to remind any Tory MPs on here that there is a reason people are having a go at you and it's not Angela Rayner's fault

MPs shouldn't be facing abuse on the streets.
Even if their actions are despicable and cause real harm to people
Even if their language, their tweets, their speeches in Parliament, media comments cause harm and belittle other groups.
They shouldn't face abuse.

But if you signed a letter because you think that being called 'scum' by Angela Rayner during the debate on Free School Meals resulted in abuse on the streets, then you seriously don't understand people.

There is a reason that people are calling Tory MPs scum because of their vote on FSM. And it's not Angela Rayner.

What do you think the reason is?

Tories are scum. It’s not Angela Rayner’s fault.

TheRealJeanLouise · 24/10/2020 09:30

Agreed. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck....

Killerofmen · 24/10/2020 09:31

Which Tory MPs do think use Mumsnet?

chomalungma · 24/10/2020 09:31

For context:
100 Tory MPs have signed a letter saying that being called scum in a debate by Angela Rayner has resulted in abuse of them on the streets.

Abuse is wrong. But to suggest that they wouldn't have got verbal abuse if Angela Rayner had said nothing is disingenuous.

@Killerofmen

Which Tory MPs do think use Mumsnet?
Who knows? I am sure some use it to get a feel for what people think in the country. And I am pretty certain some people with links to CCHQ use it.

Frazzled2207 · 24/10/2020 09:35

Angela Rayner probably should watch her language in the house but none of this is her fault.

I think that letter just makes things worse for the Tories. When you are in a hole, stop digging.

Are you trying to excuse Angela Rayner from the fact that she used unparliamentary language in the House of Commons? The Tories who signed that letter ... well I have plenty of words worse than scum.
The quality of MPs at the moment is very poor

midgebabe · 24/10/2020 09:45

Can we find out which MPs signed the letter?

I see you have as much perception as those Tory MPs do.

There is a reason that Tory MPs are being called scum and probably far worse.

And it's nothing to do with Angela Rayner,

Can we find out which MPs signed the letter?

"We’ve written to
@Keir_Starmer
after
@AngelaRayner’s comment resulted in widespread abuse towards our MPs, staff and families.

Will Sir Keir take action against Labour MPs and party members who perpetrate abuse, and apologise for Rayner’s record of unparliamentary behaviour?"

LilacCandle · 24/10/2020 09:49

Agree it's their actions and nothing to do with Angela Rayner. They are deluded if they think it's down to AR

Queenoftheashes · 24/10/2020 09:49

Tories have been renowned as scum long before this week

Iwantacookie · 24/10/2020 09:52

I dont see the issue all she did was point out the truth. Anyone who doesnt want children to be fed IS scum.

adawong · 24/10/2020 09:54

I am sure some use it to get a feel for what people think in the country.
If you think MN opinion is even remotely close to the real world you are seriously deluded.

blueangel19 · 24/10/2020 10:05

People on the street can be very low class in the way they express themselves. An MP should lead by example. ( All of them from any political party) They should debate in a civilised matter.

midgebabe · 24/10/2020 10:06

Gosh my mp is on that list

Funnily enough , I didn't know why Angela called anyone scum, but I had already looked up to see how my mp voted on the issue and was horrified/disgusted

There are a lot of derived areas in their remit. I suspect that has more to do with any abuse they have experienced

Noideawottodo · 24/10/2020 10:08

This!

I love mumsnet but it's wrong on almost everything all the time 😅

derxa · 24/10/2020 10:20

I see you have as much perception as those Tory MPs do. No I just happen to disagree with you. Do you think Angela Rayner was right to use unparliamentary language? She didn't do herself any favours.

Noideawottodo · 24/10/2020 10:25

And the reason it's almost always wrong is that there's a hive mind on every thread. If you disagree you basically get bullied.

If Mumsnet had an anonymous Like button for posts it would be very interesting.

midgebabe · 24/10/2020 10:37

People, disagreeing and saying so isn't bullying . People getting upset at your opinion isn't bullying

Refusing to engage because they disagree and deliberately blanking some people in the thread could be bullying, although it is also a way to handle bullies

Using abusive language about someone could be bullying

Following people from thread to thread could be bullying

Advise if you think you are being bullied is to report the post

midgebabe · 24/10/2020 10:39

Calling people scum is wrong, however blaming that , rather than their own actions, for their abuse is inaccurate, childish and bordering on bullying

Noideawottodo · 24/10/2020 10:40

Angela Rayner shouldn't have done it, whether you agree with her or not. I expect she'll be out anyway in KSs reshuffle.

chomalungma · 24/10/2020 10:44

@derxa Do you think that Angela Rayners comments are the only reason Tory MPs are being verbally abused at the moment?

OP posts:
SilverDragonfly1 · 24/10/2020 10:44

I think that once the house of commons is turned into a place of reasonable and respectful debate, that will be the time to address 'unparliamentary language'. If you're allowing MPs to make silly noises while others are speaking, you can't really complain about someone crossing the line in a very mild way.

And I agree that if the Tories didn't know that many of them are behaving like scum at the moment, they wouldn't be upset by the remark. If someone called me scum, I wouldn't be very upset, just confused and assume they had something else going on- because I know I'm not.
