to remind any Tory MPs on here that there is a reason people are having a go at you and it's not Angela Rayner's fault

MPs shouldn't be facing abuse on the streets.
Even if their actions are despicable and cause real harm to people
Even if their language, their tweets, their speeches in Parliament, media comments cause harm and belittle other groups.
They shouldn't face abuse.

But if you signed a letter because you think that being called 'scum' by Angela Rayner during the debate on Free School Meals resulted in abuse on the streets, then you seriously don't understand people.

There is a reason that people are calling Tory MPs scum because of their vote on FSM. And it's not Angela Rayner.

What do you think the reason is?

OP posts:
Noideawottodo · 24/10/2020 10:46

If someone called me scum, I wouldn't be very upset, just confused and assume they had something else going on- because I know I'm not

Oh fgs

chomalungma · 24/10/2020 10:47

Oh @derxa This is not about whether she was right or not to use such language. She should not have used it. But to suggest that her comments have resulted in verbal abuse of Tory MPs is disingenuous.

adawong
I am sure some use it to get a feel for what people think in the country.
If you think MN opinion is even remotely close to the real world you are seriously deluded.
This!

I love mumsnet but it's wrong on almost everything all the time 😅

ThisGrin Absolutely this.

derxa · 24/10/2020 10:55
@derxa Do you think that Angela Rayners comments are the only reason Tory MPs are being verbally abused at the moment?
No I don't. I think a lot MPs are of poor quality at the moment. Margaret Ferrier comes to mind. The Tory MPs writing that letter are pathetic.
Theresa May is looking positively statesmanlike at the moment compared to that shower.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 24/10/2020 10:56

And the reason it's almost always wrong is that there's a hive mind on every thread. If you disagree you basically get bullied.

Yes, and that’s why very often you have the votes in AIBU going the complete opposite direction to the ones the most vocal Posters are expressing.

nosswith · 24/10/2020 10:58

Do Tory MPs seriously think large numbers of people watch political items on the tv news? Shows them out of touch.

I agree with the Speaker's intervention and the comment being deemed unparliamentary though.

I would not call Tory MPs scum, as that it too kind. They are supporters of a mass killer, Mr Johnson.

ChazP · 24/10/2020 11:03

Day after day Johnson and his corrupt cronies stand in the H of C lying their vile heads off with no sanction whatsoever.
If Rayner can be criticised for anything, it’s that her choice of insult was too mild to describe the soulless profiteers that sit opposite her in the House.

KenDodd · 24/10/2020 11:07

I think Angela Rayners name called have absolutely nothing to do with the backlash Tory MPs are getting, and well they know it. They're just trying to deflect blame.

I heard this morning that Rishi Sunak been barred for life from a pub in his constituency (that he's probably never been to, but never mind).

KenDodd · 24/10/2020 11:11

And the public know what the Tories are like, we vote for them anyway. Nobody can pretend to be surprised that they would vote down extra fsm in a pandemic. We get what we vote for.

Noideawottodo · 24/10/2020 11:34

If it mattered that Cummings broke cv rules to drive to Barnard Castle, then it matters that Angela Rayner called a tory mp scum.

chomalungma · 24/10/2020 11:43

@Noideawottodo

Not saying that it matters.

But that's not the reason for the current comments being addressed at Tory MPs.

What do you think the reason is that Tory MPs are facing an increasing level of anger?

OP posts:
chomalungma · 24/10/2020 11:44

Trouble is, any tory MPs being expected to be believed about insults in the street simply won't wash. They follow Johnson and cannot be believed.

Bevan was right about tories.

Angela Rayner issued an apology, Cummings defended his actions.

lyralalala · 24/10/2020 11:59

I wonder if Tory HQ will apologise for Nicky Morgan saying that some of them would have supported the idea of feeding the kids at Christmas if labour MPs had been nicer to them?

Disappointedkoala · 24/10/2020 11:59

They all hate Rayner anyway because she's a loud, northern woman who clearly terrifies them. It's no surprise they're doing something like this. Maybe instead of writing pissy letters they should be having a long hard look at themselves.

sst1234 · 24/10/2020 12:16

To be fair, Angela Rayner does behave like a babymama on Jerry Springer, in Parliament and in tv debates.

What words would you use instead? In the House of Commons? Angela Rayner should lead by example. Can you imagine Barbara Castle going on like this? Or Harriet Harman.
chomalungma · 24/10/2020 12:30

All politicians - male and female - should lead by example.
As an avid H of C watcher, the behaviour and language (even if it not 'Unparliamentary') is appalling on all sides - and you can see how people can get angry.

However - as the OP is about - her comments have fuck all to do with the level of abuse being levelled at Tory MPs at the moment.

You're still excusing her. Shouting 'scum' detracts from your whole argument.

Why do you think that Tory MPs are getting a lot of abuse at the moment?

So what example are Tory MPs setting ? World beating hypocrisy ?

chomalungma · 24/10/2020 12:44

@derxa

Do you think that the reason Tory MPs are getting abuse is:

a) Because Angela Rayner called one scum in a debate in the H of C
b) Because many of them voted against children getting FSM vouchers which has been widely reported in MSM after a successful and popular campaign by Marcus Rashford?
