Dear Haters

Buttonitboris · 03/11/2020 21:48

Is it just me or are other Mumsnetters being bombarded with ads, on this site, from the Scottish Government entitled 'Dear Haters' followed by we won't stand for transphobia, race hate crimes etc. I am unreasonable in finding it deeply offensive to be addressed as Dear Hater and do Mumsnet HQ feel it appropriate that users are addressed in this way?

Are these ads appearing elsewhere or is this an attempt by the Scottish Government to shut down debate on this site regarding trans/women's rights?

@AldiIsla

The SNP is very teenage. They've had a purge, they're now sliding the danger haired worked into place. One of their lot called women who want women's spaces cunts.
ffs speaks volumes.
NotAnActualSheep · 04/11/2020 09:04

It does not mean you, personally, are being addressed as a hater any more than Doris is when she gets a number 8 bus down Newington Road in Edinburgh.

Right. I'm feeling very judged now. How do you know my itinerary? It's an essential journey on public transport I'll have you know...

PostItJoyWeek · 04/11/2020 09:07

@Lis4Laughter

It's very 1084 isn't it.
I like this typo. It does feel like we are going back to the mediaeval times.
goldenharvest · 04/11/2020 09:12

Never seen an ad like this?

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 04/11/2020 09:13

I agree with all those saying the word "hater" makes anything else from the same source sound like the rantings of a cross, self absorbed 13 year old.

What next - dear poo poo breath? You are ruining my life? All the other kids have a PS5?

Sarahandco · 04/11/2020 09:16

Stupid question but are in Scotland?

heybabyitsawildworld · 04/11/2020 09:17

@ViciousJackdaw

Buttonit I'm really concerned that you believe the Scottish government are targeting you. You might not know this but when an advertising agency creates an ad, they are intended for the wider population, not just for one person who may or may not be looking. In this instance, the target audience is 'haters', hence the words 'Dear Haters'.

Are you a 'hater'? If you aren't then you can reasonably assume that you are not part of the intended target audience. Just as I would do if I saw an ad that read 'Dear Mothers' or 'Dear Arsenal supporters'.

Can I ask, are you having any other unusual thoughts at all? If you are then I strongly suggest you contact your GP in the morning - it must be really exhausting and worrying to have such thoughts playing on your mind and the doctors can help you banish them.

This is a really nasty and unnecessary post.

Background to how this ad campaign came about

www.gov.scot/publications/foi-19-02031/

It is designed to embolden those who are victims of hate crimes to come forward. It is not a new campaign (first run a year ago)

Gerbilsoup · 04/11/2020 09:24

Didn't this happen a couple of years ago? www.scotland.org/features/dear-haters-scotlands-bold-new-crusade-to-tackle-hate-crime

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 04/11/2020 09:28

Yes the new legislation from the Scottish government is terrifying

Any dissent - behind closed doors - will be a crime. No, this isn’t Russia, it is scotland under the SNP

AcornAutumn · 04/11/2020 09:30

First “ it’s hyper targeted, based on tonnes of factors; who you are, your behaviours on line but also off line, for example - where you’ve been whilst carrying your mobile (if you’ve been picked up in the vicinity of the location of a certain billboard for example, you mind find later that you’ll get served a digital ad on your mobile, or laptop...l

Wow, that’s scary. Is there a way to avoid that? I don’t have location services on.

OP, I’d be well pissed off if I got those ads. Baffling. Be interesting to know what MN say.

BertiesLanding · 04/11/2020 09:30

So people are happy that the Scottish government is promulgating a Stasi-like atmosphere?

We are definitely frogs in pots, and that water temperature is being turned way up.

I do love a bit of gaslighting in the morning.
RaspberryCoulis · 04/11/2020 09:33

Just stop listening to the Scottish government - those of us who live here did that months ago.

@letsghostdance

You sound paranoid and also have a complete lack of understanding of what the advert is actually trying to say.
I know exactly what that advert is trying to say. It's trying to say that women no longer exist as a sex class and that unless I bow down and repeat the mantras I am a 'hater'.

They've been around for a while those ads but they're getting airplay on my local radio now and I find them absolutely rage inducing.

I'm not blaming mumsnet, but those adverts are nothing to do with equalities and everything to do with using social media to stifle debate.

IwishNothingButTheBestForYou2 · 04/11/2020 09:38

I hate those ads.

Babdoc · 04/11/2020 09:39

This is the same SNP who have just appointed a biological male as Women’s Officer. A transgender biological male who ran a rape crisis centre, dealing with traumatised women who wanted a female only service, and who then boasted about trying to make it “fun” for them.
Any woman who still votes SNP needs her head examined.

cheeseismydownfall · 04/11/2020 09:39

I haven't seen it, but 'Dear Haters' is appalling language - aggressive, threatening, dismissive, divisive.

Which is ironic, really.

I'm getting the ads too. I'll screenshot the next time I see it.
gardenbird48 · 04/11/2020 09:41

The Scottish government are intent on passing laws that class pretty much everyone in Scotland equally as a hater (unless you are in the SNP inner circle so are ‘more equal than others’) so maybe this is just their general approach to communications and all public service announcements will start ‘Dear hater’ from now own.

I think it absolutely disgusting that a government sees fit to speak to their population like that - this is not about eradicating hate, it reflects the low opinion they have of the Scottish people.

TheCrowsHaveEyes · 04/11/2020 09:44

There are lots of problems with the ad and the campaign but it's not a MN issue. I've never seen that ad on here. It is on Twitter and it has been the subject of lots of debate.

If you follow equalities news then you'll be well aware of the ad and the campaign. So which is it? You follow these stories everywhere but somehow missed the controversy around the ad and the proposed hate bill?

Or you know about both of those and started a disingenuous thread with a clickbait title rather than being honest about wanting to discuss a current news story? Hmm

MorrisZapp · 04/11/2020 09:44

Lol absolutely. I look forward to their next shitey landfill newsletter through my door.

Dear hater, have you recanted yet? Oh and here's what we're doing about green bucket day...
