to remind any Tory MPs on here that there is a reason people are having a go at you and it's not Angela Rayner's fault

MPs shouldn't be facing abuse on the streets.
Even if their actions are despicable and cause real harm to people
Even if their language, their tweets, their speeches in Parliament, media comments cause harm and belittle other groups.
They shouldn't face abuse.

But if you signed a letter because you think that being called 'scum' by Angela Rayner during the debate on Free School Meals resulted in abuse on the streets, then you seriously don't understand people.

There is a reason that people are calling Tory MPs scum because of their vote on FSM. And it's not Angela Rayner.

What do you think the reason is?

Pyewhacket · 24/10/2020 15:54

Of course it's Angela Rayners fault, didn't be an idiot.

Pyewhacket · 24/10/2020 15:54

don't

KenDodd · 24/10/2020 15:57

If they truly believe that the criticism they are facing is because of Angela Rayners comment and not their despicable values then they are more out of touch then we think.

Nobody really thinks they're being criticised because of AR, it's just a Tory lie and distraction. Unfortunately though, I don't think they are out of touch in not caring about poor children.

sst1234 · 24/10/2020 16:00

Angela Rayner is like a bad sketch show. A satirical caricature of a working class woman. Claim to fame - teenage mum, communication style - shouty, foul mouthed angry woman, IQ - the size of amoeba.

It is not a true representation of working class women, and certainly nothing to aspire to or praise. And this is labour’s problem, they either have the metropolitan elite types or these over exaggerated sitcom working class characters type trying to fool the electorate that Labour are electable.

I think that a lot more people who never thought they would be involved in the benefits system, Universal Credit, etc and who might have looked down on people in the system are about to find out what it's like.

I was starting to regret voting Tory. Now after Angela Rayner I know why I won't be voting Labour any time soon. I don't think she's the type of person I'd want representing me. She doesn't do Labour or herself any favours.
I don't like AR language either but if I had to choose between an MP would voted against giving poor children food or am MP who'd called someone scum under her breath, well, I know which one I'd vote for.

slipperywhensparticus · 24/10/2020 16:04

She let her feelings show this proves one huge thing

She has feelings

raddledoldmisanthropist · 24/10/2020 16:09

Seriously? You think the, largely powerless, deputy leader being a bit of a plonker outweighs this governments record of idiocy?

Gavin Williamson was on the radio yesterday. He's come up with a system for classifying whether schools should shut. He's going to grade the severity of the local outbreak in tiers. His system has 4 tiers and is completely unconnected to BJ's 3 tier system. The names of the tiers are the same but not matching to the same numbers and the criteria are completely different. So a region in Johnson tier 3 (very high) might be on Williamson tier 1 (low).

I don't know why people keep saying the rules are confusing.

Crankley · 24/10/2020 16:25

That anyone imagines Tory MPs avidly read Mumsnet is hysterical. Everyone knows MN is a vehicle for left wing, woke, virtue signallers.

midgebabe · 24/10/2020 16:50

Anyone who believes that any political party avoids reading social media especially social media often associated with another parties politics is being naive

Although som at the top are probably too wrapped up in their own greatness to actually bother with any other opinion, the movers and shakers will be watching

The Tory party read the "most recommended" comments on the Times OL.

They do not care about Mumsnet.

I agree with her👏🏼👏🏼

ConquestEmpireHungerPlague · 24/10/2020 19:59

I think the government are despicable, particularly my own hateful MP, and I can think of a thousand reasons someone would abuse them in public or on social media, not that I would condone it. But I think Angela Rayner was totally out of order to shout abuse in the House and has foolishly reinforced all the negative stereotyping she attracts about being blunt, working class, northern, female and lacking in formal education that her presence in Parliament ought ideally to undermine. As a Labour party member I was embarrassed by her behaviour and I would like to think she is too. I know she has apologised, but as I understand it her apology was procedural rather than heartfelt, and imo she should consider her position as deputy leader if she really can't see how unacceptable it was.

Jente · 24/10/2020 20:12

Considering we have a PM who was elected despite blabbering on about picanninies and tank topped bum boys amongst a million other spasms of verbal diarrhoea, advised by a scumbag who even Cameron called a psychopath I would say more power to Angela Rayner.

AhFiddledeedee · 24/10/2020 20:19

Tory MPs are utterly deluded if they think AR's comment is the reason they are getting abuse in the street. It just shows how out of touch they are.

The govt have spaffed billions away on a T&T system that doesnt work, the MPs have voted to give themselves a 3k pay rise, continue to enjoy their subsidised meals and bar. While voting against giving a lifeline to the most vulnerable children.

But yeah, totally ARs fault people are angry with them.

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 24/10/2020 20:57

@MrsGrindah

But she has stupidly diverted the debate from the real issues so it’s a bit of an own goal.
No, she hasn't, they have deliberately tried to do so. Personally I don't get the problem with what she said. They are exactly that.
adawong · 24/10/2020 21:03

MPs have voted to give themselves a 3k pay rise
No they haven't why do people keep spouting this shit.

I feel exactly the same
Viviennemary · 24/10/2020 22:27

I think she should resign. Such a bad example to all. And thoroughly not suitable in any way to be any kind of leader deputy or otherwise. Agree that with people like that in high positions Labour has no chance whatsoever of winning an election. Imagine the outcry if a male Tory MP called a female Labour MP scum. There would be calls for resignation. And rightly so.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 24/10/2020 22:34

Boo fucking hoo. When female MPs asked the pm to moderate his language because they feared for their safety he was completely dismissive.

LakieLady · 24/10/2020 22:35

If Tory MPs don't want to be called scum, they can easily avoid it.

They just need to stop doing scummy things.

LakieLady · 24/10/2020 22:40

It was a pretty poor show.

They should get Dennis Skinner back to Westminster. He could run courses on creative insults. Some of his were bloody hilarious,

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 24/10/2020 22:41

I am sure some use it to get a feel for what people think in the country.
If you think MN opinion is even remotely close to the real world you are seriously deluded*

Grin yes we have had Remain winning easily Labour by a landslide on more than one occasion Boris about to resign on numerous occasions along with his political career on the brink of being over, Some On MN find it very hard to separate their wishes to reality when it comes to politics ...

And no Rayner isn’t to blame. She made herself look stupid she should be able to debate intelligently she is the dl of the opposition
