Teacher gave Nephew a bag of kale. AIBU to think this is strange?

Was speaking to my nephew last night, and he proudly showed me a bag of kale his teacher had given him...

He’s at secondary school; and apparently it was a prize for winning the tutor competition. He picked a prize out of a hat and ended up with the gag prize.

Honestly not making this up. AIBU to think this is a bit weird?

It was a gag prize. His teacher sounds funny and trying to inspire her students

Firsttimemumofone · 23/10/2020 09:16

I do not understand what you would be reporting? It sounds like it was a joke kind of thing in the classroom, one that your nephew clearly found funny.
What is the issue?

Ignoringequally · 23/10/2020 09:17

It was a ‘gag’ prize. It’s supposed to be odd.

Florencex · 23/10/2020 09:17

Yes YABU to think it is strange. I don’t know why you are even giving it any thought.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 23/10/2020 09:18

FelicityPike · 23/10/2020 09:18

Well You said it was the Gag prize....
Teach him how to make crisps? A pot of soup? Donate to a food bank?
What’s the issue?

CyanSnake · 23/10/2020 09:18

I’m not reporting anything, I just wondered if anyone else had had this at school, or a child who had. It just seemed a bit strange to me? That’s all.

It was a joke, lighten up

Peanutbutteryogurt · 23/10/2020 09:18

You've clearly explained what the context was around it so why is it weird?

Ignoringequally · 23/10/2020 09:18

You wanted to know if anyone else has specifically been given a bag of kale as a gag prize?

OldEvilOwl · 23/10/2020 09:20

It was a joke!

elliejjtiny · 23/10/2020 09:22

Wasn't there a tv programme years ago where the prizes were like that. You migth get something really good or you might get a cabbage.

CyanSnake · 23/10/2020 09:22

I guess I just can’t imagine a professional educator dishing out kale... it just seems surreal to me!

Shoppingwithmother · 23/10/2020 09:22

To be honest, you are the one who sounds a bit weird. Have you literally never heard of anything like this before? Like a lucky dip with some booby prizes?

JorisBonson · 23/10/2020 09:22

Bloody hell, bet you're a laugh a minute 🙄

Shoppingwithmother · 23/10/2020 09:24

Yes, @elliejjtiny - Crackerjack! It’s like “Double or Drop”

spanieleyes · 23/10/2020 09:24

Now, if they had dished out a bag of weed I could understand your confusion!
Round here the gag prize is usually a stalk of Brussels sprouts!

keeprocking · 23/10/2020 09:25

Teacher sounds brilliant!

Boom45 · 23/10/2020 09:28

By kale you mean the leafy vegetable right? That's a pretty standard gag prize - like cabbages on crackerjack or whatever. Unless your talking about something else I'm not sure what the confusion is. Your nephew proudly showed it to you so he was obviously quite entertained by it.

Floralnomad · 23/10/2020 09:29

@CyanSnake do you not understand what the word gag prize means in the context of a competition .

beepbeepsheep · 23/10/2020 09:30

Quite frankly that teacher should lose their job. Do everything in your power to make that happen OP. Go right to the top. Highly unprofessional behaviour. Promoting fun and healthy eating in one go. I am disgusted and appalled.

Acerred · 23/10/2020 09:30

Grin sounds like a fun teacher.

PolarBearStrength · 23/10/2020 09:30

That teacher sounds like a good laugh!

Fajitanita · 23/10/2020 09:31

Haha I think the teacher sounds fab. If he 'proudly' showed it then it seems like it hasn't done any lasting damage, has it.
