I can't stand ASMR

I'm amazed by how popular these ASMR videos have become on Youtube.

I find them irritating, and sometimes even creepy if they involve whispering. I hate all the fiddling, fidgeting, chewing etc. So horrible.

I love ASMR. Itsblitzzz is my all time fav!

Tomcullenisahero · 13/11/2020 19:44

Ive never heard of this before, just googled it! Im not keen on the whispering ones, I feel like she's going to shout BOO loudly at any second and scare the bejeezus out of me. Some of the other videos are quite relaxing.

Lucyccfc68 · 13/11/2020 19:44

My teen DS swears by ASMR to help him relax and get him off to sleep. I had to google and check it wasn’t some weirdo’s sending subconscious grooming messages lol.

He wears headphones and loves how the sounds travel across his head from one ear to the other and back again and he says they give him tingly skin. He likes ones with brushing, popping and tapping sounds.

I have listened to some and they do nothing for me personally, but he really likes it.

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2020 19:46

@Chicchicchicchiclana

Heh heh, I don't even know what AMSR is. I'm getting the gist from reading through the thread. What a load of old shite anyone can post on the internet and get a following eh? If I had no self respect I might even give it a go myself.
I know what you mean but it works for my insomnia so I'm keeping it and my self respect. Grin
Magicbabywaves · 13/11/2020 19:57

I don’t understand, you get the feeling of goosebumps from watching someone do something, the same feeling as if they were stroking your head? Or similar. I don’t have that at all. I also can’t bear whispering, it makes me angry.

YonderTweek · 13/11/2020 20:02

I like it and I totally get the tingles. I always wondered what these odd enjoyable feelings were when I was watching the teacher wipe the blackboard when I was a kid. Grin I think it's pretty harmless and a major bonus if it helps people sleep. I'm not into the sexualised stuff and find it really cringe, but a well made ASMR video can be really enjoyable to me. (It does make me feel like a proper weirdo though. Blush)

iklboogeymum · 13/11/2020 20:07

@Wrenna - I definitely prefer nature sounds - rain, thunderstorms, wind in the trees, wave sounds etc.

I had very long hair when I was younger and hated people playing with it. I used to get really annoyed.

noirchatsdeux · 13/11/2020 20:09

I hate chewing gum, think it's disgusting stuff and should be banned.

The only thing that gives me the AMSR 'tingles' is the sound of someone chewing gum. I've been experiencing that since I was about 14 - I'm 52, so long before the AMSR label became popular.

None of the other videos do it for me. It's weird what your body can respond to.

DryRoastPeanut · 13/11/2020 20:12

And? Your point is...?

Did you think you’d enjoy absolutely everything in life?
Some people love white knuckle rides, some people love knitting!

It’s not obligatory to like everything all the time.

Propercrimboselecta · 13/11/2020 20:12

I wouldn't ever be able to sleep if it wasn't for ASMR.
I prefer fast and aggressive ASMR (sounds creepy when I write it down) where people talk normally and aren't all slow about their movements, just do normal stuff that happens to be a trigger for me. E.g. I was in a work meeting a while back and whilst talking at a normal level, somebody was drumming their acrylics on the table quite quickly. I could have gone to sleep!

Propercrimboselecta · 13/11/2020 20:15

Chicchicchicchiclana

It's actually really helpful if you struggle to switch off, relax, or sleep.

I was struggling with my mental health during lockdown and became depressed, the only way I could sleep at all was from watching ASMR videos.

I don’t like this
AmarillobyMorning · 13/11/2020 20:17

I love them, really helps calm and relax me.

Smellbellina · 13/11/2020 20:19

Oh God the whispering ones are horrifying

DrFoxtrot · 13/11/2020 20:25

Certain parts of songs give me a tingle, but I can't stand whispering, Billie Eilish's voice or any of the meditation narrators on Calm or Headspace. In fact, I absolutely hate listening to spoken word and never listen to podcasts, etc.

I do like videos of factories with repetitive movements and conveyor belts though Grin. And sporn.

Wide · 13/11/2020 20:30

Omfg i love asmr started as a child id feel relaxed at random things and noe ive actually found youtube videos of it people whispering and tapping keyboards, amazing

zukiecat · 13/11/2020 20:30

I've had ASMR since I was a very young child, I just didn't understand what it was.

@wizzywig That's quite offensive, if you don't believe in it fine, just don't insult those who do.

No one is forcing anybody to watch the videos

CharityRoyall · 13/11/2020 20:30

YANBU! It gives me a full body shiver but not in a good way? It makes me feel angry 😂

Notjustanymum · 13/11/2020 20:34

I only recently realised that I experience ASMR and have done so from childhood, and can trigger it to calm myself in stressful situations.
It always starts at the nape of my neck and I did wonder if it’s a residual reflex similar to a dog shaking itself. I was astonished to find out that whispers can trigger it, since I can decide when to trigger it myself.
Does anyone have any answers about this theory of residual reflexes?

zukiecat · 13/11/2020 20:37

@Chicchicchicchiclana

You obviously don't get it.

I'm 53 and have had ASMR since about age 4, so long long before it was given a name.

You don't experience it so it must be made up? Hmm

MaskingForIt · 13/11/2020 20:44

@Kolo

Ok now I'm confused. I thought everyone got the tingles with hair-doing or upper arm stroking. Is that ASMR? Omg love having my hair played with. And not in a sex way. It just makes me shiver.
No, as evidenced by the haters on this thread, some people are tingle-free.

We are a very luck minority!

zukiecat · 13/11/2020 20:48

@MaskingForIt

I adore my hair being played with, not in any sexual way either. My granny used to do it for me and now DD does.

It's one of the nicest, most relaxing things ever!

Flavabobble · 13/11/2020 21:02

*ASMR is one of those things where you either get tingles etc. and so get it . Or you don't

There's no bu about it. You either do or you don't*

I disagree. I love watching carpet cleaning videos, car washing, and carpentry. I find them deeply relaxing and calming.
But the hair brushing, whispery ones creep me the fuck out.
The cookery ones where they bang pots about really irritate me.

BorderlineHappy · 13/11/2020 21:05

I used to bribe my kids to brush my hair.Loved it so much.

I remember going to a hairdresser last year. She had lovely nails and was real gentle and she whispered.

I swear i was nearly asleep a few times.

Kolo · 13/11/2020 21:05

@MaskingForIt this is a revelation. I'm in shock that there are people who don't like their hair played with. I thought that's why hair salons started doing the head massage thingy when they shampoo your hair. I can still remember that tingly enjoyment that you'd get at school when the girl sat on the carpet behind you would plait your hair.
