Was speaking to my nephew last night, and he proudly showed me a bag of kale his teacher had given him...

He’s at secondary school; and apparently it was a prize for winning the tutor competition. He picked a prize out of a hat and ended up with the gag prize.

Honestly not making this up. AIBU to think this is a bit weird?

@CyanSnake

I guess I just can’t imagine a professional educator dishing out kale... it just seems surreal to me!
That's what is so brilliant about it. I like a teacher with a touch of the absurd about them Grin

I love kale, I would have been delighted. I was at a farmer's market pickup the other day and someone had ordered too much kale so I got a huge bag of it for free, we have been havihg a great time with it...

Great idea for a gag prize. I know my teenage son would find it funny if he won it.

Zilla1 · 23/10/2020 09:53

Feed someone a meal containing kale and they'll not be hungry for a day. Give them a bag of kale and their DM will post on MN.

I love kale, loved it before it was trendy too.

YABU. I think you're. Bit odd to not get how it was a gag prize.........now you need to introduce him to the joy of kale 😂😂😂

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 23/10/2020 09:54

I'm confused. Are you not familiar with the concept of a gag prize or do you just find it weird that kale was the gag prize here? What would you consider a normal gag prize?

peachypetite · 23/10/2020 09:54

You are way over thinking this!

romeolovedjulliet · 23/10/2020 09:55

professional educator ? surely teacher is quicker to say / write or am i out of touch now since my last dc left education 2 years ago ?

crochetmonkey74 · 23/10/2020 09:55

IT.IS.A.JOKE. by a teacher who despite everything has had the energy to do something fun- nephew obviously in on joke as sharing with others.
It is not the 'professional educator' who has the problem it is you.
p.s you know how we educate don't you? by taking the kids with us collaboratively through shared jokes, stories, rapport

Surreal is the whole point.

I find it funny, but I appreciate the quirkiness of it.

SqidgeBum · 23/10/2020 09:59

You think because they are 'educational professionals' they cant make a joke? They work with teenagers all day. You have to have a sense of humour. It's a gag prize. My DH used to do similar when he taught maths; competitions where the winner got the worst prize like chocolate wrappers from his bag or pencil shavings. The kids would joke and swap their rubbish prizes so they had the worst one.

Its called making an effort as a teacher to lighten things up.

Asterion · 23/10/2020 10:00

That teacher sounds fab! Grin

BlueCatRedCat · 23/10/2020 10:00

So yesterday, some idiot parent was threatening to report a teacher who had comforted her distressed son with a hug, which the son was grateful for. And today we have this person complaining about a gag prize, that her nephew was grateful to/tickled to receive. FFS, no wonder teachers leave the profession in droves if this is the sort of parent they have to deal with.

SweatyBetty20 · 23/10/2020 10:02

I once won a British Rail sandwich as part of a pass the parcel when I was a kid in the 70s - anything ca be a gag prize!

savethewales · 23/10/2020 10:03

I'm training to be a teacher; posts like this honestly make me not want to bother.

FraughtwithGin · 23/10/2020 10:04

Kale is excellent stuff (and much better than chocolate or other sweets under the circumstances).
As well as using it as a vegetable, you can crisp it up in the oven (toss in a teaspoon of olive oil and some salt first) for about 10 to 12 minutes and get delicious, crunchy kale crisps.

NeonGenesis · 23/10/2020 10:04

Sounds like a reasonable gag prize to me

MB90 · 23/10/2020 10:04

Oh OP, lighten up!

spanieleyes · 23/10/2020 10:06

Oh, some parents can really liven your day. We had one yesterday who asked if we could tell their child off because they hadn't tidied their bedroom. The parent suggested perhaps the child could stay in at lunchtime!

Sodamncold · 23/10/2020 10:06

You sound a bit weird op if I’m honest

Teacher sounds brilliant

BabbleBee · 23/10/2020 10:07

My daughter came home with a cucumber yesterday.... for being as cool as a cucumber! She was delighted, as was I!

thegcatsmother · 23/10/2020 10:07

I taught one lad who was permanently angry about things, but we got on well. His passion was fishing, so I'd always ask how it went. He came to my classroom one day and gave me a trout he'd caught and gutted the previous evening. It was delicious.

My dd English Language teacher pretended to have a heart attack last week, (he does am dram) clutched his chest, dramatically fell against desks sending papers across the floor and laid on the floor motionless because they all got something correct. Grin they all love that teacher and work so hard for him, he also drops the odd swear word (A-Levels) shock horror! He always gets the best results out of the class.

SymphonyofShadows · 23/10/2020 10:08

OP is clearly one of the PO

flaviaritt · 23/10/2020 10:09

It’s kale not crack.
