to remind any Tory MPs on here that there is a reason people are having a go at you and it's not Angela Rayner's fault

MPs shouldn't be facing abuse on the streets.
Even if their actions are despicable and cause real harm to people
Even if their language, their tweets, their speeches in Parliament, media comments cause harm and belittle other groups.
They shouldn't face abuse.

But if you signed a letter because you think that being called 'scum' by Angela Rayner during the debate on Free School Meals resulted in abuse on the streets, then you seriously don't understand people.

There is a reason that people are calling Tory MPs scum because of their vote on FSM. And it's not Angela Rayner.

What do you think the reason is?

Are you going to derail this thread with cut and paste?

There is a reason that Tory MPs are facing hostility at the moment.

Clavinova always tries to derail threads with cut 'n' paste. She will now tell us that she has to go out.

Clavinova · 24/10/2020 14:18

Are you going to derail this thread with cut and paste?

No need - I think contrmary's last post is an excellent summary of the situation.

Peregrina · 24/10/2020 14:20

However in certain quarters eruptions from Tory MPs and boorish behaviour, animal noises etc. is just fine and dandy.

derxa · 24/10/2020 14:21

There is a reason that Tory MPs are facing hostility at the moment. Then why didn't you start with that premise then? This Angela Rayner business is a storm in a teacup- both her shouting scum and the letter. MPs behaving like school children when the country is in crisis. We need clever serious minded people in parliament and there seems to be a great dearth of them.

fiftiesmum · 24/10/2020 14:24

I was shocked at the way AR was told off like a naughty schoolgirl by that dreadful woman Eleanor Laing (another Tory who seems to do very little and gets out of any commitment because of her position)

noseresearch · 24/10/2020 14:25

Tories are so embarrassing and out of touch with reality.
Also, I don’t really remember them speaking up in solidarity for Diane Abbott (it’s been showed she overwhelmingly receives the most online abuse for a female MP - not to mention most of them are personal attacks e.g., her appearance rather than being attacked for how she has voted)

chomalungma · 24/10/2020 14:27

Then why didn't you start with that premise then

Have you even read the OP?

I made exactly the same point about Diane Abbott on another thread.
I am reminded of Corporal Jones - these Tories don't like it up 'em, do they?

They are now busy trying to delete tweets, pretend their comments were taken out of context, blah de blah, not realising how much they have misjudged the public mood.

Rosehip345 · 24/10/2020 14:33

She should conduct herself better, but that’s not why they’re being verbally abused.

It’s a bit like during the election campaign and all over social media was constant abuse of tories and lots of people claiming how terrible they are and how uncaring you are if you vote conservative, they still got a majority though as the more left wing voters are more verbally abusive, but there simply weren’t as many.

I personally would have voted the same way if I’d been an MP, and I’m happy to defend that.

Notonthestairs · 24/10/2020 14:36

Rosehip - nothing to do with voting against extending FSM's during a pandemic and looming recession?

Clavinova · 24/10/2020 14:39

Is that why Jess Phillips appears to have deleted her tweet?

"Jess Phillips MP (Labour) retweeted @BBradleyMans :
RT @ B Bradley_Mans: Some do... dont think that's controversial to say, tbh. Some parents are not good parents and prioritise other things ahead of their kids. Small minority, yes... but some do. Step out of the PC bubble and come live in the real world. twitter.com/jlongstaff
/st…"

Rosehip345 · 24/10/2020 14:40

@Notonthestairs ???Well obviously??

Lady1576 · 24/10/2020 14:44

Yes. Spot on. I couldn’t have said better myself. The reason people hate this government is not because of Angela Rayner. They act despicably with no conscience and then are surprised that they are not liked. They have been able to get away with wasting money through ineptitude and corruption and then refuse to use money to help the poor. If they think that behaviour is acceptable then people will think they are vile scum. If they don’t like that behaviour they should speak up or leave their party.

DuncinToffee · 24/10/2020 15:01

So Jess Phillips deleted a retweet rather than her own 'misunderstood' tweet?

PhilSwagielka · 24/10/2020 15:06

My heart bleeds. Jo Cox is fucking dead and Diane Abbott gets sacks of racist hate mail every day.

Always the victims.

sst1234 · 24/10/2020 15:22

The virtue signalling can continue, if it makes people feel better. It amounts to absolutely nothing. Brexit happened because the voting majority wanted it, Tories won GE in 2019 and labour got smashed (remember Rayner was in the shadow cabinet then too), because the voting majority wanted it. Tory MPs are voting in line with the mandate given to them. Next GE will come and go and Tories will still win. Not in spite of their voting record but because of the pathetic shadow cabinet of which Rayner is a poster girl. She has about as much credibility as Corbyn did. Now where’s that next virtue signalling protest thread.

Clavinova · 24/10/2020 15:24

Tories are so embarrassing and out of touch with reality.

Why did Labour (and the LibDems) suffer such embarrassing defeats in the general election?

chomalungma · 24/10/2020 15:25

Tory MPs are clearly signalling what they stand for.

What's the opposite of virtue signalling?

Errrr, making yourself electable.
chomalungma · 24/10/2020 15:35

Errrr, making yourself electable

Or showing that they clearly don't give a shit about people less well off.

Maybe those aren't mutually exclusive actions though.

@Clavinova
Actually I agree with you.
I will never repeat the many, many, disgusting, racist, homophobic, misogynist, islamophobic things Boris Johnson has said and written over the years. It's important to know what he thinks though and what he thinks of us. The many things he's said and done have helped shape my opinion of him. I know you love him despite (or maybe because) of his racism/homophobia/misogyny/islamophobia views.

Clavinova · 24/10/2020 15:43

Somewhat ironic;

"Blair backs [Harriet] Harman over cut in lone-parent benefit."

"Mr Blair's personal backing for the Secretary of State for Social Security underlines his determination not to allow her to be picked off by the left wing who are beginning to flex their muscles for the first time on the issue after a stormy confrontation at the weekly Parliamentary Labour Party meeting."

"[Diane] Abbott said a wide spectrum of Labour MPs were against the cut, and 46 Labour MPs have signed a Commons motion led by Audrey Wise, a veteran left-winger, and some members of the new intake including Ann Cryer and John McDonnell."

"A group of women protesters shouted "Labour scum" when it was approved."

KenDodd · 24/10/2020 15:49

Imagine a doctor or nurse refusing to treat someone "because they were rude".

A better analogy would be the doctor refused to treat the patient because somebody else was rude to them.

And labour weren't even rude, they just introduced the bill in a manner that displeased the Tories. It's not even the real reason Tories voted it down, they voted it down because they wanted to.

Viviennemary · 24/10/2020 15:51

I was starting to regret voting Tory. Now after Angela Rayner I know why I won't be voting Labour any time soon. I don't think she's the type of person I'd want representing me. She doesn't do Labour or herself any favours.
