Teacher gave Nephew a bag of kale. AIBU to think this is strange?

Was speaking to my nephew last night, and he proudly showed me a bag of kale his teacher had given him...

He’s at secondary school; and apparently it was a prize for winning the tutor competition. He picked a prize out of a hat and ended up with the gag prize.

Honestly not making this up. AIBU to think this is a bit weird?

It’s meant to be weird. That’s the whole point of a gag prize. Hmm

@FAQs

This thread has been worth it purely for that recipe. I am going to buy a bag of kale today. Do you think it would work with chard?

FrancesFlute · 23/10/2020 09:31

Why are you even giving thought to this? It doesn't affect you. It's a gag prize which means it's a rubbish joke prize. My friend once gave me a lump of coal for my birthday as a joke and it was funny.

SarahBellam · 23/10/2020 09:31

Haha! That’s brilliant. The class must have been in stitches. He should make into kale chips, they’re far better than you’d expect.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 23/10/2020 09:34

I'm going to try that receipe Grin.

movingonup20 · 23/10/2020 09:35

Sounds brilliant, I actually love kale too. Dd had a teacher that gave them prizes of root vegetables once

FAQs · 23/10/2020 09:35

🤣 @Radiatornoise maybe! Prob have to cook linger to get it crispy.

Whatthebloodyell · 23/10/2020 09:35

I imagine the teacher went to buy a cabbage, and could only get a bag of Kale. Would a cabbage seem less odd to you OP? Or is it the idea of any joke at all that is confusing you?

FAQs · 23/10/2020 09:36

Linger ha, longer!

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 23/10/2020 09:36

Newsflash. Teacher with a sense of humour. Parent baffled.

SleepingStandingUp · 23/10/2020 09:38

@CyanSnake

I guess I just can’t imagine a professional educator dishing out kale... it just seems surreal to me!
Why are you so anti kale? He gave the kids a bag of veg, not crack
Judashascomeintosomemoney · 23/10/2020 09:42

CRACKERJACK!!!!
Cabbages and Kings! Three cabbages and you were out. Be careful OP, three bags of green leafy veg and it’ll be a permanent exclusion.

Serin · 23/10/2020 09:43

To be fair it's better for him than chocolate Grin

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 23/10/2020 09:43

Was it kale or cannabis 😂

ladybee28 · 23/10/2020 09:43

@CyanSnake

I’m not reporting anything, I just wondered if anyone else had had this at school, or a child who had. It just seemed a bit strange to me? That’s all.
You wondered if anyone had specifically had their teacher give them a bag of kale?

It is probably a fairly niche experience, to be fair.

blackteaplease · 23/10/2020 09:46

It was clearly a joke. What in your opinion should a professional educator be doing during tutor time? Are they not allowed to lighten the mood and have a rapport with their tutees?

Ignoringequally · 23/10/2020 09:46

You mean a professional educator having a joke with his students?

Yes you’re right. Despicable.

MusicWithRocksIn1t · 23/10/2020 09:46

😆 I think this is great

stackemhigh · 23/10/2020 09:47

I would have been fucked off at getting a bag of kale for winning a tutor competition, so your nephew is sweet for being proud.

Just as long as she doesn't play favourites then it's fine.

dolphinpose · 23/10/2020 09:47

He was proud of it. That is cute. Teach him to make kale crisps or soup and tell him it is brilliant for his health and brain power.

twobrews · 23/10/2020 09:47

@CyanSnake
Are you OK hun?

Tashtegotoo · 23/10/2020 09:47

Our school bus driver gave me two bags of kale yesterday. Now I'm regretting not dong some kind of competition with them today.

I had a kid bring in a shark foetus once for Show and Tell so no one round here would bat an eyelid.

Elsa8 · 23/10/2020 09:47

My tutor group would love this sort of thing, sounds like your nephew took it in the spirit intended! I think you should complain though, purely because teaching is challenging at the moment and I suspect they could all use a good laugh Grin

Greenandcabbagelooking · 23/10/2020 09:48

And here was me giving sweets, pens and notebooks for prizes.

I’ll add some kale to the shopping list!

Goatinthegarden · 23/10/2020 09:49

If you build positive relationships with your pupils, they tend to learn better. They also tend to behave better if they like and respect you. Teaching is a performance, professional educators have to be entertaining and interesting and enthusiastic if they want to keep every child engaged in a lesson.

Going home with a bag of kale is the sort of thing that absolutely appeals to the average 14 year old sense of humour. Clearly your nephew was entertained.
