Dear Haters

Is it just me or are other Mumsnetters being bombarded with ads, on this site, from the Scottish Government entitled 'Dear Haters' followed by we won't stand for transphobia, race hate crimes etc. I am unreasonable in finding it deeply offensive to be addressed as Dear Hater and do Mumsnet HQ feel it appropriate that users are addressed in this way?

Are these ads appearing elsewhere or is this an attempt by the Scottish Government to shut down debate on this site regarding trans/women's rights?

If you're offended by being called a hater then that's because you offend minorities so I'd like to think MN and the government dont care that you're offended.

If you have the right to be racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, islamophobic, or whatever vile thing. Then the rest of us have the right to our opinion that you're not a very nice person. And you're still getting off the lightest.

If you're not any of those things and dont share their views then the ads not addressed to you is it? It's an ad on a website, hardly the same as a letter through your door.

flaviaritt · 04/11/2020 07:55

Are you a 'hater'? If you aren't then you can reasonably assume that you are not part of the intended target audience. Just as I would do if I saw an ad that read 'Dear Mothers' or 'Dear Arsenal supporters'.

It doesn’t matter who they are targeting. A ‘hater’ is not a thing defined in Scottish law and the government needs to retract such ridiculous advertising. They are elected by voters and as such, will have to stand for whatever the voters think.

KnightsofColumbusThatHurt · 04/11/2020 07:58

What is a 'hater', according to the Scottish government I wonder?

Cabinfever10 · 04/11/2020 08:03

Unfortunately this is another disgusting Scottish government campaign around the new hate crime bill that makes thoughts a crime and saying that a biological man cannot become a biological woman will be a hate crime

BawJaws · 04/11/2020 08:05

Obviously a Typo @KnightsofColumbusThatHurt

Everybody knows the real spelling in Haterz... obviously that’s you if you step out of line even for a second.

Funny how women haterz don’t seem to get much trouble from the woke isn’t it?

I don’t see them all screaming about the fact that we are virtually disposable according to the justice system.

Lis4Laughter · 04/11/2020 08:05

It's very 1084 isn't it.

Nousernameforme · 04/11/2020 08:08

"Hater" always makes the speaker sound like they are 15 and having a bit of a tantrum.

Quaagars · 04/11/2020 08:29

.Not got that ad here.
Ads are usually tailored to your browsing history.
I am unreasonable in finding it deeply offensive to be addressed as Dear Hater
Why are you taking it so personally?
If you're not being hateful, then they're not referring to you then, are they?

Mochudubh · 04/11/2020 08:34

@Buttonitboris

Other sites I browse include BBC News, the Guardian and the village school website, and amazon, none a hotbed of hatred.
I more or less browse the same, plus the Herald and the local paper. I'm not getting these ads, just ones for tacky personalised jewellery and Audi (I drive a 15 year old Focus).
SpeccyLime · 04/11/2020 08:35

You are not being targeted by the Scottish government. Those ads are all over our buses and billboards too. They’re in reference to the ‘One Scotland’ campaign which targets hate crime.

The adverts are likely cropping up on your page because your browsing history shows you have an interest in stories about equality. It does not mean you, personally, are being addressed as a hater any more than Doris is when she gets a number 8 bus down Newington Road in Edinburgh.

You’re being paranoid.

flaviaritt · 04/11/2020 08:41

It does not mean you, personally, are being addressed as a hater any more than Doris is when she gets a number 8 bus down Newington Road in Edinburgh.

Nobody should be being addressed as a hater by their government. It is condescending, vague and unprofessional. The idea is underpinned by increasingly authoritarian legislation emanating from a government that thinks it can tell people what to think.

IDontMindMarmite · 04/11/2020 08:43

While I don't think you are being targeted, as others have said, because you've shown an interest in equality stories the algorithm will have picked up on that.

However, the language is ridiculous from a government. It'll just piss people off, true racists, bigots etc won't identify themselves in response, it's dogmatic and divisive.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 04/11/2020 08:48

My ads are all for things I have no interest in and have never searched.

Calling people haters is juvenile in the extreme and I should be able to expect better of a bloody government ffs.

Quaagars · 04/11/2020 08:52

It'll just piss people off, true racists, bigots etc won't identify themselves

Very true - you'll just get stuff like "define hater" or fingers in their ears when pointed out to them.
Then they'll carry on doing the exact same thing they've always done, but they'll carry on thinking it's THEM that's the victim/put upon Confused
I think honestly half the time it's not a case of being able to identify themselves, I think they genuinely can't see it.

Quaagars · 04/11/2020 08:53

Although haters is a bit teenage word I have to admit lol
Got people taking notice though, hasn't it?
Maybe that was the aim and it's worked

AuldSpookySewers · 04/11/2020 08:53

A ‘hater’. WTF is that meant to mean?
Are these ad agencies being run by pre-pubescent 12 year olds?

If I saw something like that I’d just roll my eyes and then ignore it because it’s clearly very childish and simplistic. Probably aimed at the sort of person who votes for Trump/Boris.

romeolovedjulliet · 04/11/2020 08:54

sorry, but personally i couldn't give a toss if this was aimed at me, and certainly not if it was government origin, they can fuck right off.
i'm allowed my own opinions on subjects including trans, you either agree or you don't. i don't, pick the bones out of that any parliament.

senua · 04/11/2020 08:54

Nobody should be being addressed as a hater by their government. It is condescending, vague and unprofessional.
And puerile. And stupid - you know that saying about "when you point one finger, you have the rest of your fingers pointing back at yourself", that's precisely what the Scottish Government are doing. They are saying that they hate their voters people.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 04/11/2020 08:57

Is it same like in 2018?

TheKeatingFive · 04/11/2020 08:57

I haven’t seen them.

If they think that approach will win people to their cause, they ... haven’t the first clue how to shift opinion.

It’s worrying that their advertising agency has so little understanding of the basics of their job.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 04/11/2020 08:58

I have, for unknown reasons to me ads for pathology week😂

TheKeatingFive · 04/11/2020 08:58

Are these ad agencies being run by pre-pubescent 12 year olds?

I do sometimes wonder. And I deal with them professionally.

AldiIsla · 04/11/2020 08:58

The SNP is very teenage.
They've had a purge, they're now sliding the danger haired worked into place.
One of their lot called women who want women's spaces cunts.

What else do you expect from the "One People, One Scotland, One Sturgeon!" style of government?
