I can't stand ASMR

I'm amazed by how popular these ASMR videos have become on Youtube.

I find them irritating, and sometimes even creepy if they involve whispering. I hate all the fiddling, fidgeting, chewing etc. So horrible.

I adore my hair being played with, not in any sexual way either. My granny used to do it for me and now DD does.

I've only got boys. I bloody love them but they refuse to do my hair.

ZoeTurtle · 13/11/2020 21:13

If only there was a way to not watch ASMR videos...

FuckYouCorona · 13/11/2020 21:46

Confused WTAF? Hmm

Shaniac · 13/11/2020 22:05

@kolo come round mine i love playing with peoples hair and doing scalp massages could do it all day haha just stay away from my head or i will cry Halloween Grin

Anon778833 · 13/11/2020 22:10

I love it. I'm autistic and it's actually one of my coping mechanisms in life that relaxes me.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 13/11/2020 22:27

Eek I just looked up gentle whispering on you tube and got the rage within the first few seconds. Horrible!

SingleHandSue · 13/11/2020 23:28

I’m another who loves my hair being played with. I used to play hairdressers with DS2 when he was little just so I could get him to brush it and put clips and things in it.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 13/11/2020 23:37

@museumum

The whisper ones do give me tingles but in a bad way - like the feeling people mean when they talk about nails on blackboards (although that doesn’t bother me much).
Yes! I said exactly this on another thread where ASMR was mentioned as something people use to help them sleep. I had to Google what it was and watched a few bits of a video and hated it. The whispering was so incredibly irritating - partly because I was annoyed that I couldn't properly hear her, partly because the loud sound of her lips meeting was just horrendous, and partly because it just made me get the nails down the nails down the blackboard feeling. I assume that isn't how it's supposed to make me feel. There was also rubbing something against a microphone, which was irritating, and her waving her hands around which just looked daft.
Clevererthanyou · 13/11/2020 23:45

It’s TingTing, and her “Wercome back” is glorious. You’ve clearly never visited her Chinese Herbal Remedy shop as the sound of rice, seeds, sugar, whatever tipping into bowls and packets is luverly Smile

MustardMitt · 13/11/2020 23:47

I hate it too. I do get the ASMR sensation from some music but the videos that are supposed to do it are horrible!

Clevererthanyou · 13/11/2020 23:51

The one ASMRtist(?) that does make my teeth grind is the nice Canadian boy who makes ‘mouth sounds’, Sad the queasy factor is strong in that one.

HaveeeeYouMetTed · 13/11/2020 23:55

I really dislike the whispering ones. I find them a bit creepy.

But sounds of cutting up sand is so relaxing!

Time2change2 · 14/11/2020 00:08

I love certain videos and have had asmr all my life but only realised others got it a few years ago! I’m so glad it’s been given a name

Crapbuttrue · 14/11/2020 00:17

Can anyone recommend good asmr videos just to LISTEN to or podcasts, I prefer to have my eyes closed. Some videos are ok others are a lot more visual..

HeIsAVeryBadBoy · 14/11/2020 00:22

Have only read half the thread so apologies if I'm repeating what somebody else has said but... I read before that misophonics are triggered (in a bad way) by asmr videos so it's not for us. It's for people who are the opposite to us in that respect.

I looked it up and can confirm. Made me want to smash the house up.

MonroeM · 14/11/2020 01:47

TingTing is my favourite and Asmrmania is a close second. Many of these ladies put a huge amount of effort and preparation into their videos and I believe some of them make a very good living out of it.

I have tried many and some leave me cold but the above mentioned are in my opinion top class at what they do. Each to their own, it is not for everyone.

I do have a complaint though. I have found a few where the ladies do far too much teasing and flirting in a sexual way. That is not what it is supposed to be about and it annoys me so I switch them off.

LioneIRichTea · 14/11/2020 09:52

I hated all ASMR too, found the whispering annoying, the tapping irritating etc. Then I watched a head massage one and then I got it. It’s like someone is massaging my head, I get the same feelings, very odd.

ThousandsAreSailing · 14/11/2020 09:59

I've experienced it all my life but only recently found it has been given a name
It's hard to explain but it kind of makes little pops in my brain and I feel totally relaxed
The videos rarely tap into mine. I don't like voices or whispering
I thought I loved massages but it's the masseur walking softly, mixing the oils or creams and hand washing that I love
Footsteps on cobbles. Train sounds. Rain on a tent or car
I remember as a very young child listening to my Grandad in his workshop making things out of wood. I would just stand at the door and listen, perhaps that's where it came from

Kolo · 14/11/2020 10:19

Absolutely. It's a deal. 😂

Harrietf21 · 14/11/2020 10:27

I can't stand these videos either, they give me incredible misophonia, like a physical panicky revulsion. I get that people love them and that's great, just seems to produce the opposite response in me.

Particularly whispering. I can't watch those Secret Escapes adverts that used to be on. Maybe because whispering is meant to be quiet or only partially audible, so hearing it amplified to normal speaking volume is a bit uncanny valley?

But I actually don't think you can avoid this stuff. There seems to be an assumption that even those who don't get an actual ASMR response will still find these clicky, whispery, breathy sounds relaxing rather than excruciating. This thread is mainly people talking about how much they love it, maybe most the majority are neutral or positive about it?

So it seems to have become a trend: food adverts, music, podcast adverts, meditation apps, anything that contains audio seems to be an opportunity for this 'soothing' whispery bullshit that makes a sizable minority of people want to peel their own skin off.

It genuinely distresses me when I'm listening to a podcast and they drop in some horrible ASMR ad as a 'treat' because everyone loves it right? I don't expect popular culture to revolve around my preferences but I think those of us who find this stuff really unpleasant are entitled to a moan now that it is becoming more pervasive.

(I also just remembered, those acapella groups were they beat box and hum the instrumental sounds are TORTURE and should come with an actual trigger warning for tragic misophonic snowflakes like me!)

StCharlotte · 14/11/2020 10:47

I almost have misophonia regarding how "things" (not voices) sound when played on the phone. It sets my teeth on edge. People typing on keyboards and the noise of a golf crowd clapping on TV make me want to kill.

But I adore Renee Zellwegger's voice, especially in Chicago.

Also I had a razor cut a couple of weeks ago and the feel of it and the scrinch scrinch noise was delicious.

Not sure there was any tingling but it makes you feel good does it count as ASMR?

Duckwit · 14/11/2020 11:00

I hate the whispering ones, especially when they are role play. Like, you don't go to the hairdressers or doctors and they whisper at you. However, I love the realistic softly spoken ones, and also unintentional ASMR of medical checkups, measuring for clothes etc. My absolute favourite is still Dr Hill, his videos are awesome, although he has now cottoned on to his ASMR following!

There is definitely a bit of a crossover with sexually explicit stuff now though, I have noticed a few women (of course Hmm now linking to Only Fans style pages.

Duckwit · 14/11/2020 11:01

Dr Gill, not Dr Hill!

StCharlotte · 14/11/2020 11:02

I think that's a bit of a generalisation. There are certain noises that bring it on I think.

I watched a couple of the clips. The shelf-straightening woman had no effect at all - postive or negative - but the woman with the candles and coloured matches made me want to smash the house up.

BorderlineHappy · 14/11/2020 11:30

I dont like the ones where to use the furry microphones and grooom them. For want of a better word.

Some of the eating ones make me feel a bit sick. But that more about the volume of food they consume.
