A group on facebook that I'm in.

Have never been accused of transphobia before and like to think I'm a tolerant and inclusive person. Quite socked and wondering if I am in the wrong here?

Clearly, I'm now close from being banned from the group. Just for context, it's a writing group.

@GinAtMerlottes

Obviously not transphobia and they are talking a massive load of crap. Mix of chromosomes? What mix of chromosomes means you can give birth other than X and X? People with sex chromosome variants are sterile, almost all of the time. Having said that I would absolutely not bother to engage, you’ve said your bit clearly and there is obviously nothing else you could say to this admin person which they would accept. Just move on from the conversation.

Actually on very rare occassions a person with XY chromosomes has a uterus and can give birth. There was definitely a case I read about (I think in India?) where the person had eggs implanted and gave birth to twins. I do believe she was considered female in spite of her chromosomes though, so it actually supports the OP's argument rather than the other person's...

@ButtWormHole

You’re asking on the biggest transphobic forum if you were transphobic? Wow.

Transphobic? Where?

The best thing is to not engage with these types. You can't have a discussion because they malfunction like an old Windows 64 PC and can't do anything apart from scream "TRANSPHOBIC", neglecting to explain their reasoning. Just back away slowly and leave them alone.

Same here OP. Apparently biologists agree with what the statement that boys can have periods too!

Oh so it's a man, mansplaining to a woman about who can gestate & give birth to a human baby.

Commiserations, @DelvingintoInsanity Flowers It's an awful awful feeling to be accused of hatred simply for stating biological fact.

But I think you'll have to set your mind to leaving this group. In my experience (and I've been formally complained about in my workplace - basically for being a feminist and centring women) there is no changing these bigots' minds.

They hate women.

There is some information doing the rounds that I’ve seen on Twitter and Facebook from a scientist explaining how sex is much much more complicated than male, female and intersex. And because it is so complicated we shouldn’t make any assumptions and everything is up for grabs. I’ll try to hunt it out. I’ve seen it used a fair few times to justify that sex shouldn’t be presumed and would like to see the opposite argument but have yet to.

YANBU. It's not transphobic to say only females can get pregnant, give birth, and breastfeed. It's also not inaccurate! It's just a fact.

As JK Rowling said, "It's not hate to speak the truth."

Context is important. The publishing world is deeply mired in this ideology. Are you unaware of the massive row over JK Rowling?

Fucking hell. How ridiculous

Just this, really. Don’t engage.

Definitely head to the feminism board. It’s an absolute education on this issue.

Is it a NaNoWriMo group by any chance?

I had to leave the ones I was involved with (including official ones) due to their response to the JKR furore earlier this year.

I'm not a healthcare professional or any sort of scientist, but I believe the key thing is whether a person has an SRY gene or not. Normally the SRY gene is on the Y chromosome but on rare occasions it ends up on the X chromosome. If it's there, during the very early weeks of pregnancy when the foetus makes a lot of testosterone and it washes all through the body, cells will respond it to and start developing in a male way. If it's not there, the cells won't respond to the testosterone and will develop in a female way.

This explains why very, very rarely someone with XY chromosomes develops as a female - faulty SRY gene. Also, also very rarely, once in a way an XX person has an SRY gene on one of the X chromosomes.

It's all so complex it's a miracle the human reproductive system ever works at all.

Here Wumben. A thread responding to the infamous “ScienceVet” thread. Please note, “ScienceVet” is a veteran and not a veterinary surgeon.

I think that trumps health care professional (whatever role) in being able to tell anyone what biological sex is. Wink

Why are they so intent with lumping people with DSD in with trans people? They are two very different things. It's like saying that oranges being different sizes means chin hairs can grow on snails.

There are plenty of us that don't subscribe to this stuff...but like me probably mostly keeping their heads down.

Because they believe it means there is no clear boundary between male and female. Because if there is no clear boundary, anyone can be anything. It’s all to do with queer theory, apparently. And no, it makes no sense to me either.

A lot of people think they are be daring.

I had a bit of a revelation when talking to a group of people from an organisation I belong to. They all considered themselves daring and progressive. But they were probably, within the context of their own social circles, about the most conservative sorts of people you could ever meet. And startlingly unimaginative. In their view though they stood for all kinds of new and challenging ideas.

Going away and "educating myself" after getting told to do so was what opened my eyes to gender critical feminism. I read nothing that explained why I was wrong/out of date/uneducated and plenty that showed that biology is really the only way to differentiate between men and women.
