Annoyed that its mostly people in safe jobs that are calling for full lockdown

Both mine and my husbands jobs are at severely at risk as we both work in hospitality. I am very swiftly losing patience with people in cushy jobs, where they can easily work from home and where there is little risk of redundancy calling for another full lockdown. Feel like we are being thrown to the wolves! Anyone in the same boat want to vent!

My job is as close to safe as any in the country, but I do feel for you and I do not want another lockdown!

Happyspud · 14/10/2020 22:37

I'm sorry. You're in a horrible situation. It's very hard to see and take into consideration everyone's situation. No matter what way this is done people are being harmed so I guess people are picking a side to sit on based on their own situation.

TheDuchessofMalfy · 14/10/2020 22:39

I’ve got one of those cushy jobs but I agree with you. I don’t want hospitality or any other industries to go under, with the loss of jobs and loss to the economy that will bring.

peasoup8 · 14/10/2020 22:40

Couldn’t agree more OP.

tappitytaptap · 14/10/2020 22:40

I work from home at the moment (not particularly cushy, I’ve only just shut my laptop 😂) but totally agree with you. Definitely don’t want another full lockdown as I can see what it is doing to other people’s jobs through no fault of their own.

TheDuchessofMalfy · 14/10/2020 22:41

But I also don’t think you should judge what is going to happen or what public opinion is from what you read on MN because it can skew one way or the other from one day to the next.

FelicityBeedle · 14/10/2020 22:42

I think it’s those like me who work in hospitals calling for a circuit break lockdown, hardly doing it because we like sitting at home with no commute

formerbabe · 14/10/2020 22:44

Yanbu

It's absolutely shocking that some people can't see how this will affect others.

edwinbear · 14/10/2020 22:45

YANBU OP. I am WFH and not under immediate threat of redundancy but the damage already done to our economy is irreparable. Currently, taxes will need to go up by £125pm, per family to cover it, I dread to think what that figure will have to go up to.

mirandatempestuous · 14/10/2020 22:46

Yep. Totally agree. The problem
though is with the government who had 7 months to sort a decent test track and trace system and totally failed -
Leaving us in the truly terrible position we are in now. I do think they should do local lock downs only though.

Windyone · 14/10/2020 22:47

I don’t know anyone calling for a full lockdown. Surely most people are against that?

pinkstripeycat · 14/10/2020 22:48

I’m self employed so if we lockdown again I’m screwed. My DCs are at a critical time in their education and more time off school would be really bad for them. A close family member Who doesn’t work and their DP works from home would not be affected financially. This family member is desperate for a lockdown so they can have their young DC at home and have some lovely family time

Don't you want to save your job?

Temporary close. Covid contained. Open back up.

Had we taken proper containment measures in February or March, everything (bar flights) would be back to normal by now. We continue as we are, things will only only get worse and worse.

Short-term pain, long-term gain.

When you speak of secure jobs, I assume you mean HCP? I know the BMA is calling for containment action, but I wouldn't exactly describe doctors as having secure jobs. Not with the increased risk of death, Long Covid, and PTSD.

HCP aside, no it's the other way round. The world's billionaires - the people in secure jobs - don't especially seem to be particularly in favour of proactive containment measures. As the recent report shows, they've done rather nicely (financially) so far.

Laufeythejust · 14/10/2020 22:52

My job is safe touch wood but I most definitely don’t want another lockdown.

MorrisZapp · 14/10/2020 22:52

There's a selfish side to this too. I have a relatively safe job and I have loads of reasons for opposing another lockdown. One reason is that I'm already depressed and heartbroken about much loved shops and pubs that have gone out of business already. It's changing the city I live in and making it feel unloved and hollow. I don't want to live like this. People need jobs first and foremost, but my god they need convivial spaces to gather in too. I really hope you manage to keep your job, and continue to enjoy your own local spots too.

Iheardarumour · 14/10/2020 22:53

I work in transport. Near safe employment. I don't want another lockdown. I was bored stupid during the last one, and I hate hearing of people living their jobs.

nevernotstruggling · 14/10/2020 22:54

No way. My job is very safe and I can't cope with another lockdown. I can't cope with the schools closing. I am very worried about people's jobs and lives. Even though I am unaffected in real terms.

SheepandCow · 14/10/2020 22:54

They could do that anyhow Confused If they're not working and desperate to have their child at home, they're legally allowed to home school. That's always been an option, long before the pandemic.

What will you do if your dc's school has to close when the staff are ill? On off on off. Wouldn't you prefer to contain Covid?

Iheardarumour · 14/10/2020 22:54

Living is supposed to be losing

quarentini · 14/10/2020 22:55

I'm in the same position as you op.
I do not want another lockdown.
How anyone thinks people can bounce back from 66 percent bay and possibly redundant at the end of it all is beyond me.
The government has been completely incompetent throughout and as a sector, us and the arts are being thrown to the wolves

puffinsseagulls · 14/10/2020 22:56

Nobody wants a lockdown OP but the virus has got out of control again. We're where we were earlier in the year.
If we lock down ASAP for a couple of weeks and the government gets it (the tracing) under control, we will be better off than just more faffing about, the virus gets more and more out of control, and then we end up with a stupidly long lockdown like the one we already had. So I'd rather do 2 weeks now than more later.

SheepandCow · 14/10/2020 22:56

Do you feel for all the transport workers and their families including young children who died during the first wave?

Are you not concerned about your job security if we fail to contain Covid? How secure is your job if we drag this out for another year, with more people WFH and therefore reduced travel?

VillageGreenTree · 14/10/2020 23:00

I am loosing patience with people with low risk factors for COVID saying we should just let it rip through the population and take the hit of many many more thousands of deaths and an overwhelmed NHS.
Finances can be recovered. You can't recover from death.

yarrowsparrow · 14/10/2020 23:01

I don’t have any faith that the govt will magically sort out the test and trace system during a two week lockdown. They’ve had months already.

SheepandCow · 14/10/2020 23:02

I agree that we shouldn't do another pointless half lockdown. Lockdown is a hardship - and therefore has to be worthwhile. We do it once and we do it properly. We do it properly so that when we ease out of it, we can open up the economy. No more dragged out on off on off, which absolutely is damaging the economy and risking jobs.

We need to lockdown temporarily - but just the once.

Restricted borders (to continue after lockdown ends) is the key. That, and a fully functioning test, track, and trace system.

Our previous 'lockdown'? Yes I can understand why people don't want a repeat of that. Jobs at risk for nothing sustainable long-term.
