I can't stand ASMR

I'm amazed by how popular these ASMR videos have become on Youtube.

I find them irritating, and sometimes even creepy if they involve whispering. I hate all the fiddling, fidgeting, chewing etc. So horrible.

I don't like the stroking hair whispery stuff. However I have found one I love. She's an American lady who goes into Dollar Tree (or other stores) and straightens up the shelves. Sounds terrible doesn't it? But it's so relaxing to watch and her voice is the best, if I can't sleep I watch some.

I think thats Southern ASMR.I love her.Her unpacking videos are great.

Yes-Mary. I love her too, her shelf tidying is the best.

I only get it if it's accidental, I find most of it is too try hard. Tapping on objects for ages just seems daft. I remember sharing books at school in English class with my friend and she used to curl the edge of the pages while we followed what the teacher was reading and the noise it made was heaven.

MaskingForIt · 13/11/2020 18:13

@Shaniac

I hate videos about computer games. So I don’t watch them.

Seriously, if you don’t like them, put your phone down and go read a book or do some crochet or something!

Unhelpful. ASMR has crept into pop culture so it makes sense we have looked it up and formed a negative opinion on something everyone else seems to love.

ASMR is a feeling, and feelings have not crept into popular culture.

If you don’t feel ASMR from an advert with whispering, it isn’t “ASMR”, it’s a whispering video.

Fair enough checking out a few videos to see if it triggers for you (but really, if it could, you’d already know), but feeling a “murderous rage” is ridiculous - just don’t want them!

I don’t like Instagram influencers so - while I am aware of their existence and sometimes see adverts featuring them - I don’t look at them on Instagram. There’s no need to yuk on someone else’s yum just because you don’t like it.

I don't experience ASMR and I really can't stand it.

Obviously because I don't experience it I don't know what it feels like as previous posters have said .....but the other side of it is that those who do experience it don't understand how horrible and creepy some of those videos and sounds for the rest of us lol

I've seen/heard a lot randomly when I haven't sought them out, it's not simply a case of saying I don't get that at all, it's that the actual sounds are horrible and creepy to listen to.

CuppaZa · 13/11/2020 18:15

YABU. It’s just not your thing. Move on quietly

yelyah22 · 13/11/2020 18:16

Don't watch ASMR videos then? :)

I get it, but only very specific things - none of the videos filmed to be intentional ASMR work for me. But a soothing-voiced lecturer filmed 30 years ago talking about an obscure bit of foreign policy or anthropology or something? Makes my entire body feel like the ReadyBrek advert.

QueenOfPain · 13/11/2020 18:16

Another big fan of GentleWhispering here. Also love Olesya who is ASMR Tingle Play (username is a bit cringe).

Female Russian voices are asmr gold.

Atmosphere ASMR is another amazing channel, the work and production that has gone into her videos is crazy, she’s creating her own story universe. My favourites are still her videos about a little old dressmakers shop; the sewing machine sound, cutting and pinning fabric, and the back ground noises of things happening nearby are magical.

fantasmasgoria1 · 13/11/2020 18:16

I have had the feeling gained by asmr many times over the years. I have not really watched much asmr but I have preferred craft related stuff. Folding paper, leafing through paper or plastic etc. I took a look at the dollar tree lady and thought she was OK.

BorderlineHappy · 13/11/2020 18:17

I do overdose sometimes and i find they dont work.

But shes good,
But the unintentional ASMR channel is great.

Shaniac · 13/11/2020 18:18

ASMR is a feeling, and feelings have not crept into popular culture.

It absolutely has crept into pop culture hence the millions of youtube videos making money out of it. Thats pop culture.

Fair enough checking out a few videos to see if it triggers for you (but really, if it could, you’d already know), but feeling a “murderous rage” is ridiculous - just don’t want them!

Im not the only person who lives in my flat and uses the tv. Sometimes dp will see something and put it on. Goody for you if you enjoy it but some of us it provokes really nasty emotions and we are absolutely free to discuss that as you are to start a thread on how much you love it.

Tigger03 · 13/11/2020 18:19

@OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow exactly the same here. Also as a kid playing hairdressers gave me massive tingles.

Although I was on a work webinar the other day and the presenter had a great voice and that set me off - felt a bit wrong at work!

Shaniac · 13/11/2020 18:19

Ok i totally understand what another pp meant by ASMR fans being defensive Grin

thisisnotus · 13/11/2020 18:23

Wait what.... people watch half hour videos of a woman straightening products on shelves in dollar tree? Okaaaaayyy.... 😂
This is clearly not my place or my people. As you were 😁

Margotshypotheticaldog · 13/11/2020 18:25

I have never heard of this, but I definitely have it/get it!!!! I didn't realise it was a thing.
There was a thread a while ago mentioning a feeling some get from Billie Eilish's voice and I totally identified. Also Norwegian(?) singer Stina Nordenstam. Sort of like being turned inside out and tickled all over.... But in a good way. Do singers count? I used to get it from the Black and decker add as a child. Blackanddeckerblackanddeckerblackanddecker ☺️ That lady straightening shelves is awesome!

Wait what yes they do. I find it relaxing if I can't sleep. Smile Insomnia is horrible.
QueenOfPain · 13/11/2020 18:28

I used to get it in the hairdressers when I was little. My dad used to take me with him when he got his hair cut, and then hairdresser would always plait my hair afterwards and let me choose what coloured bobble I wanted put in it. Always got ASMR when she plaited my hair.

Other things have triggered it over the years too, unexpectedly. Certain accents and voices when talking to call centres, for example.

It’s only the last ten years or so where I’ve realised it’s something that happens to other people too, and not just a weird thing I get. I feel better for knowing it happens to other people.

jennie0412 · 13/11/2020 18:29

My favourite is Ppomo Asmr Smile
My favourite 'type' of asmr are the ones with the 3dio. My favourite trigger is hard to find thoughSad

Margotshypotheticaldog · 13/11/2020 18:36

I thought everyone got it actually. I guess it makes sense that everyone hears /feels it, but some love it and some hate it.

Foodroofandfamily · 13/11/2020 18:38

Wizzywig... totally agree

GuillermoVanHelsing · 13/11/2020 18:40

I used work in a video shop when I was a teen. Every weekend, a certain couple would come in to rent a film, and I would always take that moment to put some empty cases back on the shelves, so I could listen to the man talk as they browsed. It was the combination of his deep voice and the fact that they were talking softly. I would almost fall into a trance.

Absolutely nothing fanciable about him to me btw!

2020iscancelled · 13/11/2020 18:41

I dont like the whispering or sounds - that’s definitely not for me and does nothing but make me feel creeped out.

But I love the visual ones such as hair brushing and massage and back scratching etc.

I’m actually quite pleased it’s a thing now bc I’ve always wondered why when I watched people having their hair done I went all goosepimply. Now I know it’s a genuine thing and lots of people get it.

The thing is, if you don’t experience it then you can’t really enjoy it can you. I suppose it’s like not enjoying chocolate, the whole table could be sat throughly enjoying a big beautiful chocolate cake but if you don’t like chocolate well it’s completely lost on you and you’d be turning your nose up at it.

We like what we like I guess.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 13/11/2020 18:41

It's weird.
I often find it hard to get to sleep, so thought I'd give it a go. Tried loads before I found one with a voice that wasn't too irritating.
The woman blurted on and on about hand massage and maybe a manicure.
Made my hands feel dry and itchy. By the time I'd got up, washed my hands, slathered them in oil and cream, made a cup of tea and gone back to bed, thankfully she'd shut up.

Isitsixoclockalready · 13/11/2020 18:42

Surely it’s one of the few things in life that you literally can avoid easily and remain totally unaffected by? I can see the benefits though as if you can find something to relax you in these stressful times that doesn’t involve mind altering substances then why not?

thisisnotus · 13/11/2020 18:45

Well I never.

I have misophonia (food and mouth noises). I've had a (positive) scalp-tingling sensation in response to sounds (specifically, singing) a couple of times. But I don't think I've experienced what you're describing here, not in response to anything auditory or visual. But touch, yes - e.g. my hair, or a back rub / massage etc. I don't think that sounds like the same thing though.
