Teacher gave Nephew a bag of kale. AIBU to think this is strange?

Was speaking to my nephew last night, and he proudly showed me a bag of kale his teacher had given him...

He’s at secondary school; and apparently it was a prize for winning the tutor competition. He picked a prize out of a hat and ended up with the gag prize.

Honestly not making this up. AIBU to think this is a bit weird?

@ViciousJackdaw

Romaine calm cos you've learnt a chard lesson today about the teacher's sense of humour but if you've never met herbivore, you might not have known what she was like. I'd leaf it for now but if she gives out any more interesting prizes, do lettuce know.

@CyanSnake

I guess I just can’t imagine a professional educator dishing out kale... it just seems surreal to me!
Professionals still have sense of humour (unlike family members it seems)

One of my students won a jar of pickled onions last week. Fortunately I still have my job.

AibuTellMe · 23/10/2020 16:46

Hate kale but I buy it for my pet so would have been happy to get a bag for free 😂 not as a teen though. YANBU OP

I think the teacher probably got a huge bag of kale in her Abel and Cole veg box that morning and inwardly groaned - it has happened to the best of us- then had a lightbulb moment.

Absolutely.
Engages and motivates the kids, confuses the Aunties and ticks the Healthy Eating box.

First prize (pre-Covid) here was to tidy the teacher's desk.

Clareflairmare · 23/10/2020 18:00

Almost certainly just a joke - not sure why it's a big deal.

Otot · 24/10/2020 18:38

gag prize~~~as the name already tells.

LOL~~~

I think gag prizes are ok but the number of teachers on this thread painting the teacher as a genius for this is bizarre. At my school us students would have raised a bemused eyebrow at most at this.

Disappointedkoala · 24/10/2020 19:30

I'd be made up, I love Kale.

Baxterbear · 24/10/2020 20:04

Karen YABVVU.....!

Ddot · 24/10/2020 21:53

Cook it, its yummy.

Doneanddone · 24/10/2020 21:55

What the heck? A gag prize?

The kid put in effort and hard work and all he got was kale?

It think to even have a gag prize is a but cruel.

Funguy · 24/10/2020 22:29

oh dear... it was a joke prize. Is that weird? No. It's a joke prize.

RaininSummer · 24/10/2020 22:45

That's really funny. Imagine the face of the child who wins a big bag of kale. I would have been chuffed if my kid brought that home

Irisheyesrsmiling · 24/10/2020 22:50

Sounds like a brilliant teacher. I'd be sending a note of appreciation for creativity, humour and encouraging healthy eating! :)

FunTimes2020 · 24/10/2020 23:01

@Firsttimemumofone

I do not understand what you would be reporting? It sounds like it was a joke kind of thing in the classroom, one that your nephew clearly found funny. What is the issue?
Op said nothing about reporting. You need to read properly...

The Leon kale and peanut salad is gorgeous.

My kids would love a bag of kale. I think they might be the weird ones 😂

Happycat74 · 25/10/2020 11:45

I don’t see the problem, it was a gag prize, it’s meant to be funny!

Meatshake · 25/10/2020 13:01

It's a safe-charding issue.

It's a garden-gateway vegetable. Today it's kale, tomorrow he'll be onto the hard stuff snorting sprouts and injecting beetroot juice.

Why isn't anyone thinking of the children?

Lovely13 · 26/10/2020 00:02

Unfunny for me. Would make me feel hellish if I’d been that student. Teacher is a Victorian style bully. Hilaars. Let’s pick on someone!

wtf

EmmaGrundyForPM · 26/10/2020 07:49

Really?

Presumably the teacher knows the pupils well and knows who potentially might not be able to handle a joke like this.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 26/10/2020 07:50

Sorry, that was meant for @Lovely13
