I can't stand ASMR

I'm amazed by how popular these ASMR videos have become on Youtube.

I find them irritating, and sometimes even creepy if they involve whispering. I hate all the fiddling, fidgeting, chewing etc. So horrible.

@MaskingForIt

I hate videos about computer games. So I don’t watch them.

Seriously, if you don’t like them, put your phone down and go read a book or do some crochet or something!

Yes, but unfortunately this bollocks is everywhere and (as this thread proves), you're considered weird if you don't 'get it'. Its especially annoying that it's now bigger part of adverts (especially food/supermarket ones).
GuillermoVanHelsing · 13/11/2020 17:01

I love asmr whispering. Usually men because I prefer the deeper tone.

My kids HATE it- sometimes they'll approach me not realising I'm watching an asmr vid (because it's so quiet) then shrInk back when they hear like someone just pulled the curtains back on Dracula Grin

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2020 17:03

I haven't seen it 'everywhere' I have to say. I have never discussed it in RL, I wouldn't even know how to explain it and I am sure people would be Hmm (bit like this thread).

ButterflyBitch · 13/11/2020 17:06

Is ASMR just a reaction to noise/whispering/whatever sound?

dixiedo · 13/11/2020 17:08

I have never heard of it. I went on YouTube to look. Typed it in. First thing was woman in full makeup eating a pink hairbrush. 😐 came swiftly back here instead.

hollyandkit · 13/11/2020 17:09

@Sparklingbrook

I don't like the stroking hair whispery stuff. However I have found one I love. She's an American lady who goes into Dollar Tree (or other stores) and straightens up the shelves. Sounds terrible doesn't it? But it's so relaxing to watch and her voice is the best, if I can't sleep I watch some.

ASMR is very easily avoided though if it's not your thing don't go looking for it!

Yes, Mary from North Carolina - I love her!! Don't get ASMR but I love looking round huge American stores and seeing how much absolute crap they get in for Halloween and Christmas
GuillermoVanHelsing · 13/11/2020 17:09

I've experienced asmr all my life. It's just nowadays it's been given a title and people make videos on it.

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2020 17:26

Yes @hollyandkit she is great isn't she? I am not mad keen on her Aldi hauls but love the shelf tidying and her monologues about her neighbours. Plus she has nice cats.

nancybotwinbloom · 13/11/2020 17:32

Off to google ASMR...

Thickhead · 13/11/2020 17:35

If you don't experience ASMR then you won't get it. It's a specific physical sensation - not just a feeling of 'relaxation', although it is also incredibly relaxing - that only certain people get. Like synaesthesia.

Saying that, I absolutely can't stand any videos with chewing / mouth sounds, fast tapping of fingernails, etc. And yes, some of the videos are cringy or pervy. No getting around that.

EstuaryBird · 13/11/2020 17:36

@nancybotwinbloom

Off to google ASMR...
You are not alone.

They say you learn something new every day.....

kursaalflyer · 13/11/2020 17:37

Just watched a few on YouTube on the basis of this thread. Very weird! So watching 'Ting Ling' tap a couple of paintbrushes on a microphone and just wondered, does she make it up as she's going along? Has she spent time thinking a few more taps necessary etc? Does she try it out on friends before uploading it? Or is she having a right laugh? I can understand the massaging vids more but only if you are the one having the massage surely? I love my hairdresser giving me a head massage but I can't imagine getting the same feeling watching her do it to someone else. But different strokes for different folks I guess.
Here's Dollar Tree lady-
So glad she turned the Vaseline around. I thought she'd missed it.
Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2020 17:45

@Kolo she's very thorough. Grin She always tries to put items in the wrong place back where they live too. She used to work in a pharmacy so she is very knowledgeable about all the drugs too.

SingleHandSue · 13/11/2020 17:50
Here's Dollar Tree lady-
I need to watch this.

I used to be a supervisor in a small supermarket, at the end of the day I was supposed to cash up leaving my colleagues to face up the store.

I just couldn’t leave it for anyone else though! I enjoyed it way too much and practically skipped around the store when it was looking all perfect.

IheartASMR · 13/11/2020 17:52

I have experienced ASMR all my life but never knew that’s what it was until my teenage daughter showed me vids on YouTube!
Some of the videos are just like soft porn really, but they make money from it!
I like GentleWhispering but she has another blog channel called Sassy Masha and I find it fascinating! She is Russian but has lived in various places in the US and has talked about her life, how she came to the states, how she got into ASMR etc and she does little vlogs out and about and in the stores if you like that kind of thing, though it’s not specifically ASMR.
Latte is good too. She’s a bit lip-smacky which can be off putting but her videos and the effort she puts into them are amazing!

Kolo · 13/11/2020 17:56

I didn't know this had a name, just googled it. I do like a bit of SPORN, it makes me shiver.

But my fave thing is a hard to describe sensation, closest I can come is to say it's the sensation of having something small between the pads of your thumb and index finger. There's something on fb called Tiny Kitchen that gives me this sensation when I watch.

jambeforeclottedcream · 13/11/2020 17:58

ASMR is one of those things where you either get tingles etc. and so get it . Or you don't

There's no bu about it. You either do or you don't.

ChocolateCherrybomb · 13/11/2020 17:58

I went looking after hearing about ASMR a while back.

Some of them made me feel murderous rage.

The eating ones made me feel sick both from the visual and auditory aspects.

I absolutely hate whispering.

Not for me so I leave it alone.

iklboogeymum · 13/11/2020 18:01

I can't hear well at the best of times without all the bleeding whispering. I like having my hair washed but all the other stuff is just annoying to me. Meh. Each to their own.

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2020 18:02

Not all ASMR features whispering.

SingleHandSue · 13/11/2020 18:02
Here's Dollar Tree lady-
I’ve just watched a bit of this, I so want my old job back, I miss doing this so much!!
billydilly · 13/11/2020 18:04

Gentle Whispering is a goddess. Her towel folding vids, ahhh....

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2020 18:06

@SingleHandSue if there wasn't a pandemic on you might get away with it in Superdrug or Boots maybe. She says nobody has ever asked her what she's doing-they must be very happy with her work. She hasn't done the shelf tidying since COVID appeared.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 13/11/2020 18:07

I like asmr , but only if it’s in person, like having my hair brushed or backs of fingernails along the inside of my arm. We used to draw on each other’s backs when sitting on the mat at school, that’s proper shivery. Most of the filmed stuff does nothing. There’s a tapping on headphones over a Mike that’s ok. But all that pretend Beauty therapist stuff? No thanks.
