heard about ASMR videos and how amazing loads of people say they are, so have looked them up and been really baffled and thought "Wtf?! These are really annoying!". I did exactly the same. And it's not just that they don't give me ASMR, they are actively annoying or even unpleasant.

woodlandwalker · 14/11/2020 18:47

I'd never heard of this and just looked it up on youtube. The first one that came up had whispering that made me feel like nails on a blackboard. It's just awful.

LimeLemonOrange · 16/11/2020 18:39

I can enjoy ASMR from certain sounds in real life, but the ASMR videos I've seen so far (not that many to be fair) don't do it for me at all.

I was quite disappointed when I read that it was a thing and that there were special videos... I thought some of them might trigger the nice feelings but they don't :-(
