Dear Haters

Buttonitboris · 03/11/2020 21:48

Is it just me or are other Mumsnetters being bombarded with ads, on this site, from the Scottish Government entitled 'Dear Haters' followed by we won't stand for transphobia, race hate crimes etc. I am unreasonable in finding it deeply offensive to be addressed as Dear Hater and do Mumsnet HQ feel it appropriate that users are addressed in this way?

Are these ads appearing elsewhere or is this an attempt by the Scottish Government to shut down debate on this site regarding trans/women's rights?

@Quaagars

Agree with the nasty things grow more poisonous if kept underground, it's a hard one because on the other hand if they're kept underground, not given a platform, they're only really all shouting hate at each other and not radicalising / inciting hatred out in the open
Surely the last few years have shown those groups grow when you block them from being heard. When someone has contact with them they only hear one side no counter arguments. People who have any contact are more easily convinced that a "them" is controlling the press for nefarious purposes.

Time and time again we see that officialdom hiding opinions they wish people didn't have does not make those ideas die off. Quite the opposite.

Quaagars · 04/11/2020 13:24

Can you actually go back and read what I'm actually saying?!
You don't seem to be able to distinguish between several different points that have been brought up and that was I answering!

Quaagars · 04/11/2020 13:25

Sorry that was to curious

True
As I said, it's a hard one - whatever you do it's all just a toxic mess Sad

It's like Kafka. If you object to something, you admit your guilt

Exactly.

If people cannot see the issue with this, especially from a government body, I would recommend reading more history of propaganda and control of ideas and free speech.

Then try substituting abortion (aka reproductive rights), collusion (aka failure to snitch on your neighbour), irresponsible parents (aka single parents), secrecy (aka privacy), for the terms you currently agree with.

Odd you can see it when you think someone else is doing it to you but cannot see it when you do it... despite having it pointed out to you!

Maybe reconsider some of the repsonses you gave, some of the points you slightly twisted and the misdirections you applied.

OP asked a specific question. Most pp have answered that specific question. But you persist in bringing in all sorts of other tangential things ... and continue to refuse to engage directly with any question asked of you, yes, you specifically!

MaudTheInvincible · 04/11/2020 13:33

It would be a start if instead of putting out puerile ads, the SG actually worked to engage as many people as possible and ensuring that everyone felt listened to and fairly treated.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 04/11/2020 13:34

Given the latest ministerial output I really can't see that happening any time soon! And that they are doing this in the name of inclusion, fairness etc is mind boggling!

War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength.

ArabellaScott · 04/11/2020 14:17

I wonder if it's worth making a complaint to the ASA? Divisive, insulting and inflammatory language. I wonder if it counts as hate speech itself, calling somebody a hater is highly offensive. I wonder if we can see how they have targeted these ads? FOI? If they've targeted them at, say, women, who are protected under the Equality Act, would that count as hate speech? I would so dearly love to see this campaign hoisted by its own petard.

MichelleofzeResistance · 04/11/2020 14:18

Quite.

I think tying the accused up, throwing them in a pond and then killing them if they float was probably quicker, and was based on the same basic idea. I do wonder where Scotland intend to put their ReEducation Gulags. How about stocks where the accused can be put in public spaces and have things thrown at them by the righteously virtue signalling? I'm staggered that hasn't been in a manifesto yet.

OneTC · 04/11/2020 14:21

I get BMX adverts 😎

Siameasy · 04/11/2020 14:25

If you haven’t watched The Social Dilemma you might find it interesting. It scratches the surface really but always keep your critical thinking head on and ask questions

Define haters
Define transphobic
Define trans (Mermaids can’t)

“Increased surveillance is the price we pay for freedom”.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 04/11/2020 14:29

OK. You can all stop with the White Pyramid of Truth!

I have remembered my place!

Siameasy · 04/11/2020 14:50

I can imagine the circular logic at work
What’s a hater? Well if you have to ask...
Am I a hater? What do YOU think; are you?
How do I know if I’m a hater? Don’t worry, we will tell you

Could you post a screenshot OP?

Al77 · 04/11/2020 15:08

My message above was deleted for including a link to For women Scotland. I have sent them a link to this thread. They are legally contesting the definition of "woman" in the Gender Representation on Public Boards (Scotland) Act 2018 which they believe is outside the legislative competency of the Scottish Parliament under the Scotland Act 1998 and in contravention of the Scottish Ministers' duties under equality legislation.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 04/11/2020 15:13

I did wonder!

There may have been a similar deletion to a similar organisation a while ago... something on there bothered a someone! Twas a tad inexplicable!

GCAcademic · 04/11/2020 15:19

Wait, what? We’re not allowed to link to For Women Scotland? Why not?

dworky · 04/11/2020 15:21

@SpeccyLime

If you aren’t transphobic / sexist / racist / ableist etc then it’s not aimed at you, is it?
Not been paying attention, have you?
CuriousaboutSamphire · 04/11/2020 15:25

I'm trying to find the other thread - FWR Chat somewhere relatively recently!
Horehound · 04/11/2020 15:27

Yep I've seen two.

Go for it, Arabella. Transparency is important.
